Beware Eclipse Trailers

I searched for an old post on another BB that shall not be mentioined, but it’s an equestrian town. I was going to copy my post here for you because it is lengthy, but when I searched, the post was not to be found. I had saved a link to the post and the link did not work. There were over 7 pages of discussion on said post and other people stepping forward with their complaints about Eclipse Trailers.

The reason the topic can’t be found? Eclipse asked the BB to delete the thread and they did because Eclipse had been a prior sponsor.

I was on that BB when I saw the ad for the 2H Eclipse brand new trailers for $6995. I researched it and not finding anything negative I forwarded the information to my mother and sister in law, who was shopping for a trailer (SIL). They purchased the trailer and with shipping and other fees were about $8500 spent.

When the trailer arrived it was in terrible condition. The frame was off center with the trailer. The welds were all subpar and had sharp edges. There was a problem with the drop down window.

Both Eclipse and the dealer were contacted and they were told to take it to a trailer place, who informed them of the severe structural issues on the brand new trailer.

Eclipse stopped returning calls and have never, not one time, offered to fix this trailer that has a warranty. The dealer washed his hands of it stating the trailer was covered by Eclipse and their warranty.

The trailer was delivered in the spring and has never been used. She is in the Army and needed the trailer to move her horse as she is moved around, not to mention being able to enjoy her horse by hauling out or haul to the vet.

On that same thread that was deleted, others stepped forward with their same problems. Eclipse ignores these problems, refusing to take calls or return them.

As for my family, they are still in legal negotiations.

As for the other BB deleting the thread at the request of Eclipse (which I find it hilarious that Eclipse has the time to search the internet for bad press and demand it be removed, but they can’t fix their shoddy product) it ticks me off that this equestrian town will advertise this BELOW sub par trailer company and when their own members get burned they stand behind their advertiser.

The reason I never found out negative about Eclipse? They prowl the internet and have it deleted.

If you’ve had a similar experience, please do let us know.

I was just looking at their site earlier this evening looking to upgrade my 2008 Eclipse 2 horse slant to their new 8 foot wide model for my new horse. I have had no issues with my current trailer and quite like it, enough to use them again.

I am sorry to hear about your family’s troubles with them and I do hope it is an isolated incident. I never had to contact their “customer service” but am concerned after reading your story.

It actually is not an isolated incident. After much discussion on the other board the old threads were re-instated. There are multiple people with problems that Eclipse has been hiding. The customer service is bad if you have any problems. If you are looking to purchase, it sounds like they have great customer service. If you have a problem with your trailer, there is NO customer service.

Also, do check the BBB, Eclipse has an “F” rating with the BBB and BBB does not support Eclipse.

From what I am finding it appears Eclipse started off right, but has seriously declined in many avenues.

Interesting! I just entered a drawing for a free Eclipse trailer. (Darn, I was really planning to win it until I heard this bad news! ;))

if you have my sort of karma, now you will win it!

Thanks for your story…I was somewhat looking at Eclipse trailers, but was never really sure. I can say that the smallest slant load is recommended by the company to be able to hold a 15.1 hose, but then saw the COTH thread about the woman with a 14.1 pony and it was squished in the stall, butt on one wall and neck had to be turned to fit in stall, so she called the company and they are selling her the larger one.

But what a misrepresentation!!! A dealer near me, told me he would not sell the smallest slant load, which is the $6995 model unless I had a 13.2 pony or smaller. I didn’t believe him then, and thought he was just telling me that to sell me a higher-priced model, which he could have been doing. But based on the woman with the 14.1 pony, now I think I believe him!

Hmmmm, makes you wonder about this company!

Thanks for the information. I missed the farm show but, was planning to go to the Horse Expo next month and see if I could get a show special price on the same eclipse that the OP is talking about. Guess that is not going to happen. Back to trailer shopping.

wow, glad I read this! I was on a website, one which they adverstised on, and I considered purchasing one. They seemed somewhat gimmicky…but this thread has helped me make up my mind! Thanks

Problems with Eclipse trailer

We had 3 problems with our Eclipse trailer right after buying it. Unfortunately, we had immediately moved out of state and couldn’t take it back to the dealer. Problem 1: the nuts holding the door handles had not been properly secured in place and they came very loose. Problem 2: the “pin” at the end of the padded chest bar simply fell out just as we were about to use it for the first time and Problem 3: this was the most serious, the apparatus which secures the center post that holds the horse separator in place slipped and the separator fell over!!! Fortunately, the horse wasn’t on the trailer and no one was hurt. I did write to Eclipse and they offered to pay for repairs but my husband and friend had gone ahead and repaired them so we had no receipts. Eclipse has not responded back since then. This was all about shoddy workmanship and I am not a happy customer.

What kind of a trailer? Eclipse? Been hauling 100,000 miles per year for 30 years and have NEVER heard of them!!!

I guess you get what you pay for…

While directing the actions of any business is immensely challenging, there is perhaps no business model more demanding than that of the family-owned small business. Eclipse Aluminum Trailers is one such family-owned business, and the challenges we have faced since our foundation are exactly what one might expect. Although growth is the goal of any organization, it brings with it a need to constantly learn, improve, and develop. Over these past few years, Eclipse has not only experienced an amazingly fast rate of growth, but also many opportunities to learn from our experiences.

We have made many great decisions to propel our company forward, yet we have also faced mistakes that we have been fortunate to learn from. Regardless of how difficult a situation might be, we stick to our core values and reframe problems as challenges, and then work hard to match these challenges with solutions. The unfortunate reality, however, is that not every situation offers the outcome you hope it will; whether you are an individual or a family-owned small business. The events described in this thread perfectly reflect this reality for Eclipse, as sadly, we were clearly unable to deliver the satisfaction that we demand be given to each and every one of our customers.

There is no merit to any company engaging in a debate or argument in a public forum such as this. We have remained silent as this thread grew, but now feel that this response has been warranted to clear any misconceptions you might have as a reader.

When we became aware of an issue with this trailer, we immediately supported it being taken for an inspection and that all necessary adjustments should be made.

Once legal action was ongoing between the customer and the actual dealer, Eclipse was no longer able to comment on or be involved in the situation.

As we understood it, the customer not only received a complete refund for the purchase, but also maintained possession of the trailer.

We are no longer engaged in business with the dealer involved with this matter.

Posting in a forum such as this can often be seen as an attempt to perpetuate debate. This is by no means our intent. Again, we felt that some sort of response was necessary to “clear the air,” but not to simply argue. The difficulty of accomplishing this is further complicated by the simple fact that the author of this thread is not a customer of Eclipse Aluminum Trailers. While we appreciate the support the author is lending to a family member, we must focus our time and effort on the needs of our trailer owners. Nonetheless, we would gladly discuss this matter as much as the actual owner would like. Given our understanding that a full refund was issued, however, we were and are not surprised to have not heard back from this individual.

Our mission has always been to manufacture a trailer that the “every day” horse owner can afford, with a value that cannot be matched by our competitors. With an Eclipse Aluminum Trailer you truly do get what you pay for…Extra value. And you do not pay for things you do not get, like the large overhead that big corporations have. We do not employ a vast legal team, and we do not have to include the cost of the 50-100 ongoing lawsuits in our trailer prices that most large companies are involved in. We do not believe that this should be just “the cost of doing business.” We also refuse to follow the industry pattern of raising prices until the products become unaffordable for the average horse owner, or gradually taking materials and value away while charging more for a lesser product. Eclipse Aluminum Trailer prices have remained the same since our foundation. As the cost of our materials and production increases, we continue to absorb these costs and adhere to our vision of delivering a high-quality trailer to the public we so strongly support. By continuing this trend, the value we offer is constantly on the rise. While this approach runs contrary to the beliefs of our competitors, we are committed to these principles as an expression of what we value. In short, we are real horse people working to improve an industry that has all but forgotten about the typical horse owner.

We handle each customer personally, and we work every day to improve the ways in which we are able provide solutions to the challenges we face. As we continue to grow, we will continue to learn from both our mistakes and our successes. We will not, however, abandon our core values of delivering an unmatched value with the highest possible attention to customer care.

We encourage any Eclipse Aluminum Trailer owner or interested buyer to contact our Director of Customer Care and Quality Control if you have any questions or concerns. As a family-owned business that is dedicated to delivering value, you will not be speaking with an out-of-touch employee that is paid to shuffle you around. Instead, you will be in direct contact with one of our owners. You can reach Dan at 614-496-1547 ext. 102, or by email at customerservice@eclipsealuminumtrailers.com

Thank you for reading, understanding, and caring enough about the world to be involved with this matter. We hope that you have more knowledge of our company and what we stand for, and that anyone interested will contact us directly to address the concerns you might have. We ask that you put us to the test. Show us where we need improve, and we will show you the many areas we have improved. We stand by our value. We stand by our product. We stand by our customer.

I love my Eclipse trailer. I have had no problems with it, knock on wood. I feel it was a good buy for the money. It is 4 going on 5 years old.

I have an Eclipse trailer (2009 I think) that I haven’t had any major trouble with from a manufacturing standpoint. For the most part everything works well. No trailers are perfect and I’d expect any of them to have some characteristics that I don’t care for.

Pro’s:
*roomy
*light to tow
*Easy to take out center partition
*large tack room
*affordable

Cons:
*aluminum pins for butt and chest bars are thin- my one butt bar was either bent a little when I bought it new or the pin was bent because it was very hard to get the one butt bar fastened from day one
*big gap between end of trailer and ramp- some horses are afraid to step down and they could catch a shoe on the lip in my opinion
*only one escape door- very dangerous- ask me how I know
*with a swinging divider between the tack room and horse area, pee can run into the tack room if the trailer is parked slightly downhill
*if you want to swing the dividing door open towards the tack room, there is nowhere to clip the door to hold it still
*I’m 5’10 and the bridle hooks are too high for me to reach over the saddles easily
*There was a recall on my trailer that I wasn’t informed of until I happened to bring the trailer to the dealer for service
*The trailer doesn’t come with a manual (?!?)-it seems a very expensive item to have no manual/spec sheet

I have the warmblood style 2h with dressing room. It was advertised as being great for shipping a mare and foal. This is the not the case as the escape door could very easily be opened from the inside by little lips on the handle and the door lock is not really secure enough for this type of use in my opinion.

Another small note is that the new butt and shoulder bar release systems are interesting, but I feel that the part where the butt bar hooks into the center divider is very sharp and a horse backing up against it could easily rip skin off. The edges should be rounded or coated in rubber.

Update:

I was asked by my sister, the owner of said trailer, to let you all know that Eclipse has purchased back their trailer. They did in fact make an offer to work with us back in February when the missing thread was made live again and brought to the public’s awareness. At that time the owners of the trailer were waiting on a refund through the credit card company from the trailer dealer, Price’s Trailer Sales in MI. Due to this they were unable to take any other compensation until a decision was made by the credit card company.

Once it was determined that the refund would not take place from the dealer, Eclipse did follow through and pick up the trailer and deliver a check.

I have been asked to post that Eclipse does not prowl the internet looking to have bad press removed.

I am glad that this issue was finally resolved a year later. I am dissapointed that this happened at all. I was able to view a very nice Eclipse trailer when some people purchased a mare from me. This trailer, however, was a custom job for minis so it was built by Eclipse themselves and not farmed out to another manufacturer.

The change of heart is almost like they threatened to sue you for slander :wink:

I for one am glad poeple bring up this information for public debate so the rest of us know.

ps never heard of the brand .

They did not threaten to sue us. If so it would not have held water as I only told a true story to the public. They did, in the end, make it right. For that I thank them.

I am not familiar with this brand first hand, but when companies spew forth verbose and “generic” self defenses, it always raises a red flag for me personally. That’s just me.

I also prefer longevity in a manufacturer, Eclipes does not have this. While it’s not an indicator of QUALITY, at least you can hope they will still be around if you have a problem 3-5 years from now, and that they might be around to honor warranties.

When purchasing, I also look for the warranty period, which really reflects the company’s confidence in its own product to hold up to the test of time and “wear and tear.” 3 years, Eclipse’s warranty, does not stand up to the 5 to 7 year warranty offered by other higher quality trailer mftrs.

Also, I look at their website, and look for CONSTRUCTION details. Thickness of alumuinum in walls, spacing of cross bars, thickness of cross bars, etc. When a company only offers “features” of their trailers ("accessories, if you will) then I get worried.

Finally, an F rating by the BBB… would not encourage me to patronize the manufacturer.

One more point, when BUYING, it’s wise to consider potential RESALE value. If this trailer has this reputation, what are your resale options? Other than to a metal scrap dealer, that is?

I chose a C&C and would so again a 1,000x over … but that one is no longer made (going back to the “longevity” issue) … Here is the kind of information I look for, however, when purchasing …

http://www.kiefermfg.com/thekieferadvantage.htm

Eclipse and the newer clone, ‘Twilight’ came about due to the economy crapping like it did. They were built strictly for price point. And in fact, many people shop using that as a strict criteria.

The fact is, most of the uber cheap new trailers like these are not built for the long haul. And often aren’t what the buyer expects at all. Some of the common complaints have been small sized trailers, cheap welds, interior panels that can and do come loose easily, sharp edges, you name it.

But really; if you are pricing new aluminum skinned trailers from major manufactuers, say a two horse bp, and all of the majors are running 10k and up, how in the world do you expect a sub 7k trailer to be as good or BETTER built?
The simple answer is they can’t.

They all use the same materials. They all have overhead in labor. They all face the same expenses. Don’t believe the horse hockey that they can trim 3k or more off a trailer because they don’t have a national advertising budget. I can see it trimming a little bit off, but not 3k or more. That simply doesn’t add up.

If you want inexpensive, only use a trailer lightly, and don’t plan on having it for years, then these kinds of trailers are for you.

If you want quality, and longevity, you are better served buying a decent used trailer of a better brand than a new one of a cheap brand.
