Tallabred, are you serious?
Come on, please. It was part of The Onion spoof that came out regarding Nike and Big Brown several weeks ago.
In reality IEAH actually said no to a possible NYC parade if he won the Belmont, due to the risks involved.
Speaking of which where was the fearless CEO of IEAH, Michael Iavarone, today? I didn’t see his overly tanned, shade wearing and almost always glued-to-Big-Brown’s-side big grin today. All I did see was the rather shady looking dude (along with the exercise rider) rudely shooing ABC cameras from BB during the walk from the detention barn to the saddling area.
pulling up
what was amazing to me was how he finished the race, not that he lost. The Bid with a pin stuck in his hoof and Smarty Jones and Funny Cide and all the others trying for the crown all ran out the race, while BB did not fire when asked to run, and was pulled up and cantered in. and the vet says nothing wrong, no lameness, nothing. while I understand acts to save or try to save a horse when he/she is injured, as Barbaro’s jockey tried to hold his shattered leg, I don’t understand stopping just cause you know you cannot win. something else is going on here, that we don’t know about.
but enough speculation. glad all survived the race, glad Zito won, hope that out there there’s a TB (maybe a filly, yeah!) who can win the crown next year.
and keep the races as they are, a good horse can run in all 3 of the races if he/she is in good condition.
another off the important stuff question,
They always have the same blonde woman on the horse doing interviews and this time it was a different woman - anybody notice that in the beginning?
It makes you wonder how bad broadcast journalism schools are today!
Example - a rather irksome headline from the Associated Press which will be used (sadly) by many other media outlets: Quote “Da’ Tara spoils Big Brown’s bid for Triple Crown”
Da’Tara didn’t spoil anything.
By comparison - and used in the correct sense - Birdstone spoiled Smarty Jones’ bid by defeating him near the wire.
In 2008, Big Brown wasn’t a contender at the finish against anyone so you could just as well as used a dumb headline as “Guadalcanal spoils Big Brown’s bid” as that horse too finished ahead of BB.
The headline as presented now suggests that Big Brown was close but just had his day spoiled by X horse. It never was the case whatsoever.
great new word
Ratchet back the offend-o-meter. It was just hyperbole. I took DMK to mean that, even though the horse wasn’t noticeably suffering, steroid withdrawal may have kept him from being his best. A colorful analogy that helped to get the point across. That’s all.
great new word. and phrase. I like “ratchet back the offend-o-meter”
don’t know why some folks take everything personally.
meanwhile, the offended person should send some $$ to the aid for Darfur instead of complaining here.

Did you notice that Derby and Preakness are on NBC and Belmont is on ABC? The two networks have entirely different staffs and on-air talent.
Donna Brothers (ex jockey herself and married to Frank Brother a noted trainer) does interviews and observation via horseback for NBC. For the Belmont, ABC/ESPN brought in their own reporter to fill that role.
My heart goes out to a great jockey, Kent Desormeaux.
Other than that, hearty congratulations on a great race to Da’ Tarra’s connections. Wire to wire!
Oh, and that Denis of Cork punched his ticket today. Third in the Derby, second in the Belmont… What’s next? Will he follow in the footsteps of Mr. Warren’s other great gorse, Saint Liam? I hope he continues to run into his fourth year!
The jockey didn’t say he pulled him up because he couldn’t win. He said he felt that since the horse did not respond when asked, as he always has before, that he felt something was wrong. If I remember correctly he said " I needed to take care of my horse." Continuing to push a horse full speed that does not feel 100% is in no way good for the horse. It seems like the difference was obvious to everyone. BB is known to stalk and then go for it around the last turn. He was set up to be able to do just that. When KD started asking him, first with his arms, and then gave him the “signal” to go (the one hit with the crop) there was no response. Even if he was told to pull him up if it wasn’t working, I appreciate the fact that he put the horse first, over any competitive drive. KD knows that horse, and what is normal for him well. Just because nothing was broken, and he is not lame, does not mean something is not wrong.
I am choosing to believe what I heard come out of the jockey’s mouth, as well as what I saw with my own eyes, over some possible conspiracy theory.
Glimmerglass, I missed that on The Onion, but couldn’t believe anyone would do such a thing. Yet . . . I felt much the same about the Hooters deal.
Thanks for the correction.
Lets try out this theory…
Lets say it is steroid withdrawl? Since Dutrow decided to prove a point, Iwonder if he’d okay’d it with the owners…if not, I wonder what they’re thinking tonight…Bad time to try and prove a point…and steroids are still legal in NY…what was Dutrow thinking?
And lets get real here… Most (not all) trainers use Winstrol, Testosterone…it’s called taking an edge, or keeping up w/ the Jones’s…so I’m sure he was not the only horse in the Derby or Preakness with those drugs in his system. He may however, have been the only horse in the Belmont without them… just a thought.
Well, I thought it was a great race. And even though I laughed at the fact Zito/LaPenta even entered Da’Tara, I am still happy for them. Nice people and it was nice to see them win a TC race after missing out with War Pass.
I wonder if Tagg will be more curmudgeonly than usual about the ride Coa gave Tale of Ekati… although I thought it was terrific.

nope, we were at friends houses for each race so I never had to pay attention to the channel - makes sense though - thanks!
I think the jockey did a great job = the trainer is an idiot if he blames him!
That child horrified me. I have seldom seen anything so vulgar.
Sad but happy
I’m not a racing person, but as an eventer type person, I really wanted a TC this year Just to give us something to hang onto in the horse world. Eventing is having a hard time.
But - I thought that was the best piece of horsemanship I have seen in a long time. Considering what was on the line, Kent has my utmost respect for knowing he had “no horse” on the day and cantering BB in for another day.
Geez, I wish some of our young eventers would do the same. He has my utmost respect for putting the horse ahead of anything else.
Were any of BB’s previous races held in this kind of very hot humid weather? Some athletes, equine and otherwise, really don’t do heat well, even if they are fit and prepared. I have read posts that mention heat as a factor, but what do folks know about horses having an aversion to hot weather in racing?
I think Dutrow’s choice to not shoot him with the steroid screwed him in the end. He wanted to prove his horse was all that even with a cracked hoof and no steroids, and he didn’t need them to win, but guess what.?? HE DID!! That wasn’t even the same horse out there today… and he totally gave up! … Heat or not heat… that horse had no desire to win.
It just wasn’t his day! Just love these arm chair vets saying hes lame.
You would look lame too if someone was pulling you up from a dead gallop!
The horse is fine, Give it a rest.Oh and BRAVO to KEnt! Great horseman, no sense letting him gallop on when he knew he had no horse.
Good on him. And for the nasty remarks about Rick?? Come one people! Show some class!
I bet he runs in in the BC Classic! Still an awesome Animal.:)
Who was that last horse that ran the Belmont wire to wire like that? It really was amazing!
Da’ Tara
Does anybody know how they came up with that name?
I enjoy probing name stories, and I must admit, I can’t get anything from that one on the surface. If it’s a reference to person, place, or his bloodlines, I’m missing it. Has to be a story behind it somewhere.
PHEW!! If anyone remembers my first post… yes I was completely for this happening. I’m too tired (100 degree heat here today) and really wanna just highlite some points after reading 99% of the posts tonight.
BB lost!! Sorry for those of you rooting for him… I DO I SWEAR I DO… want a TC winner… just not him… ok… just not Dutrow. I just wish CD could’ve held out to be the one to do it… just for his dam’s sake of carrying the tradition on.
BIG congrats to Zito, not only pulling an upset, with with his longshot runner! And Alex, he got no publicity on this, 22 year old kid will go down in history as the rookie ( with only 3? G1 stakes wins under his belt) upsetting BB and taking it wire to wire… WOW kid!
BB looked like he had a few funny steps, IDK if I’d call it lame, mighta been just the camera angle.
Did anyone else notice how BAD BB was out of the 1 hole? He seemed to slame into Guadalcanal (who I was rooting for!) at the start and then bobbled so much to get to the outside… he just did not look happy from that rail post.
Big congrats to Denis of Cork as well. He ran a game race… Kudos and I hope to see more of this guy.
IMHO… I think it was a detox from steriods and the heat that got to BB, simple as that. AND BIG FAT KUDOS to Kent, awesome job, love the man!
OK… I think those are my points that I can remember!
As an aside… I sat and watched the race with my SO’s family - all non-horse ppl - bet me $5 that BB would win, I had the rest of the field. They were sooo mad as I cheered on LOUDLY Da’Tara down the stretch, but hey, I like Zito better than Dutrow… simple as that!
