Blanketing - how do you attach the leg straps?

Around each leg? Crisscross? And why do you hook them that way?

Twist and goes back to the same leg. If you criss cross, there seems to be a tendency for a blanket slip=wedgie issue. If they go just to the same side, there seems to be a blanket slip and fall off issue. If I twist them around each other and back to the same leg, it seems the most stable.

Of course, a well fitting blanket will also alleviate some of the above issue, but I still put them on the same.

Ahhhhh… I was taught to crisscross and that has worked fine, until this horse. He is so narrow the blanket slips and he gets a “wedgie”. I like the idea of twisting them, thanks!

I buy Rambos. Worth every penny and no leg straps!
But with other horses in the barn that do have leg straps I criss cross. Don’t know why, always have, and they seem to stay on just fine.

I go around each leg (connecting to the same side), crossing them in the middle. It just looks like it would be more comfortable.

First strap around the leg and connect to the same side. Second strap then goes through the loop created by the first strap and also connects back to its own side.

More stable and keeps the straps from rubbing the legs.

This times a million. Also seems to keep them a wee bit cleaner, unless you have my horse, who poops while laying down. :sigh:

I’ve always crossed them to the opposite side, but have nothing against passing them through each other and clipping to the same side. As long as they aren’t rubbing on their hind legs.

I’ve never had a problem with blankets shifting to the side and causing wedgies (though I like having that nugget of information that crossing the straps through each other helps with this if I do see this in the future). The only wedgies I’ve seen are on horses who like to bite the front of their blankets and yank them forward… no amount of fancy leg-strapping is going to fix that! And any Rambo would be off of those guys.

What Mango and furlong said!

I cross to the other side. With my guys, it seems to prevent any blanket slippage, even fairly loose.

This ^

I also do the twist method.

What furlong said.

in the old days, the Big D blankets with the wide leg straps and the T hook closures came specifically with the instructions to NOT cross the straps as it pulled on the straps and would damage the blanket, instead they said to do as above: hook them to the same side, but loop the second strap through the first. I have done it that way with all blankets ever since.

^ This. Always on my Weatherbeetas. Thankfully just the one strap on my Rambos so it’s a non-issue.

I do this. The BO where I board my mare does this without crossing them. I have absolutely no idea how the blankets stay on her horses. They don’t seem to go through that many blankets so I guess it works but I just don’t get it.

This is how I’ve always done it

My mare pees on the tail strap :frowning: I now prefer the leg straps & can only prevent pee splashes if I don’t criss cross them. It gets all over her legs. Boo. luckily things seem to stay straight even without crossing. We have a Schneider’s wardrobe now

I criss cross to was thought that way also was told that when horse roll there is less chance of a hoof getting caught.
My pet peeve is rear flap I really do not see the use for them and my mare will make them discusting, the only one that seems to stay clean is the Big D but in my area one can only find the light turn out, which will not work all winter with our temps. I am ready to remove everyone of them ( about 4 blankets).

This is a brilliant idea. Thank you!!
