I’m posting this cuz I can’t stand the one made by energize. Its a clunky light on a flimsy headband. With a bunch of modes I don’t need (blinking/flashing/red/etc). And what hat do use it with not? Only brimless hats, correct? thanks.
bump…I want one too…
PETZL are awesome!
The best ones in my collection of derelict head lamps are the two (identical) that I bought at Walmart–pkg deal two head lamps and two flashlights for $12. They are every bit as crappy as the expensive ones. :dead:
Mine all seem to consume batteries.

I’ve tried so many and they all seem to be about the same though as mentioned above the Petzls are nice - they have various models to fit your needs but can get expensive. Mine is so old that I forgot the model.
My biggest issue is batteries - I go through so many it’s ridiculous. I’m actually going to look into a rechargeable headlamp.
I also burn through AAA batteries like it’s my job!
I have a couple; the Energizer one, which I also don’t care for, and one from Walmart’s camping section which is probably the same as Hermein uses.
Really high output, USB chargeable. A bit heavy so annoying if you are poo-picking a field but it works!

I only use mine once a week when I am out before dark to load to drive to the hunt club --I ALWAYS smack myself in the nose putting on the headlamp. It slips down or up and wacks me. OUCH! But it’s great once I have it on right. Oh, and I learned the hard way, just because I can see my horse, doesn’t mean he can see me. He and I were camping the first time I used it. I put it on to check on him in the night on his high-line. He about came unglued. He had no idea what was behind that bright light!
I have Black Diamond ones. I like that they are dimmable. The last one I bought is a “Spot” model.
I use mine all the time and love them for barn chores.
Walmart had these in a bin for sale for $.75.-:

Also some similar with a band for head lights.
Wish I had tried the ones with the band also and bought more than one, at those prices.
The one I bought works surprisingly well, clips somewhere or hold it in your mouth when you have your hands full, is very little.
Fits in a pocket, is so small and thin, the size of a very small, thin measuring tape.
I have a wonderful headlamp. I use it every night to feed/hay, etc my 4 horses. 2 months now, and still bright, no replacement batteries, and the strap does not slip. I will check on the brand when I get home.
The ones I had before dimmed in just a few days, with new batteries a must often, and the strap was garbage.
This one has a lovely clicking tilt mechanism to aim correctly.
LL Bean has a nice selection on line. I got a somewhat pricey one from them but it was so long ago that I can’t even remember how many years I’ve had it. It’s held up really well and I use it all the time in all sorts of weather. It’s a Petzl or Black Diamond. I keep in on low for the most past and the batteries last well. Has brighter options which is so handy when needed in an emergency. Good for checking wounds etc.
Petzl has been my fave thus far.
those are great- last forever, love that they just clip on.
I like the ones that have the option of a red light. I use the normal light in most cases but the red one is better when petting ponies at night. My mare does not like to have white light shined on her- yes she is very special. Folks may want to check out REI they have good products and you can easily do side by side comparisons of various models. I can’t get by without a headlamp in the winter for horse chores. Plus just super handy for multiple things.

As a life long Mt. Climber I suggest checking out the various Climbing, backpacking websites. That is what Black Diamond is.
I’ve got a collection of several generations going back to the 70’s. The backpacking and climbing community market is what drove the design and refinement over the decades. There are a number of different types based on need and expectations.
Funny Black Diamond’s name came up. This company was started and still owned by a childhood friend early climbing buddy of mine. Wish I had bought into it instead of horses.
FENIX!!
Petzl for the money very unimpressed with.
Have the one listed above off Amazon and while it is very bright it is too clunky and needs to be charged constantly.
Have bought many, many cheap ones and they all suck.
Will only buy Fenix going forward.
ETA My Fenix is so comfortable I constantly forget I am wearing it. I often hear “why are you wearing a headlamp?” lol.
And the cool thing about the one with the red light is in addition to being more subtle for night checks. It makes your horses have Red Eyes. Kinda freaky. My two were playing in the paddock this evening and all you could see was the dark of the horse and RED eyes. Like devil horses. Spooky!!!
