Blue Buffalo grain-free

Before I moved to the middle of nowhere, by dogs were on Costco’s food, and they always did very well on it. No problems whatsoever.

Well, I can’t get it in the middle of nowhere. Time to try something else. The “good” food I found to replace the Costco stuff caused the little seizure dog’s cholesterol to go through the roof, so time to find something else. He had also gotten pretty chunky, even on a reduced portion.

So I finally bit the bullet and put them both on the Blue Buffalo grain-free stuff. Boy is it pricey, but on 1/4 to 1/3 cup a day, the two little Schnauzers have never looked better. Perfect weight, better muscle tone, and they haven’t picked up fleas even though they haven’t had Comfortis in a month and a half. Could be a coincidence, but I love this stuff! It’s so packed with nutrition that I’m feeding less, and they look better.

Probably wouldn’t be able to afford it for a big dog, but it’s fabulous for the two little nuggets.

You might be surprised how affordable the really good stuff is even for bigger dogs  Our 70lb GSD/chow mix dogs get a skimpy 2c a day. Of course, they get snacks/treats too, but dog-appropriate, not just what any ol’ people food.

Glad you found this, BB is really a nice food. You could probably even get the non-grain free stuff and do just as well, for a bit less $$

I recommend Blue Buffalo to my friends who want a good dog food but are unwilling/unable to afford the more expensive stuff (Fromm, Evo, Orijen, Ziwipeak, etc). It’s a very good food for the price, and it’s much easier to find/get than those other brands. I’d feed it to my two big dogs, but they have allergies and so are on the Natural Balance limited ingredient foods. The little guys get a combo of some of the big dogs’ food and ziwipeak (which I would feed to everyone if I could afford to, and the big dogs’ allergies would tolerate it!).

Congrats on finding a great dog food- it really does make a difference!

I’m trying this brand for my cats. He has repeated Urinary issues. I hear the grain free is good for the cats, so I’m done trying the prescription stuff. He’s no better on that. He may have stones at this point but I figure it can’t hurt to have him on this type of diet anyway.

My dog has several digestive issues, one of which makes consuming whole bones extremely difficult, therefore making most decent raw diets nearly impossible to feed easily.

I have tried SO MANY of the premium dog foods, and BB Wilderness (grain free) is the only stuff she truly thrives on. She is shiny, soft, doesn’t smell, barely sheds, and makes tiny poops. I love the BB food, and love even more that it’s available at most pet stores.

This is what we feed. Good stuff. Like the others said, our JRT’s look fantastic on it and eat very little. Our cat prefers the barn cat’s cheap Purina food though…go figure…

Ok–is it truly, totally grain free? I have one on Taste of the Wild, as I can get it locally, and she’s off all meds (she is terribly allergic to grain). I can get TOTW for $48/30lb. How do they compare cost-wise?

Started feeding Wilderness 2 mos. ago and so far so good. Big Lab is down from 4 1/2 cups Nutro to a big heaping 3 cups Wilderness, Jacks eat a scant 1/4 cup 2x/day, etc. So far, I really like this food.

HAHA!!! Try feeding two Dobermans (I feed Orijen) and the growing boy gets almost 5 cups/day!!!

I about choked when my sister in law told me her MinPin gets a couple tablespoons of food a day. It is my choice to have big dogs though!

To put in perspective though…we went out to eat the other night and the bill was $64. Same price as a bag of Orijen that lasts the dogs more than two weeks. So…one dinner for us or 42+ meals for the dogs?

I switched all 6 of my dogs to a grain free diet about 2 years ago. I feed Blue Buffalo for Small Breed to my 3 little dogs. The two senior yorkies who used to have skin issues are no longer bothered by them. They used to get greasy feeling fur and smelled bad too…but no longer. Their poop used to smell real bad too…it still smells like poop but not so horrible any more and they make less of it. I think that the better food is well worth the price. I mix it with a spoonfull of canned dog food and everybody is happy. The 3 big dogs are on Taste of the Wild High Prairie and have had similar improvements. Yes it is pricey but worth it.

We love our BB! We put all our pets on it about 3 months ago and I don’t think we’ll ever go back.

We have a 13 year old Golden Retriever who had begun refusing to come up the stairs at night, presumably due to joint/muscle issues. After a few weeks on BB he started coming up willingly on his own again—we didn’t change anything but his food. BB is expensive, but I’d pay any price to have him next to my bed at night.

Our two English labs have SUPER shiny black coats now. We get tons of compliments on their condition.

We have both our rescue cats on BB too. The black cat in particular developed a very shiny and soft coat after we made the switch–her fur looked very dull before.

I love the Blue Wilderness as well. My dog really enjoys it (she’s NOT really into food) and actually eats. She’s put on needed weight and looks great. Nice coat and everything. Definitely good food and I just hope we never have to change (we were dealing with possible allergies, but they’ve gotten better without diet change) as my picky eater actually eats! She’s been on the wilderness since June and was on the regular blue for about 6 months before. Great food. My mom’s dog in his old age tries to ignore dog food, but he liked eating my puppy’s blue so much he’s now on it himself (and actually eating consistently now). Price-wise it’s not terrible either.

I haven’t tried their grain free, but have used their regular large breed puppy food and my lab didn’t do all that well on it… stools were never very firm.
He’s currently on Wellness large breed puppy, but when old enough will switch to Taste of the Wild that my adult corgi is on. Both my dogs are in good weight with super shiny healthy coats.
My cat is also on TotW as well… she also has a sleek shiny coat.

My cats are on BB after a stint on TOTW which none of them enjoyed. They seem to be accepting it with minimal shows of active dislike so far. We shall see. Cats…

The Blue Buffalo WILDERNESS is completely grain-free. They are about the same in price.

None of my cats will eat TOTW, but they all like BB Wilderness. Currently they are eating the duck flavor, which they find quite charming.

It is much cheaper in the long run to buy expensive, grain free food. You’re not paying for all the bulk of cheap corn and byproduct fillers that just runs through the dog’s system and offers them no nutrition.

We have 3 big dogs (60, 80, 105 pounds) and they all eat Taste of the Wild. Even the big dog eats only 3 cups per day. The more meat and less grain the food is, the less you feed.

All 3 of ours are fat, shiny, and perfectly healthy. And sometimes I will put down a meal for them and they don’t even eat it. They just don’t stay starving, begging for food all the time like they did when eating cheaper food with grain in it.

Also we no longer have vet bills for skin allergies and ear infections, which used to be a recurring problem. I hate to think how much $$$ I wasted on steroid injections, pills, and Science Death perscription diet. That all went away years ago when we switched to TOTW. Never had a single problem since.

I’ve had the same results and I’ve often wondered…with what that crappy food was doing to their outsides what ELSE was it doing to their INSIDES?? Their liver, kidneys, etc. After knowing what I now know and seeing the results first hand I will never feed anything but a grain free diet again.

I just switched my Border Collie/Cattle Dog to the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken formula from Wellness Core (and only because I ran out of Wellness, and all the stores I went to were out, so this was the next best thing in my price range).

She loves it! Gets very excited for mealtimes, and still looks great.

My cat eats TOTW, but she only get 1/4-1/3 of cup a day. She also gets a 3oz can of wet split into two meals… the wet food she is picky about. She isn’t on grain free wet though… she’s on nutro natural cans. She does NOT do the pate… chunks in gravy only for her. I try to find the grain free cans that are chunks and not pate but it’s kind of annoying… because the cans don’t always state what they are. So then I have to go ask the store clerk and it’s always hit and miss whether they know. But she’s fat, happy, and shiny.
