Best tall boots for eventing?

Hi all,

I am casually browsing for some new tall boots. I don’t really need said boots but I my current boots do rub behind the knee after extended wear, like at shows. I am hard to fit off the rack but I don’t want to shell out the dough for customs.

I am 5 foot with a size six foot. Regular height is almost always too tall. I need like a 16-17 inch height. Regular calf is usually ok.

Also is which is a better investment, field boots or dress boots? I know it really doesn’t matter that much but if I can keep wearing these for a long time even at the upper levels it would be a better use of my money.

I’ve seen a lot if people wearing the tredsteps which seem to be an affordable option. I like the look of the ariat volant s boots with the snake skin tops but that’s purely asthetic. They’re also sneaker feet so I dunno how that would look in the show ring.

Any input is welcome and thanks in advance.

Volants are very common for showing in the eventing world, and very accepted.

Re: dress or field, if you’re only going to have one or the other, probably field. Most traditional dress boots are too stiff for jumping in my opinion, especially on xc when your stirrups are shorter.

The Volants are the exception to the rule. Easier to clean than field boots too–no laces.

Look into the new Signature line from Devon-Aire. Their Granada field boot is made in Europe (unlike Tredstep or Ariat, which are made in India and China) of Italian calfskin. Very reasonably priced around $450.

As far as style, get what’s comfortable. A true stiff dressage boot won’t function well for jumping, but I have a pair of soft dress boots by Rectiligne. I’m only 5’1 but have wide calves and they fit me like custom.

The mountain horse boots have a small foot and I believe offer a short height.

In regards to dress vs field I meant more of whether or not to have laces. Dressage boots I won’t be able to ride in for all phases which is what I want. I also like the look or the Mountain Horse Sovereign tall boots in black. Thoughts?

Really, get what fits/is comfortable and is in your budget. That’s what really matters.

The laces or not are solely personal preference. My personal preference is not laces - one less thing to break and easier to clean. You can get boots that are stiff or soft in either style. The judge isn’t going to care if your boots are dress or field.

Then get the mountain horse sovereigns in black.

I’m 5’2" and was wearing stove-pipe stiff but gorgeous Ariats which are now collecting dust in my closet after purchasing a pair of the Tuffrider Wellesley tall boots from State Line Tack. They fit like butter; I can wear them all day and they don’t rub. Have even walked a cross country course in them when my Ariats would have rubbed my heels bloody. They come in slims, regular and wide and are very attractive boots which look like Parlantis.

check out Deniro. not super cheap but way less than full customs, easy break in, and tons of “off the rack” sizes if you find the right supper that stocks them here in the USA.

i have a pair of Quick Soft DeNiro tall boots and i love them and event in them. i got the dress version and they are perfect for all three phases. it took a while to receive them as they are all semi-custom (i’d guess you’d say - i was measured for them and then they were made in to the “stock” sizes closest to what i needed for footbed, calf and height).

i ordered mine through our local tack store and they were $400. i just did a google search and found these at a lower price but it looks to be limited to what stock they have on hand: http://www.paradisefarmandtack.com/deniro-quick-soft-field-boot/

I just bought these(Welleslys) last night after mucho research. My current mountain horse Firenze are falling apart and I’ve already had to replace the zipper twice on my 1st pair, which is a P.I.T.A. Plus they never fit me right either and rubbed when course walking. I’m SO PYSCHED for these Wellesleys!!! Riding warehouse has a major sale on them right now: http://www.ridingwarehouse.com/TuffRider_Wellesley_Tall_Womens_Boots/descpage-TRWTB.html OP take note, I’m a size 6 as well & they are even cheaper,$150!!! Wut!

That’s a GREAT price on these boots! A group of us went in together and bought a pair of these for our coach for Christmast as she really liked mine, and I think they were $230 via State Line Tack and I even lobbied for a discount which State Line refused stating the price was set by the vendor and therefore excluded from their 20% discount offering.

I am also 5’ and wear a 5.5 or 6 boot. I have the Volante S and the Tredsteps. The Volante is a taller boot. That lovely snakeskin is plastic–and not very forgiving. Those boots may be shedding their snakeskin soon! The Tredsteps are really great boots. I have the dress Donatello’s and they are not as tall as the Volante but do fit me better. And they have a really nice grip to them. Buy two pair of the Tredsteps–save one to show in, one to ride in.

That’s good to know about the “snakeskin.” My Volants are the plain model and I had looked at those with envy . . . . no more.

I have a pair of the Tredstep Donatellos. Super affordable, and comfortable.

I didn’t think about that with the volants. Thank you!

I love the Tredstep Da Vinci boots. They have them in dress or field versions. No break in time, but they’re not so soft and socklike that they break down quickly. Got a great deal off Ebay!

Just wanted to mention that the Volant’s have oiled leather on the side of the boot that is against the saddle; it is very grippy!!!

I have a pair of Tuff Rider Baroque Field Boots and I love them! I will have had them for 3 years this month and they still look great. They were easy to break in and clean up really well. Definitely recommend them!
