Best Cu/Zn and biotin all in one supplement

Hi all,

Haven’t posted in a while. Have some questions on what to feed my 21 year old TB plus a half leased pony to address a couple issues.

Issue 1: scratches and hoof issues
My old guy is still in work 6 days a week. He mostly does low level flatwork and small courses, and lots of hacks outside. Hopefully we will get out to schooling jumper shows this summer but definitely nothing crazy. Overall, he looks and feels fantastic. He gets plenty of age appropriate maintenance for his various age related infirms, but one of the things I’ve never really been able to fix is the scratches on his hind pasterns. I have a good prescription ointment that makes it go away, but it always comes back. Also, he is prone to cellulitis and recently had a big blow up on his hind leg, a couple days after nicking his coronet band on a cavaletti. I would like to put him on a copper and zinc supplement to see that helps prevent the scratches. He does sometimes get abscesses, loses shoes, etc so I’m wondering if I should add biotin as well. Preferably I would find a supplement that adds all 3 of these in adequate amounts so I don’t have to add 3 more things to his already somewhat complicated feed plan.

TB eats 6 lbs of Purina Impact Pro per day, plus a maintenance scoop of Super Sport, and 100 ml of Mad Barn W-3 oil. He gets free choice orchard grass hay while stalled, 4 lbs of soaked alfalfa pellets at lunch, and is on pasture at night (round bale in winter). He also gets Zyrtec and Equioxx daily, so in all it ends up being a lot of stuff for the barn workers to give him. I feel very reluctant to add anything else to the list.

Issue 2: perfect pony with thin soles
We just started half leasing a wonderful pony for my daughter, who became lame on his left front after a regular farrier appointment. We did a full workup with the vet, including x rays, and the only issue found was thin soles. Our farrier is very well respected in the area and works closely with several top vets. After examining the X-rays, he had a plan going forward that involved adding pour-in pads and adjusting his trimming technique. After pads went on, pony was dramatically better. However, he was reshod last week and became sore again for a few days. I know growing sole takes time, but I’m hoping that adding biotin to his diet will help. Suggestions welcomed.

Pony eats 1 lb of Enrich Plus per day, orchard grass hay and is on pasture with a muzzle at night (round bale in winter with no muzzle). No other supplements.

If I ended finding something that had all three things, I would just feed it to both!

Vermont Blend Pro has all three. You’d have to take a look at how it fits into the rest of your diet, since it’s not really something that’s usually added on top of fortified feed. Maybe the version without selenium would work for you? It would also let you drop the SuperSport.

I started my horse on SmartHoof by Smartpak about two months ago. I live in a very high iron area, so I wanted to try a copper/zinc supplement to help balance out the iron/improve his hoof quality. Obv it’s way too early to tell if there’s any improvement, but it has all three ingredients you’re looking for.

I feed the pelleted version and my semi picky eater has no issue with it. It’s also reasonably priced (~$25/mo).

MadBarn also has a copper/zinc supplement, but after the cost of shipping from Canada (and now the impending tariffs……) the cost was almost the same as the SmartHoof but without the convenience.

If you want ONLY cu/zn/b7, Hay Harmony is the only one I know of

It’s not inexpensive, $0.92/serving if you buy the big size. You can add all 3 separately for less.

Vermont Blend does have all 3, 25mg biotin over HH’s 20mg, but the same amount of cu and zn, but it’s $.99/serving if you buy the big size

So it really comes down to whether you want to pay for convenience, or go cheaper with a bit of inconvenience

Using mad barns 3:1 and biotin comes out to $.34/day

oops. Edit:

The link to the Nu Hoof was confusing as I figured out the scoop amounts in weight by gm first. It says “Scoop included is 18g” so I figured out 11lb = 4994g and then /18g = 277 days supply or $0.24 a serving. But then it says above it "Feed 1 scoop (2.93oz) per day which is about 87.9g/day which makes it about 60 servings then. 87.9g a day is a lot of powder to feed and I find the label to be confusing.

If scoop is 18g and then you have to feed 87.9g a day, do you need to feed almost 5 scoops of this powder a day then??? Am I missing something?

The MB 3:1 has 100 and 300mg cu/zn respectively.

Hay Harmony and Vermont Blend have 300 and 900.

If you 3x the MB serving to get that 300/900, then it’s $.51 for that. Add another $.17 for their biotin and it’s up to $.68. Definitely cheaper than the Hay Harmony

Nu-Hoof has 125mg cu and 360mg zn, for reference

In other words - consider how much of cu/zn you want to start adding, in order to calculate your total cost.

It’s a pellet, not a powder. You feed one scoop per day.

I think the scoop itself weighs 18 grams. One scoop contains 2.93 oz of product.

If you have too many horses, the shipping from MadBarn is free…

I recently bought the Copper/Zinc in the 5 kg size and there was no shipping fee, FYI.

@Simkie - but if you feed one scoop (18g) then the 11lb or 4994g would mean that it would last 277 days 1lb = 454g so 11 x 454g = 4994g) so 4994/18 = 277.

According to my math, 2.93 oz is about 87.9g ( 1 oz = about 30g. So 2.93oz x 30 = 87.9g) so then the 4994g would last about 60 days. This is where I’m confused.

So it says one scoop = 18g and then it says 1 scoop = 2.93oz which are vastly different weights. (18g vs 87.9g)

Right.

The scoop ITSELF weighs 18 grams.

If you put the empty scoop on the scale, it weighs 18 grams.

It HOLDS 2.93 oz.

If you fill up the scoop, and put it on the scale, it weighs 18 grams PLUS 2.93 oz.

Oh the empty scoop weighs 18gm!! Now I get it. I was very confused lol! Why didn’t they write “1 empty scoop = 18g” lol.

Thanks for the replies so far!

Any idea re: palatability for either MB or the Hay Harmony?

The hay harmony is pretty strong smelling, I had to start with very small amounts and build up. No issues with Madbarn, the scoop is pretty small.

I will update when mine from MB gets here. I will say neither of the ones it is aimed for are picky so my feedback may be of limited use there.

The company shipped immediately, like within hours!

Biotion 800Z has all 3 but I don’t know mgs per serving off the top of my head

At 75mg Cu, 300mg Zn, and 50mg biotin, there are better options with more cu/zn, and less wasted biotin

hey I did put a disclaimer on there lol
