I’m literally crying I’m laughing so hard. Thank you @Scribbler I really needed a good laugh today
I cannot imagine why people are questioning that this thread was ever raised. That is so not the spirit of COTH.
COTH is doing what COTH does best. Offer advice, ideas, suggestions and personal experience.
Why a few people are trolling this thread in such a negative way is beyond me. It’s pointless and unkind. If you don’t want to read this thread, go read one of the dozens of others that is active right now. Or amuse yourself elsewhere on the web. Don’t hang around just to be a big old meanie and a negative Nelly.
I think most people underestimate the pain that barn owners can feel when they can’t “fix” boarder’s issues. Not for the boarder’s sake necessarily, but for the horses. We see these critters way more than even a non-negligent owner does. We fret over the care and feeding, we worry about the socialization, the training - all the things. We wouldn’t be in this if we didn’t love these animals.
However, we do have to protect ourselves. It is SO hard.
I’ve asked more than one boarder to leave over care issues (I inherited them) and I worried myself sick over those horses. One of them hadn’t had a hoof trim in well over a year and a half (I had newly purchased the barn when I inherited the problem). But, I have enough horses of my own to care for and manage, and I cannot continue to clean up other people’s messes.
Others have given good advice about liens and conversations, I can’t disagree with any of them. But I do want to just help the lurking BOs know that they are not alone.
This is really hard, and is the significantly less fun part of being a barn owner.
I honestly don’t see a lot of trolling, nor were my posts meant in such a manner. I feel badly for everyone involved, especially the horse. But I also think that a difficult and uncomfortable conversation, sooner rather than later, is the first step, as well as redrafting the current boarding contract, to protect future horses, as well as the BOs from this reoccurring.
Thank you! I totally agree! This thread isn’t about me. It’s purpose is to provide information and ideas to friends of mine. I provided COTH with their ideas so people could understand the situation/thought process a bit more and offer advice, ideas, suggestions and/or experiences. I assumed correctly that people on COTH would have good and varied advice.
I can’t imagine why people have problems with that or question the purpose of this thread! Geez!
Funny…you’ve painted a picture of the HO as a serial manipulative dead-beat price of trash, basically, (and I’m feeling a little undercurrent of shame on her for being pregnant, too—o, the irresponsibility!) and I’m not seeing anything we’ve been told that makes me think that.
Sometimes people’s lives just get crazy busy. Sometimes people procrastinate or forget to take care of things not staring them in the face. I don’t know. The BOs have been happy to take care of this horse without a peep, far as she knows. She doesn’t sound as behind on board as the OP first presented it. I think it’s crappy actually that the BOs don’t want her to take the horse home and instead want to send it someplace else.
Just my thoughts. On this post. That was posted for feedback on… this post.
Wait, the horse owner is way behind on board (usually this means owing thousands), neglects her horse, and it’s the BARN OWNER’S fault???!!
My pet peeve, and why as a BO I won’t ask for advice on COTH, are posters who somehow think the horseowner is always right.
No, the HO is behind and has always been for a year. No, the BOs are not happy to foot the bill for this horse and have been in communication with this owner. The Horse owners can do WHATEVER THEY WANT when they pay the bill in full. Where in hell are you getting your info from?
Trolls on COTH. A real thing.

No, the HO is behind and has always been for a year.
Key piece of information. A “clue” as it were. In my world.
Not a definitive point, just more information that points to a pattern. A consistent pattern.
Generally speaking, not necessarily toward J-Lu whose post is quoted at top of this one …
I’ve stated repeatedly that the picture I painted was a GENERAL synopsis of a type I’ve run into repeatedly in my business. I’m speaking to my own business experience. Other people can take it or leave it.
And that I do not know if it actually fits this HO.
It’s general information that the BO’s may or may not have been exposed to in the past. I really didn’t know about people of that type until I was encountering them in the course of business. Eye-opening. Had to do research to get a handle on what they are doing.
And the Negative Nellies can now proceed to pick and nudge all they wish … that’s on them, I’m not going to argue about it.
