Blue Roan Paints

Would like another paint in the future for eventing. Anyone know of Blue Roan Paint breeders in the US? Or gray tobianos?

Google did not hold too much information on the topic.

Karen Bannister, White Harvest Farm, Arvada, Colorado has bred APHA hunters and jumpers for years. She stood Sacred Indian. I watched on of her homebreds ridden by a youngster do one-tempi changes on a circle to music at the APHA World Show one year. That was a gray tobiano. She’s very nice and can steer you in a good direction if she doesn’t have your prospect herself.

You do know that grey tobianos will turn white after a while, right? All greys get lighter with age (some faster than others). Are you actually looking for the breed (Paint) or just the spotted coloring (pinto)?
Paints aren’t typically bred for eventing, so you’ll want to look for something with plenty of TB blood and a sporthorse build, which will further reduce the number of horses to choose from. Good idea to start searching now. You could search for blue roans on the various horse sales websites and find out where they came from to start identifying breeders.
Good luck!

Most people don’t breed for gray pinto - the gray turns white, and then you end up with a gray horse with weird shading from the dark and light skin underneath.

Roan is a tough color to breed for - especially in the “sport horse” world. Years ago (30+), I rode with someone who had a grand prix jumper - blue roan - I think he was an Appendix (QH/TB cross) - but I think that is a real rarity.

Getting the combo of blue (aka black) roan, pinto, and eventing talent may take a lot of searching. But when you find that horse, post pictures - he/she will be stunning! I love the roan colors!

Since roan and tobiano are on the same gene (KIT) the only way to for sure get a blue roan tobiano would be to have both parents “aa”, at least one of them “EE” and one “RnRn” and the other “ToTo”. The resulting offspring would be “Ee” or “EE”, “aa”, “Rnrn”, “Toto”…could be done with HZ roan, even if red, and a double HZ black tobi.

Here is a good looking APHA Blue Roan stallion maybe he will sire a foal this year that is what you want? Seems all of their foals sell out

I have a strawberry roan KWPN mare that has the classic coloring and markings. And, she is Keur Sport to boot so an excellent example of the dutch warmblood breed. I’d love a blue roan! At one point I researched them and there are 2 lines that produce alot of blue roans. Hancock and Valentine. I’m sure if you googled Hancock/Valentine/blue roan you would find lots of information. The Hancock line is more of a ranch horse with longer legs and not so stocky. If you contacted both of these breeders they may be able to steer you to someone who may bred roan crosses. Good luck, and if you find one you must post pictures!

Hey Maude do you have a pic of her? I would like to see

I love that guy. Not sure how he jumps but he has beautiful movement. Unfortunately he was exported to Australia and I don’t think there is semen available to the US.

If you would consider a gray overo instead of tobiano you might want to keep an eye out for this guy’s offspring:

Nootka, I am not very techy or computer savvy and don’t know how to post a picture. If you Google Maternally, Maude an article from 2007 should come up. It is from Kentucky Equine Research’s magazine EquiNews and there is a picture of Maude with her filly and also a head shot of us that shows her unique coloring. We are in Cowgirl Mode in the picture, but I earned my Silver Medal on her. It was always fun because no one knew what she was even though she had the dutch lion brand. I even had someone insist that she was part QH.

Funny enough I did get a grey tobiano filly this year. She’s my fab TB mare bred to Palladio and the cross is so great we don’t care if we take the chance and get grey pinto…so far this is the first time it’s happened. Filly is to die for…but yeah…sadly will fade over time… I know I’m biased but I am just madly in love with this one!!

Partly Cloudy CF

Here is her mom: April Sound, JC “Ruthie Dear”

And her sire: Palladio

I did see a few blue roans from a KWPN line several years back but there were with a backyard breeder type so no real documentation of bloodlines…too bad as they were pretty…

Crestline, that filly’s clearly not going to amount to anything. I suppose I could take her off your hands, as a favor.

Here’s a blue roan appendix in TX…gelding…3…15.2 and growing, Hancock bred, 4K:

Trakehner also has Roan but it is very rare

That is just SO cool. I have never ever seen “true” roan on a warmblood. Really nice mare to boot!

Have you ever had her tested for agouti? It would be wonderful if she could produce a blue roan. Of course, if she did, you would have to sell it to me LOL!

I know he’s a QH, but this is one of the finest examples of the blue roan color I have EVER seen:

I’ll take a nice Dutch warmblood in that color. Yes please!

Wow that roan is really cool!

So this may be a silly question but how do you get a blue roan? I have a bay roan (?) TB/Connemara. What could she produce?

I may be wrong but I think the best way would to breed her to a Homozy black with NO agouti roan stallion
