Bensmom saddle soap - the review thread (if that's okay with Bensmom)

Can I just take a moment to say how exciting it is for Bensmom that this thread has endured for 10 months, 1200+ replies, and a gazillion views!

Good job, Libby. We LOVE your products!!!

Thank you so much, guys!!!

I’ve been offline pretty much since Thursday, because I’ve been OFF RIDING MY PONY!!! Wheeee!

She did her first dressage show today, at the end of three days of a fabulous clinic and I’m still smiling!

And, yes, we have a wholesale sheet – just send me a note and I’ll give you the info!

Frizzle, my Vanilla Mint has your name on it and it is only 24 days til you’ll be here, but still – we need to rescue the soap!

Congrats on the show!!

So I have convinced my tack-cleaning-phobic friend to take my old products, and I am gearing up to finally order some Higher Standards! But I can’t decide which scent to try. Also, will you be coming out with any new ā€œspecialā€ scents in the near future, as that may impact my decision as well!

Hmmm – good question! We might have a new special scent in March, but nothing is firm on it yet.

All the scents seem to be equally popular – if you are interested in the current special scent, you should grab that one before it is gone! It is the Striker’s Vanilla Citrus and it smells a little like a dreamsicle!

What scents do COTH’ers like best?

And, Frizzle hasn’t updated it here, but the SOAP IS FREE!!!

It is somewhat the worse for wear, but it is at least free from prison.

The Citrus Ginger is a HUGE hit in my barn. Most of us like that one best. A few folks are loyal to Sugar n’ Spice. Don’t get us wrong, we like the other flavors too, but those are the ones that people screw open just to ā€œgrab a whiffā€ even if they’re not cleaning their tack that day. And needless to say, ā€œa final post-ride wipedown with a little saddle soapā€ has never been this popular before we found Higher Standards soap.:lol::lol:

But you could probably get me to keel over if you made something in a pine-ish scent or a tart, lemony scent.

I personally love the rosemary-mint. Agree with j4njenny that would love a more tart citrus scent than the citrus-ginger which is just a little sweet for me, maybe grapefruit. Before Higher Standards, M.O.S.S. was my go to saddle soap and I love their citrus basil scent. One of my favorite scents (not a saddle soap) is cilatntro-lime. I’m also a huge fan of anything eucalyptus (partly Stanford nostalgia). Pineapple-Mint? I’ve never cleaned my tack as much as I do since I switched to Higher Standards. I know Missy’s folks (who are completely OCD about tack cleaning) also love it, but not sure where their scent preferences run - they seem too busy oohing and aahing over the suppleness and cleanliness of the leather they have just cleaned

Saddle soap that smells like a dreamsicle?! SIGN ME UP!!!

I LOVE this stuff, and both friends I gifted it to for Christmas are addicted as well! I love the Lavender Vanilla.

I also want to share that I used it on my leather open fronts the other day. I try not to school in them often because they get pretty banged up and there was some crud on there I had chalked up to the leather wearing off. WELL. A couple minutes of scrubbing with Higher Standards, and they look brand new!!! Woot-woot!!

Striker’s Vanilla Citrus is definitely the best scent, although I may be a little biased ;).

:D[/QUOTE]

Wait what?!? Soap is free? Am I missing something? I got some of this for Christmas and have been cleaning my stuff like I’m in pony club again. Oh how I wish the conditioner was scented too!! My English tack has been sitting in bags for the last 5 years (while I’ve been riding reiners) and I’m just now getting back into eventing. So everything is coming out of storage and getting cleaned and conditioned.

The rosemary-mint is the only scent I’ve smelled but I’m in love with it!! And I love the way my tack room smells when I open the door!

Funny story, I spent a sunny day cleaning everything a few Saturdays ago and had to run into town to meet up with a girlfriend. Needed to give a borrowed saddle back and it was a good excuse for drinks. I washed up before heading into town but the whole time we were talking and catching up I kept smelling the rosemary-mint. And I kept sniffing my hands. And even made her smell them too. It was good for a laugh.

Ah, no, the soap isn’t free in the $ sense! Frizzle’s soap was trapped (skim back several pages for the saga of COTH’ers helping with suggestions of how to get it out) in a wall and she was finally able to get it free!!

So glad you guys all like the scents!!

I want to know story of how Frizzle liberated her soap!

Ok, here is the Soap Liberation Story.

For the past two weekends, my BO had a huge crew at the farm installing lots of cameras, etc. for security (since they found a horse head, like, 1/4 mile down the street and we’ve all been on pins & needles for years because of all the stealing and butchering alive of horses). Anyways. So, on Saturday night they were installing a camera right over that same wall where my soap was stuck, and they dropped some aluminum screws in there.

Well, the guy that lives in the little cottage and cleans the stalls, etc. had to fashion a giant-ball-of-duct-tape-on-a-stick apparatus in order to retrieve said screws, and in the process he saw my soap. I know I’ve mentioned it in passing a few times, but I made all my attempted rescue missions when I was there alone (mostly because I looked like a huge goof). So, Barn Guy decided he’s going to get the soap out for me.

When I got there on Sunday, Barn Guy asked BO if she has a hoe, because he thinks that will be the best way to get the soap out. BO said no, so BG goes off and finds a simple garden rake. Using that, and what appeared to be either a longe line with the lash missing, or some kind of thin metal pole, he somehow managed to manipulate the soap onto the garden rake and get it out of the wall. I’m a bit unclear on the particulars, as I was hand-grazing my horse (who came up with a puffy fetlock, thanks to lots of yahoo-ing around the paddock), but it did look like he was using the ā€œchopstickā€ technique that someone had mentioned earlier.

So, now my soap is finally free!!! Unfortunately, the scent is mostly gone, probably from having the lid off for something like 6 weeks, but at least I don’t have to think about it being trapped every time I walk past that wall. It was driving me c.r.a.z.y!!!

I do have pics of the soap right after it was saved. Don’t have any pics of the actual rescue, as I felt it might be super weird (BG was shirtless, and I thought it would be strange to take pics, even though…let’s just say I would definitely not be gazing googily-eyed at said pics–or gazing at them at all!).

And thus ends the Soap Stuck in The Wall Saga!

Ah, see I told you to try a hoe. The garden variety.

Awwwww, sad! Maybe once you take off the top layer of soap, the soap underneath will still be scented?

Have you covered up the gap on top of the wall to prevent any further tragedies?? If not, get to it!

I second scubed’s suggestion for a grapefruit or lime-herb scent - lime with basil or lime with cilantro would be great!

Libby, Since you asked, I really like all the scents, but I think that I like Buzz’s Citrus Ginger the best.

I’m a huge vanilla but I have a Ginger Lime candle I love I always smell it and think it would make a great soap.

Just wanted to confirm that Libby (aka ā€œLolaā€) is indeed awesome! I had such a great time with her and her whacky crew this weekend at Red Hills! (I can say ā€œwhackyā€ because I, too, am clearly very firmly in that category.) And it was so nice to finally meet some fellow COTHers IRL. Good times!

We did have a great time!! I have to tell y’all – this was like a dream come true, and it is all because of the encouragement I got here. We were sponsors this weekend, had a gorgeous vendor booth and heard comments like ā€œhey, this stuff is like crack for leather!ā€

Next month is a one year anniversary – we are planning a special scent for April, named for a very special horse. Give me some ideas of scents y’all would like to see!

Btw. Some of your ā€œleather crackā€ will be going to Germany with a friend.
