Best everyday half chaps?

I’ve had my half chaps for years and they’re slowly starting to die. The zippers are broken, leather is getting worn thin, etc.

I’d like a replacement that can handle everyday wear and tear while still looking nice. I don’t think I want to go custom as I don’t have a ton of money to spend, unless they’re less expensive then I’m assuming they are. I don’t at all like the look of suede, leather girl here.

I do really like the look of the Tredstep Pro G2 Half Chaps, much nicer then what I have now.

What are my best/most affordable options? How expensive are the basic customs? I do secretly covet the piping look on black leather chaps.

Thank you!

I have Tredstep. Can’t remember the style name but they are the ones with the side zipper and front and top buckle closers. I have had them since fall of 2011. I ride everyday, sometimes multiple horses. I would highly recommend any Tredstep half chap! They make a great product.

I have worn the Tredstep Deluxe for years. I absolutely love them and they hold up well. I ride 3-5 a day. I had a problem with my last pair with the snap sticking. It finally broke. They took them right back and gave me a new pair.

I have a pair of leather chaps from here: http://www.justchaps.com/

I use them every time I ride and I love them. I wish I’d bought several pairs at once (the ones I bought they don’t make anymore).

I’ll have to look into the deluxes! There were some floating around ebay as well, thank you!

These! I have these and I love them! I ride on average 25-30 times per week and they’ve held up perfectly!

Another vote for the Tredstep Deluxe here. They’ve held up better than any other half chaps I’ve had and fit like a glove.

Also, I believe they’ve fixed the snap problem, or at least that is what I was told in a tack shop. And I have not had any problems with the snaps on my most recent pair.

Another vote! I’m on my second pair of the Tredstep Deluxe.

The first pair is still going strong after about three years – but my (previously) half-chap-hating husband now wears them every day.

I had an old pair of the Ariat All-Around II’s that I liked and wore A LOT for several years. They were finally in shreds. In general, I avoid all things Ariat, but I felt like I got my money’s worth out of those half chaps. The accordion-style pleats made them a much better fit for me than other suede 1/2 chaps I had tried at that time. No clue about the latest incarnation, but they seem to be available at much lower prices than the Tredsteps.

The journeyman’s customs start at $175. I have had mine for 5 or 6 years now and they wear like iron. The biggest benefit is that there is no elastic panel to stretch out (my biggest issue with off the rack half chaps).

I love my tredsteps but mine wear out quick. Like 2 years. My straps on the bottom always come unsticked from the chap, the top edge wears off, and the inside calf gets really thin. But they fit so darn well that I still buy them. I have customs that I don’t wear. Prefer the tredsteps to them.

Oh man, I so want a reason/excuse to splurge on custom half chaps. But I have old Ariats that just won’t die and backup pairs too. Pout!

I have these Horze chaps and they’re holding up really well. I’ve had them for probably about 18 months and the only sign they have of wear is that one of the silver tabs came off the side. They’re very nice in person and fit better than any other chaps I’ve had (including Tredsteps).

Me too, I have them in brown and black and love the fit and durability. I use a little WD40 on the snaps if they start to stick.

Thanks for the info! I will certainly look into my options!

I have the Tredstep Custom Fit ones and love them. They’re a little different from the deluxe ones but I can’t complain. Love them.

my treadsteps didn’t wear out but the did stretch to the point where they did not fit anymore. I am REALLY happy with my Dy’on’s. Pricy but they’ve held up to 2 years of full time riding (2-6 per day 6x per week) and still look brand new.

WD40 plus some sandpaper will take off the oxidation and lubricate the snaps. Works like a charm.

I recently picked up some Tredsteps but for half chaps that do not die, the (NOT easy care) Dublins are indestructible. They do stretch a fair amount which is the only reason I;m replacing mine, but OMG, the things do not die.

I have Tredstep Custom Fits and love them. I’m just a tad bummed that I lost a pile of weight after I bought them so they don’t fit quite as nice any more. I’d definitely buy another pair of them if these wear out.

My Ariat Classics (not even sure if they make them anymore) have held up for something like 5 years of riding, plus 5 years of sitting in my tack trunk. The only perceptible wear is smoothing on the inner calf suede. And some dirt.

I don’t know if they make that style anymore though, and they’re not exactly the prettiest things - but dang, I’ll be surprised if they don’t last me another 5 years or more.
