Board fees in metro areas

I’m curious to see what board fees are at h/j barns in other large metro areas. Here in Orlando it ranges from $650-900 for basic full board.

Within about 45 minutes of Boston, if there is an indoor you are looking at $1,000 and up for basic full board. That number goes up quickly based on location in the North/West suburbs, general proximity to the city and quality of the program/facility. Around $1300 seems to be average and most of those barns have minimum monthly fee requirements.

In Dallas it is at least 1k a month for anywhere within 30-45 minutes of the city that has quality care and instruction.

OTOH, I pay $400/month for great care, 30 mins from Dallas, but no H/J instructor on site.

San Francisco Bay Area - $700 to $1,300 for board at a show barn.

This includes stall cleaning and hay. Turn out, blanketing and grain are often extra (and included with the trainer fees, rather than boarding fees).

Price varies depending on facility amenities.

(and in the same area I pay $450 a month for basic care, and access to good facilities - indoor, jumps, trails, multiple arenas - but not a show barn, and no on site H/J trainer)

Very similar prices in Los Angeles but it’s really all over the map.

Can we also define what is meant by “basic” full board? Here in the Mid-Atlantic states, it usually includes small group turnout for 6-12 hours (overnight in summer, during the day in winter). But growing up in Boston, turnout was definitely extra, and you were lucky to get an hour out in a dirt lot.

I keep my beasts at home, so I am totally out of the loop on costs for my area. When I last boarded about 15 years ago, the range was $350 - 500, with an indoor, horses fed, mucked, turned in and out with blanket changes (within reason). Lower end was an eventing barn, higher end was a h/j barn. It’s likely doubled since then, but I;m sure others more up to date than I will chime in.

Here basic full board is:
Grain and hay twice daily
Stall cleaned daily
Daily turnout
Blanket/unblanketing in the winter

At the bigger barns they may clip faces and ears as well or have other small extras.

Although I picked a horse up about an hour and a half from Orlando once and this barn did once weekly turnout, I was a little surprised by that.

I’m about 45 min outside of DC in MD - board around here is pretty reasonable, from about $650 for full board and up depending on the facility and training/lesson add-ons. Most of the barns around here have decent turnout hours (ie. most of the day weather permitting) grain x 2. Majority of facilities close to me also have indoors, for those without a little less. Most have some trainer onsite as well.

And in California - Basic board is:

  • Bare minium hay (want extra? Big horse needs more? Pay extra. There are a number of barns that only feed pellets or cubes! And ANY hay is extra!)
  • Stall cleaned 6-7 times a week (again, often you can pay extra for 2x cleaning)

Ala cart items that are extra on top of “basic” board:

Turn out
Blanketing
grain feeding / supplements (and usually you must provide the grain)

BUT many trainers have “training” fee, and a FULL training fee, which will include the blanketing / turnout / grain and light grooming, trimming etc.

Out here we often see big multi-trainer facilities. The “barn” cleans the stalls and tosses hay two or three times a day, and all of the rest come under the “trainer’s” barn duties.

And most of these facilities require you be with a trainer in a program or pay an additional often hefty fee.

I live in SE VA (90 minutes outside of Richmond). Board here, is all over the place. Basic board can vary. Where I most recently boarded, it was feed 2x day, 2 flakes of hay 2x a day, stall cleaned 2x a day and turnout 22 hours a day (horses were only in for feeding). Blanketing was not included and was not even an available option. It was the owner’s responsibility. Board there cost $450.

The show barns vary as well. I boarded at a very nice one with individual turnout (6-8 hours), bluestone (outdoor) ring, high quality feed 2x a day, no charge to give supplements (if in smartpaks or baggies), hay twice a day (timothy), blanketing, 1 lesson + 2 training rides per week and the cost was only $725. Another barn with similar amenities is $1100. If you board at a show barn with an indoor, you are looking to spend around $650 without lessons.

OKC seems to be around 600-700 per month for a stall, regardless of whether or not the barn has an indoor. This doesn’t include blanketing, turnout, or lessons.

$800

Within 45 minutes of Richmond, VA the monthly board rate ranges from about $500 to $1200. Almost every barn offers day or night turnout, hay, stall cleaning, grain, feeding of supplements, and blanketing. Blanketing, higher quality grain, and additional hay or shavings are sometimes extra charges. Most barns have some sort of outdoor arena, and at least half have an indoor or covered ring.

A general musing: Board rates do not seem to vary geographically nearly as much as I thought. I pay $600 for stall board at a multi-trainer barn in the SF bay area (some trainers show, some don’t; mine does.) True that blanketing, turnout, and grain are extra, so I suppose that would effectively make my board more like $900 if I didn’t have those included in my training package.

I’ve always had this lovely dream of living on the east coast and boarding a fleet of A-circuit hunters for mere pocket change. Guess I’ll just have to wait to win the lotto.

In Philadelphia (just inside the city line) $660 for daily turnout (6 hours), stall cleaned every day, grain 2x daily, hay in stall 2x daily plus hay in turnout, indoor and outdoor ring, heated tackroom, wash stall with hot water.

Ha! Same here Sweet… I mean rent, real estate, gas, food, EVERYTHING costs more here, so I am surprised to see that board isn’t that much more.

I mean post above says that Richmond VA board runs about $500 - $1200 - about the same as the SF bay area.

But for giggles I just looked at Richmond VA rents.

Looks like for $950 a month or less you can rent a house comparable to the one I rent in San Jose (only my house is more run down) and I pay $2,500 a month in rent!!!

Finding a ROOM to rent for those prices is a challenge around here!

$2k - $3.5k per month on average for decent facilities. Mid-upper typically include some or all training (but its not like you can board there and not pay for training).

In Atlanta (well really north OTP) it’s about 650-1000 for basic; stall/cleaned, grain and hay 2x daily, turnout, maybe blanket changing and holding for vet and farrier. I board all the way in Buford although I live in Alpharetta. It is way cheaper at $475 although the barn really only has a trainer for lower level basic riding but does have an indoor. Gas does sort of even out the cost so it might just be better to board closer.
