You might want to see if you can find a farmer who can loosen the soil on a deeper layer (I don’t think the chances are creat though.) But that is the only measure to really rid yourselves of the buttercups.
When I lived in Western Washington I asked the county extension agent what to do about buttercup. His answer? … “Move”.
What did seem to help was spreading fireplace ash in the area and frequent mowing. Didn’t get rid of it, but beat it back sufficiently!

I live in Georgia. Here, WalMart carries a product called Eliminator that you apply with a sprayer (like RoundUp). It is far less expensive than RoundUp. During the spring and summer months, one application lasts about 60 days.
