Best Headlamp for Early Morning & Evening Farm Chores?

Well, its that time of year again… flashlight and headlamp time that is. I want to get my husband a new headlamp for Christmas. What do you have that you really like that is very bright, and stays that way? I also like the ones you can tilt down, so the light isn’t just straight ahead.

The problem with the ones we have (2 versions of Energizer - one cheap, one expensive, Ozark Trail and no clue what brand the other one is) is that over time, even when you put in brand new batteries, they just aren’t as bright as they were when new. And we treat our pretty rough - out in rain and snow, they get dropped, whacked on things… :o Which is probably part of the issue with the less expensive models we’ve tried. They can’t stand up to multiple times a day use and abuse.

Bonus points for anything I can get on Amazon Prime.

My husband has gotten me 2 from Amazon, GRDE military grade ones. Rechargeble, charge lasts me 3 evenings (approx 3 hours use). They are BRIGHT!! Only drawback that I think they have is that they are heavy, and not comfortable unless your’re wearing them over a winter hat of some type…so for me, not good for summer use.

Like this one @DinkyDonk ?

Shining Buddy LED Headlamp. Amazon Prime, $13.00. It’s bright, lightweight and the battery lasts a long time. I have them stashed everywhere 😊.

That would be the one!

I’ve had good luck with the Black Diamond ones. Often I pick up clearance models at REI. I like to have a few around. The one I use every day usually gets about 50 hours out of them before I need to change the batteries. I like ones that can be very bright, and then I use the on the lowest setting most of the time. The brightness is useful for special situations of course. This one uses 4 AAAA batteries which makes it a little heavy but it’s still the one I use. I have a few cheaper ones around as well as disaster preparedness, in case for example we needed extra ones during a power outage.

I got mine through Amazon - I dont remember the brand but they were less than $10 each, tilt up and down, have three different modes and the best part…they are rechargeable! I’m done with dealing with batteries. I just plug it in after I use it so it’s always ready to go.

I like the petzel, as low as $14. Mine went on for ages and was even exposed to paddling on a dragon boat and outrigger on the ocean, paddling in the rain. Not barn work, but if it survives salt water, it’ll do even better in a barn

I have this head lamp. I really like it! It is a little heavier then others I’ve used, but its really not that bad. I love how bright it is.

I’m not sure about the ones with strap that goes over the top of the head (vs the ones that are just a headband). Since I will be using it too, and I always have my long hair up in a bun to do chores, I’m thinking it would have to be off center to get that contraption on my head.

But I’m still looking at all the options presented so far. Been trying to figure out the exact models I have already to know the exact lumens they put out so I can make sure the new headlamp is stronger. But sadly, they don’t seem to have model numbers of anything distinguishable on them to for me to look up.

I just buy the inexpensive lamp that clips on the brim of a hat. They last for a long time and put off good light. I will dig around for an example.

This is the model we currently have.

I have one of these and love it so much that I’ve given several more as gifts.
The LEDs point down, rather than out, which works better for me. And the beanie itself is nice and warm.

Bought this one last winter and love love LOVE it! Not crazy about the red/blue flashing lights mode…wish it had just a red light mode for summer to reduce attraction to bugs. But for winter chores it’s awesome!

Saw your comment about your hair in a bun. I wear mine in a ‘half bun’ (I don’t pull my ponytail all the way through and leave it looped. I just position the strap over the top of my head off to the side and motor on. In really cold weather I have a toboggan on over my half ponytail and it’s a total non issue.

Bright and rechargeable, 3 ounces…

@EquineJunky - that one is says it is 8,000 lumens!?! That’s nearly as bright as the flood light on my barn. I wouldn’t want to blind anyone with it. LOL But they will for sure see you coming!

There is a high and low setting. I even use it to jog the driveway! LOL

FWIW, not a headlamp, but I bought a couple of portable lights from Harbor Freight that are round with LED bulbs on a swivel base and have really STRONG magnets on the bottom of the base. I can turn them on and stick them on the inside walls of my run in shed and angle the light wherever I want then pull them off and store them by sticking them on the wall or ceiling of the storage area. They work great, are bright, and cost around $8-$9 on sale, but you do have to change out the batteries. I could go with rechargeable batteries, but when those run out of juice you’re immediately without light.

I have this one: https://www.amazon.ca/Flashlight-Juzihao-Adjustable-Waterproof-Rechargeable-Flashlights/dp/B07TDPW3XD/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=headlamp&qid=1571312943&sr=8-16 and love it. I have had it for around 4 years and it’s still holding strong. I like that the light can be adjusted up & down depending on my needs. I like the middle strap/over the head strap, and it easily slides to the side if I have my hair up.

Those of you with the rechargeable models that have had them for a while - have you had to buy new rechargeable batteries yet? I’m all for buying fewer regular batteries and rechargeable batteries have probably gotten better since we last had an item with batteries that recharged. And while I think I could remember to plug it in, there used to be issues (long ago probably) that you needed to let the battery drain down before recharging or you’d wear them out (doing lots of small charges).

We had bad experiences with rechargeable things a while back, granted - so I’ve avoided buying things with rechargeable batteries. But perhaps its time to give it another try?
