Long time ago, there was a horse called Fog Duckin’, and I remember the call to this day: “Here they come, down the stretch, and it’s FOG DUCKIN coming up the outside. It’s Fog Duckin passing them all (insert top 4 babble here) AND IT’S…well you can figure out the spoonerism that was used… Well, there was dead air for a good 30 seconds and you could hear as the announcer asked someone in the background ‘Did I say what I think I said’ and an anonymous voice said 'YUP” and a muffled ‘Oh shit’ was heard. He did regain enough composure to give the prices and rundown but was rather subdued for the rest of the card.
At roughly the same time there was another called Fog Ducker. A friend of mine was anouncing a race and made the same spoonerism. He said he had never been so embarassed in his whole life as he was when he heard the replay. When he told me that story he made comments about people naming horses such things as Fog Duckin, Fog Ducker and Norfolk And Way (who I had contemplated purchasing)
Wellllll, there’s always the Hoof Hearted thing…and another that I simply can’t recall, but the caller was avoiding the horse’s name because he could not say it without being non-PG. I think the race was run in fog. And it was very, very funny. Yeah, I know, not much to go on, but it was classic (I forget jokes, too).
And, btw, there was a horse that landed at Finger Lakes last year named Don’ttellmywife. Wouldn’t it be fun if they had the same condition and would meet in the same heat?
They showed the stretch call on our local news at six.
Haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.
Priceless!
I wonder who at the JC was asleep at the switch with Fog Duckin and Fog Ducker…you cannot not know what’s likely to happen.
Sure you can!
You know EXACTLY what is going to happen…
I don’t know about Fog Ducker beyond he was a running horse but what breed I don’t know. I did watch Fog Ducking race and in that case was someone at the then Canadian Standardbred Horse Society. Back then, I don’t think they were quite as strict either or at least were more naive; further, his name makes no sense with his breeding. Both incidents were in the early 80s
Came on here to post the same. Every once in awhile I am blessed to put on TVG and leave it on all day… and you get rewarded with fantastic racing moments! Today was one as I heard the call live… and you are right, you can’t write this stuff.
I am sure it will make the rounds of the “mainstream media” - as it should. Priceless!
LOL!
DRJ - me too! I just came in from barn and was in the kitchen - I had the racing channel on in the livingroom. The stretch call got my attention (as in, no way) but I completely missed watching the race.
Harvest Moon - thank you so much for posting link - it wasn’t on my calracing.
PS - I also love the MNR announcer race calls, especially when every once in awhile he says that a horse who starts loosing ground “has put the cue in the rack”.
Favorite standardbred racing name:
Sofa King Fast
There was a horse a couple years ago at Philly Park named SOFACANFAST.
Now the announcer Keith Jones got the program the day and called the stewards and said there is NO WAY this horse can run because I can’t say his name Fast… Sooo, needless to say they all said the name fast and the horse was ordered scratched and couldn’t run until it was renamed- They renamed it Numerous Coins…
Then there was the filly : Flat Fleet Feet.
She was a rather speedy 2 year old. I suspect that she was purchased by a consortuim of track announcers and retired…
I think in cases like that, the announcer should be allowed to abbreviate.
Just say “the six horse” or whatever. (And REALLY, JC? Do your checkers not say these things aloud? You cannot say “Sofacanfast” in any way that doesn’t sound bad unless you say it glacially slowly.)
And the 7th at Monmouth was on Fox and Friends this morning–the next segment was with money guy Dave Ramsey and when they threw to him, he opened with a somber “My wife knows everything.”
Really, the only way that race would be better is if you had Onoitsmymothernlaw coming on strong for show.
Fred needed to be there.
It Wasn’t Me … should I change his barn name to Tiger?
He ships to his trainer/new owner in October.
Soon…
Loved that race!
The Monmouth - Larry Collmus (who is much under appreciated) called race was also part of The Today Show with the teaser at the opening of the program and then part of their relaxed banter. See below for video
I agree about all they needed further was the NY-based runner of Onoitsmymothernlaw somewhere in the mix.
another vote for Larry Collmus
He is such an excellent announcer, does not drag out each call with fillers…knows where every horse is and gives more information than the average race caller.
On my local news too. And, of course they had to mention that Collmus is a bachelor!
