I have seen this discussed here but in a search could not find anything.
My horse has been blanketed since early November and this week I am noticing shoulder rubs. She wears Horseware turnouts…different ones…Rambo, Rhino and Amigo Bravo. The fit seems good. Does anyone have suggestions. Other blankets have those big pleats over the shoulders…do they help? Maybe I should try a salve?
You can try those slinky thingies that go over the head and over the shoulders, commonly called a bra. But my horse is white and clipped and she still has rubs. Her blanket is silky lined too, and hs shoulder pleats, but she’s big shouldered and the pleat is not high enough. The rub shows because her black skin shows through. I just wait until it is time to take the blanket off and it grows over very fast with the new coat coming in.
Second vote for the Bossy Bib…have used them for several years and have no blanket rubs.
I sell the Bossys Bibs in North America. The last thing on earth you want to do is put any salve or ointment on the rub. The rubs occur because the horse moves and the blanket doesn’t. The hair fibres are the point of least resistance and as a result, they break off again and again until you are down to raw skin
The lycra based “stretchy” products do the same thing - they stay put and don’t move because you have stretched and strapped them into place and they are wonderful for keeping braids intact overnight for a show but I would never use them for longer than that
The Bossys Bibs “free float” underneath the blankets. They trap a microscopic layer of air between them and the horses coat and between them and the blanket so as the horse moves, so does the Bossys Bib and there are no areas of constriction, no pressure point build up and no rubs and if there are existing rubs when you put them on, they will heal them up and allow hair to grow - but no salves or it just gunks everything up and doesn’t allow the BB to move as its been designed to do …
Bossy Bib is the best, according to people who have horses with shoulder rubs around here. I think that is the name of the bib.???
Obviously others had success, but I bought a Bossy Bib this year, used it daily, and she still has rubs. She wears alternating Rhinos and a Rambo, none with pleats.
I just ordered the uber expensive Optimo Rambo with the deep, high pleats. The liners also have the pleats. I already have one of the Optimo shells and it is impossible for her shoulders to be rubbed on it as it is so loose and generous over the shoulders. I hope the extra liner I ordered for it is as generous.
Two of my horses got bad shoulder rubs last year in their various Rambo blankets. I ordered the Bossy Bibs and their shoulders are perfect right now. It is one of those products that really works for my horses.
Also, try adding a cable tie to the metal loop, making another loop approx. the same size, in the front if you have the V system blankets. I hook the top clip to the loop and the bottom clip to the cable tie loop. This seems to create a little extra room in the shoulders. I saw it in pictures from some top rider’s stables (Cian O’Connor maybe?) tried it and it really seems to help.

Bossy bib.
A distributor in Canada sells them. Well worth it.[/QUOTE]
This. Worth every penny.
True Colours Farm (poster above) is where I got mine from. Great customer service and fast shipping even though it came from Canada. It didn’t take long to see how well the product works!
Bossy bibs! Totally worth it. Costly to start but last for ever wit minimal care.
Nothing helped my mare until I switched to a HUG blanket. Zero issues now…
Awesome, just ordered a Bossy Bib! I have a slinky-type bra but my old man would get rubs from the edge of that instead of on his shoulder. I’m not blanketing anymore this winter since they’re fuzzy but I’d like to have it on-hand for the next time I clip and need to blanket.
Why is the Bossy Bib so much more expensive here than in England?
^^^ The prices on the UK website are in GBP and not dollars.
Its a common problem where people see the amount and just think its in dollars and its not … Once you convert it into dollars, add in the 8% duty and the 5% GST we pay and the shipping costs, then the pricing makes sense
Thank you for your phone call and your order!
I have this problem with two of my horses. This year I have sprayed their “rub areas” with show sheen from the beginning of blanket season. So far no rubs.
I just want to add that the Bossy Bib is beautifully made. It fits well, is durable and very slippery. From the posts here, it is obvious that I just have a very delicate little flower – lucky me.
I have the bossy bib and it has worked well. My fellow boarder was about to replace hers and found a Shires (I think) version of it for about $14. She and some others just bought those and like them so far. Otherwise I got mine from True Colours!
Bossy Bibs are miracles. I put off buying one for years because I thought there was no way it was that different than a sleazy but it really is magic.
Well, probably not what you are looking for, but for my retired horse, I just paste on a small strip of Gorilla tape on those rub areas. Directly onto his fur. I know, I know, it sounds strange, but it is functional.
It doesn’t seem to bother him, and by spring time, the tape has worn itself off, or even gotten shed off. Again, if appearance is of no matter, this can be a high-functioning, zero-dollar solution.
(Now, if anyone has a good reason I should not do this, please lemme know…)
