Very cool! Perfect for everyone who loves the adjustability of buckles but would like more convenience. Thanks for posting the video!
I am seriously wigged our that the disc front relies completely on single-layer Velcro to keep it fastened (not the super-secure double Velcro sandwich like the old style Rambo hoods attached to the blanket with). There is not any metal hardware at all. I only say that, as in my experience, daily fastening and unfastening of Velcro wears it out, as evidenced by a plethora of hoods that were long outlived by the original blanket I purchased them to go with. Time will tell, but I’m skeptical.
Totally. I was accidentally sent a disc-front blanket instead of the one that I ordered, and had a moment of panic thinking that Horseware had moved from V-front to disc for all their products. I’m not ready to trust a single velcro layer and relatively thin plastic piece as the blanket closures that bear the most stress and come in contact with other objects (e.g. feeders) the most often.
Not to mention that having worked in a barn and done blanket changes for many horses, the thing that I found to be the most fiddly and annoying was feeding velcro through slots (as some neck cover single-velcro closures require), especially if there’s any fraying on the velcro strap. I find it no better than traditional buckle straps. I think there are probably better ways to add some adjustability to the V-front concept…
I liked the T hooks better. I’m too lazy to undo all the front fasteners on my Rambos these days. I just pull them over the head.
yes i hadnt seen the disc in person so wasnt sure what to think of it yet. I personally prefer the v-front snaps, though i have no beef with the t hooks either. But I like the additional velcro closures on the v-fronts, just seems more secure. if I have big bulky gloves on I often just wont do the 2nd velcro since you have to feed it through, but the big overlapping square is pretty easy to just squish together. n but honestly, as long as its a Horseware Im usually ok with the blanket! My horses dont wear anything else.
Me too. I love my Horseware Ireland blankets for their quality and fit, but really prefer the adjustable front closure system on my old Riders International blankets.
Plus, both the T-closures and the V style snaps can dig into the horse’s chest/neck if they have atypical conformation.
The V front Rambos rub one of my horses but I use a Bossy bib and add an extra loop of large cable tie…I snap the top V to the regular ring and the bottom to the cable tie loop. Fixes it. I saw pics of a barn that did this, maybe Cian O’Connor? That gave me the idea. It helps the rubbing. The rambo wugs fit great on my WB/QHs but less well on my TBs. I switched the TBs to the Supremes mostly and they fit a lot better.
horses can be rough on anything. I went out to a naked filly the other day…she snapped both clips and wiggled out of her Rambo Wug. Oops! But I can just add some other clips to what is left luckily. Horses!
am I the only one who takes blankets over the head most of the time? So much faster and they don’t mind once they get the idea. I do it upside down so only the skinny part goes over the head, then I rotate it to put the large part on their backs. Easy and fast. I wouldn’t if a horse found it upsetting but no one here is bothered.
I am clearly one of the weird ones on this topic.
I was so excited to get my first clip front blanket. Something I had always wanted.
Maybe it is just my pony makes it difficult but I prefer the buckles. Undoing and redoing the clips seems to be a fight.
The video of the velcro and plastic front closure would be a no way for me. Threading velcro thru a slot while wearing mittens/gloves would be way too frustrating.
Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone else have problems with the closures of either style of Rambos being easily ripped off? My gelding rips them off within minutes - he doesn’t mess (as much or with the same degree of success) with any other blanket brand front closures. I currently have 4 unusable Rambos in a pile because they have no front closures.
I think part of it is that the Rambos are just cut so well - that’s why they don’t usually need leg straps. There’s a FB group for selling/buying used Horseware blankets and I’ve alsof ou
I have a Centaur high neck light weight that I use occasionally and have had Schneider’s and Weatherbeeta. All of those end up with either a fold/crease in the high neck or the point of the neck will actually fold under. My Rambo Wugs never do that.
@awaywego is he ripping the Rambo models or Amigo/Rhino? I’d contact Horseware and see what they say. I’d also put a very snug tail strap on the blanket so he can’t pull the chest forward.
I have a blanket destroyer that likes to play with the front of his blankets. I’ll spray the fabric with a bit of Rap Last if I see evidence of gnawing on the blankets.
I am finding the Kodiak blankets with adjustable front buckles AND easy-to-use-one-handed snaps The.BEST. Adjust buckle once, then just snap to put on.
Zoom in - the navy/silver on the cantering horse - to see what I mean:
I am a Hater of T-clasps on surcingles
In freezing weather you need to take gloves off to manipulate them,
Hate.
Hate.
HATE! :disgust:
Who uses something other than tlocks on surcingles? Kensington has clips. Does anyone else? I always liked the Kensington blankets but have gone 100% to Rambo now for the v front with the clips.
I have a blanket with the disc closures. They seem plenty strong but my BM hates them. I don’t particularly like them. They are harder to get undone than I expected. They have to be in the exact right orientation or something. Sometimes they are easy but most times I need to fiddle with them too much. I would not get one with the disc closures again.
I prefer the adjustable buckles with the clips and the choice of 2 rings and one layer of velcro where the blanket overlaps. I thinks that has the most versatility for sizing but is still easy to quickly take on/off.
For the Rambo I like the V connect well enough but the two separate velcro connections in the front is excessive. I think that is fine if you are only changing one or two blankets per day but to have 8-10 to take on/off for turn-out/in is a pain. We mostly do the one velcro closure and ignore the other one.
The T clasps are fine until they get bent. I have one blanket that has nice heavy clips on both sides of the surcingle. They are similar to the clips on many legs straps but a little beefier. I really like that for the surcingles. I wish more blankets had those instead of the T clips.
Literally anything other than traditional buckles are ideal.
My pony and a boarder have Mio blankets that use the same “t-snap” as the belly straps use. Love it.
My Weatherbeeta Genero blankets and a boarder’s Weatherbeeta blankets have snaps like bolt snaps. Love it.
My old blankets and the rest of my boarders have traditional pull through buckles like a belt. Bane of my existence.
Yep, guessing you’re describing a Kensington. They’re the only one I know that does that. Curious if anyone else does. Seems like a good idea.
I like the look. I would love the ease of use. I would love the ease of replacement (because I have a blanket waiting to have a surcingle sewn back on right now).
What worries me might be because of my specific critter(s).
When itchy (or when they are bored or when they want me to worry about them or… ) they rub along walls and anything that is rub-able. Those large D-rings and clips seem like a snag risk to me.
Actually it is a Professional Choice. I bought it a few years ago and have not seen them since. It has held up well. It is still waterproof. I have one dart on the butt that needs to be restitched.
My guy has been in both a 3 rail split rail field, 2 different stall set ups and no climb fencing with a top board with no issues. I do make sure I clip all clips so the open part is towards the blanket. The Ds have not gotten snagged on anything.
At one farm he was at he got a chest clip on another blanket stuck to a mesh gate since the BO was not careful about how she clipped the closures. She was after that. Thankfully he wasn’t the type to panic. Her fancy show pony would have paniced and hurt himself.
I personally love the V front closures. The Wug blankers are my favorite style as I feel that they conform to the horse’s shoulders and chest better than the regular t-style closures. My older gelding loves his Rhino Wug blanket. If Amigo had a warranty on their blankets, I would purchase their Wug blankets for both of my horses. Sadly, my youngster has been a tornado and seems to give blankets a run for their money durability wise.
