Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

just placed my order. i am too excited! 1st had the rosemary mint, then the citrus ginger, now awaiting the arrival of the sugar and spice wahoo!

Renn- considering we live close to each other; i regularly put mine in the microwave for 15-25 seconds and it’s perfect. Although another poster’s suggestion for putting it in some hot water while you clean your tack isn’t a bad idea either

That’s what I’ve been doing- putting it in hot water- but the hot water tap is down the aisle in the wash rack, and the microwave is right there in the tack room, so lazy bums like me don’t like to walk.

I also worry that tweaking the formula might not be appropriate for people in other climates, or would make the balm less awesome. I don’t mind nuking something for 15 seconds- I do that anyway if I’m going to oil tack- but I would mind it if instead of sinking nicely into the tack like it does now, any changes to the formula made it sit on top of the leather and drive me batshit insane.

Good points all! I will leave it alone. I want none of my customers going insane, at least not in a way that I can be held responsible for . . .

Well, you have made people enjoy cleaning tack, and I’m sure some would argue that’s certifiably insane right there.

Seriously wishing I had a scratch-and-sniff computer right now. Thinking there may be a lot of saddle soap purchasing for Christmas gifts in my future…

Regarding the consistency/seasons balm issue, my jar of balm became a bit grainy when the weather got cool (mostly in the 60s), but it warms right up with the heat from my hands and rubs in like butter, just like it did in the summer.

In this cooler weather, though, the balm has been making my saddle feel a bit waxier, and the saddle has started to squeak the day after I condition it with Higher Standards balm! I think the fresh balm on a saddle sitting in a 60-65 degree tack room is firming up before it gets completely absorbed into the leather. It’s still my favorite conditioner, but our tack room temp will drop another 5-10 degrees when winter comes (and the arena temp will be a full 30-40 degrees lower), and I’m not sure how it will perform…

I got a steal of a deal on a PJ Delgrange Light. When I saw it on ebay I knew it was in need of some love. Got it in the mail today and poor saddle probably hasn’t seen oil or balm in years. It was clean, but very dry.
I bought Higher Standards soap & balm a few months ago and have loved using it on my other saddle. I keep great care of my tack so I really didn’t see much difference. The balm did make my saddle much grippier which I am so happy about.

Anyway! I was finally able to see just how awesome this soap & balm are. I did use a coat of oil on the saddle before I used the balm because it was in desperate need of some oil.
I’m so happy  This saddle looks gorgeous now! I just need some more balm now haha!

Atemis!

Those before and afters are AMAZING!! May we have permission to share on our FB page?

And, I have a request for a specific review – we’ve shipped the first two batches of the Starla’s Sugar & Spice out this week. I’m dying to know how people like it! I came up with that combination completely on my own, after experimentation, and I would LOVE some feedback!

Of course! That would be great!

For holiday gifts I think in terms of price points. I’d love to get a $19.99 package and maybe a $29.99 package. For myself I’d like to get a collection at $49.99.

Starla’s Sugar and Spice… Yum! I didn’t know what to expect, because when I think spice I think cinnamon, and since there isn’t any cinnamon I couldn’t imagine the scent. It’s sweet and pleasantly spicy, without being overly strong or sharp smelling. I’m going to go back to huffing my soap now.

ETA: But I did like the other sponges better. This new one is a little too soft (as in not dense or firm) for my taste. Not that it’s a big deal, it still works, just throwing it out there :).

I don’t like the new sponges much either.

but, I ordered same stock number, same item number and they arrived different. They work, but I’m on the search for some to replace them.

So, glad you like the new scent! I do too!

Well that’s rude! What’s next, describing a t-shirt as being red but when you get it it’s actually blue??

Also, the leather balm makes a nice moisturizing treatment for human skin.

I can see it now:

Higher Standards skin care…saddle soap inspired. “Take care of your skin the way you’d care for a saddle”

Erm…maybe not

Got my order today! Love love love the new jars with instructions and the different labels for the balm and soap. Subtle and classy. Keep in mind I had the square sample jars for the balm so this new circular jar is a major upgrade. As always prompt shipping, love the candies, and personal card. Thanks for the business card, now I can pass it out to others!

Now for the real review; the Starla’s sugar and spice is such a fabulous scent. Perfect for fall- seriously love it! You knocked this one out of the park Libby! cheers reminds me a lot of pumpkin spice lattes that I adore

I’m so glad you liked it! It is the first one where I created it by fiddling with the scents on my own – My garbage that week had a very pleasant smell as I fiddled with adjusting the spice scents until I got it where I wanted it!

And I agree 150% – whereas I liked the look of the square jars, they were a pain to fool with! I will have to steal these quotes and post a reminder about the limited edition scent on the FB page!

And, I quite like what I’m working on for December too!! So much fun!

I was thinking something more like “It moisturizes and gives a healthy glow to dead cow skin, just imagine what it can do for you!”

Are you going to have a gift pack of balm and soap for Christmas gifts? I want to order some for myself but would love to order some gift type for my friends.

Yes! I’m working on the Christmas options now.

I really do like the size and shape of the jars, and especially that the don’t break, crack or dent if you drop them on a concrete floor!
