Best Pony Halters?

Are the best pony halters the same brands as the horse halters typically recommended? One inch seems really clunky on a petite pony head and from the websites (Quillin, Perri’s Walsh, Tack Shack) I cant see any 3/4" options. Are there companies that specialize in high quality pony halters?

In a perfect world I’d love a black halter but would settle for brown as I understand I’m more likely to find a hunter-oriented option.

Quillin makes a 3/4"…call them and they will make anything in custom sizes!

Walsh makes a 3/4". They call it the “Showman” model. I had this for my Arab and it was perfect for a refined head.

ETA - they will do it in black as a special order.

I had a nice Walsh in cob sized that was 3/4". I bought it used. It was nice on my OTTB petite head.

I have a beautiful 3/4" Walsh cob, the horse it belonged to passed away 11 years ago. I just came across it while cleaning the basement, it was a mess but once I wiped it off it looked beautiful, so soft and supple. I am a huge fan of Walsh halters, I have had Quillin too which are very nice but I like Walsh even better.

Many of the Walsh halters also come in small pony and medium pony sizes, since OP didn’t specify how big the pony is. Just look on their website, each halter has a drop down menu for sizes.

Another vote for Walsh! I had a beautiful pony sized one for my dainty headed Connie/TB cross. They definitely have what you’re looking for, and it comes with or without an adjustable noseband, depending on the style you order.

Any chance you have a photo you’d be willing to share?

What’s his breeding?

@Ghazzu

He’s Al Marah bred, so heavy Crabbet. AM Power Raid x Bo Xana/AM Sea Captain.

Freedman’s ~ Ky. & Canada ~ pony size.

R.E.Fennell’s ~ Lexington … yearling and weanling sizes work for Hackney ponies ~

Both companies make brown, and black pony halters in 3/4 - double stitched - brass name plates can be added ~

I highly recommend the Fennell’s products ~ nicer people IMHO ~

Not sure how big your pony is, but Quillin’s weanling size halter fits my 13hh medium WelshX great. Haven’t measured but it’s definitely thinner than their regular width halters. Looks nice and is heavy duty - should last for years.

Nice!

Thanks everyone!

She’s 14.2 and an assumed WelshX. She can squeak by in some bridles in a cob with everything on the highest or near highest hole.

I bought her a cob leather turnout halter from Schneider and she’s the tightest option on the nose and crown but it is still sloppy looking.

My current top contenders:

https://walshproducts.com/collections/halters/products/showman-halter-4700
https://quillin.com/sale-halter/ - would need to call and better understand how to order a 3/4"

It looks like there’s about a $60 gap between the cheapest option, Quillin, and most expensive option, Walsh. From anyone who has owned both, is Walsh worth the $60 difference? She has snapped a halter in her first 6 months with me so I’m embracing the reality that anything purchased may need to be replaced

@GreyDes Just going off of pictures I’m guessing my mare is pretty similar to your handsome boy but she’s smaller through the jaw. His eyes and expression are swoon-worthy!

@PonyLove222 Would you say that your 13h pony is comfortably in the halter or are you dropped down to the lowest holes? She’s fairly refined through the head so perhaps that size could work for her.

@Zuzu Thank you, I’m definitely going to pick this up as a spare halter for traveling. The quality looks really remarkable for the price point https://freedmanharness.com/collections/stable-halters/products/5-8-adjustable-chin-halter-weanling

I had Walsh and Quillin during the same time period and preferred the way the Walsh stood up to wear and tear while continuing to look beautiful when cleaned but Quillin is certainly an excellent product. Either would be a good choice, I don’t have any personal experience with Fennells.

Hopefully this link will work. If it doesn’t, I’ll find another way to send it to you.

@GraceLikeRain Thank you! He’s 14.2, and generally wears a pony sized bridle with a cob browband. FYI that Walsh has an option with an adjustable chin, which is helpful for refined heads. This is actually the model on my Arab in the photos - https://walshproducts.com/collection…an-halter-6700

My Walsh halters have lasted for years with minimal care. I haven’t had the other brands, so can’t speak to them personally.

Big Dee’s has a 3/4 inch in black and I love it, I just ordered 2 more!

its Quiet Creek .75 halter at Big Dee’s and its under $50

Walsh for sure.
