Best Leather Conditioner?

I am a tack cleaning fanatic… But I still use neatsfoot oil and glycerin soap. I am trying to use up what I have left, so I can get some newer, better leather care products (like Bensmom’s soap!! Unfortunately, my glycerin soap bar is taking a lot longer than I thought it would to use up, but I WILL get this magical soap as soon as it’s all used up  )

Anyway, I guess my question is this: What is the best leather conditioner out there? I have tried a Stubben one (I believe it was Stubben Hammanol (spelling?)), but I did not like it. At all. It left a dull, waxy sheen on my saddle .

I really don’t want to spend a lot of money, either.

I’m bumping because I also need to find a good conditioner. Don’t try snowshoe it also leaves a waxy residue.

bensmom has a wonderful conditioner as well! I sampled some a friend had and promptly came home and ordered both some soap and conditioner. Can’t wait for it to get here!

I like Effax Leder-balsam.

I’ve found the Hammanol really only does well on Stubben products. It does very nice things to my Stubben saddles. It does not like my not Stubben bridles or not Stubben western saddle at all though. It does weird things. No damage, but it doesn’t soak in and do what it should.

It seems to be manufactured for the specific tanning process that Stubben uses.

Interesting! That would make sense, too, given that the two saddles I used it on were a Crosby and an Anky.

I like the Belvoir Leather Balsam.

hammanol is okay, i personally think that it probably only works for stubben - to me, it smells like a barbeque and leaves a gross, oily residue.

i’m a hardcore glycerin/neatsfoot girl too, but i’ve branched out a few times.

i like supple (a leather soap conditioner) i believe that dover sells it. i use it, rubbing vigorously, and then while the suds are still on the tack, wipe it off with a clean rag. it brings a lot of the old dirt and residue that stuck to the leather via oil/conditioner out.

horseman’s onestep is great for leather that has not been cared for well. apply it liberally, and then take a clean rag (one tthat has warm water wrung out) and rub it off vigorously. you will probably go through a few rags before the accumulated dirt completely dissipates. follow up with glycerin soap to get excess onestep off and oil/conditioner of choice.

i bought passier leaderbalsam because i had a lot of people on COTH encourage it, but it really didnt do much for me. my leather is already broken in, so it didnt make a difference in that department – but my complaint with the balsams is they leave a residue that collects dirt/fur from the horse’s face.

i’ve tried leather honey, which also has a following - it’s a conditioner. it’s okay, but didn’t hydrate too well.

i stay away from hydrophane, i dont think it conditions very well either.

i like effax leader-combi for cleaning really grimy, unkept bridles.

so, as you can see, i still prefer good old glycerin and neatsfoot – but for the sake of my tack i do branch out and try other conditioners/cleaners that get out the grime/dirt the gylercin/neatsfoot combo can miss.

i should probably post these here:

I really like plain old mink oil and Australian Leather Keep on my non Stubben things (I use them to waterproof my Stubben saddles too). They condition and weatherproof in one go.

I didn’t even see those threads… Thanks for posting!

There seems to be a lot of people who like the Effax leder-balsam, so I guess I’ll give it a little while (just to be sure I’m spending my money wisely… It would be just my luck to hear about an amazing product as soon as I buy this one) and then I’ll try it!

no problem! i tend to search the cloud/tag options often.

PSA: if you didn’t like the hammanol, you might not like effax or passier leaderbalm. they’re a similar consistency.

i forgot to add: i really like my carr & day & martin saddle soap.

I disagree with the hammanol being similar to the effax. As a previous poster noted, the hammanol does not really seem to penetrate the leather very well–seems almost like a surface polish. And it is white and pasty while the effax is soft and gooey and smells great!

I like Oakwood Conditioner.

The Effax balsam separated on me (not sure why, hot weather, time–a jar tends to last a long time for me) while the Carr & Day & Martin/Belvoir did not.

Not a huge deal but the oily residue on top of the Effax was messy.

I love the Effax cleaner on the other hand since it doesn’t leave a residue on the leather.

Bensmom’s products! I’ve used them on bridles, halters, reins, paddock boots, leather dress shoes, 15+ year old Coach purses + the leather seats in my Tahoe.

No greasy feeling, heavenly smell . . . check it out!

It is seriously good stuff. My favorite so far.

I agree Stubben Hammanol reeks, but it does a fantastic job on leather in poor (even abused) condition.
I got a full-size sample along with their saddlesoap (which smells great!) when I bought my new saddle.
So far it has restored:

*A pair of chaps that hung uncared-for almost 10years in my barn - stiff as cardboard, they are now soft as “buttah” even after hanging in said barn for another month.

*my 12yo Dehner paddock boots - worn almost daily and hardly ever cleaned, let alone conditioned. I treated them before a trip to Spain and they did me proud and did not stain my luggage (packed them in an old pillowcase).

*Dover leather nameplate bracelets I was not wearing due to stiffness - now flexible & comfortable after 1 treatment

Agree with Bens Moms “Higher Standards” Soap and Conditioner. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

I agree that the smells are different, but I find the consistency and smell of both unpleasant. I didn’t get the impression that either “nourished” my tack, but then again, my tack is typically well cared for and probably doesn’t need that type of condition. Both left a greasy residue/dull sheen that collected dust/dirt.
