In search of a boarding facility with an indoor that does not require “training board”. Any ideas?
What side of town? What’s your budget?
Lives off Leestown, works off Georgetown, takes classes at Midway, so that area would be most convenient. I have no idea of costs in that area, not looking for a full care (grooming, etc.) but need someplace that will feed at least one time, turn out or bring in, possibly clean stall. She can get to barn everyday but it would be great if she didn’t have to go 2x or be worried that he wasn’t going to get fed if it’s a late day(works for vet and foaling/breeding season is coming).
Interesting … I moved to the area in June of this year & live in Midway. It is still very much the TB Breeding Capital of the World in my opinion rather than the Horse Capital. Options for boarding are few & far between. I am appalled that some places charge MORE for boarding if you do not train. I have a farm sitting job in G’Town for the winter, then I plan to leave the area.
Bryan Station is going to be a hike from Leestown/Midway/Georgetown. Not to mention Leestown seems to have frequent accidents that close the road down.

I can recommend Bryan Station farm. I don’t board there but I strongly considered it, several friends board there. It’s a very nice farm with a lot of price points to make it work for you. I think full care is $300? You can come in off of 64 and get off on Paris Pike to avoid the Leestown Rd traffic. I used to live in Masterson and can’t remember any time where Leestown was closed due to accident. It does close due to flooding closer to Midway. And it is a MADHOUSE starting around Thanksgiving going til Christmas due to the Amazon fulfillment warehouse.
I’ve heard good things about Ballyhigh, and shown there- very nice facility- but don’t know what their prices are.
Both Champagne Run and Antebellum might be better location-wise. Champagne Run does require a lesson package, but it is a pretty high end facility and I’m sure the care is excellent. I hear some mixed reviews on Antebellum but I think some of that is just snobbish-ness (if that’s a word lol!). I’ve shown at Antebellum and it seems well-run; I’ve known people who kept their horses there that were very happy.
I’m not entirely sure what fossiloverfences is talking about- there are plenty of boarding places within a reasonable distance of town at EXCELLENT prices. I pay $60/ month for self care!! I’ve lived in GA, VA (both SW and DC area), and TX and Lex has the best boarding situations of anywhere I’ve ever lived. I have not encountered anywhere that charges more for non-training board, just many that require it. The corridor between Lex/ Midway and Lex/ Versailles has a bit of a higher concentration of TB farms which may limit your options, but it’s not like Lex is a huge city, if something is on the other side of town it’s not like it takes forever to drive there!
You should join the “central ky equestrian” group if you’re on facebook and ask the same question!
Check out heritage farm, right off of Georgetown road and 460 in Georgetown. Reasonable prices and nice people.

Thanks for the heads up about Leestown/amazon. I have been re-routed twice on Leestown due to accidents in the past month. Maybe that is unusual – I am too new here to know.
BallyHigh was one of the ones who said I would pay $100 more per month if I did not train.
I come here from areas that were 10 minutes home to barn & find that 30-40 minutes from one side of Lex to the other is not unusual.
And last but not least … I do have high expectations: individual turnout during the day, wash stall w/hot & cold, ring w/good footing, washer/dryer, client bathroom, etc.

Where did you come from? Maybe I should move there when I graduate!!
Leestown/Mercer Rd are horrible. I worked in the industrial park on Nandino at G’town Rd and that was bad enough. Lexington is a city that still has a rush hour, and man is it nasty. The rest of the day it’s easy to get around but during the school year the 8-9AM and then after 3PM, ick.
I guess I’m old and sick of driving my life away so I may have more in common with FoF. Champagne Run is Too Far.
I haven’t been in the H/J world since 2008, partly because I couldn’t find a place close by with lesson horses once I moved out of Lex. You might try the KHJA website.
Getting around Lexington it helps to know the backroads, so from Masterson it’s possible to cut up to Spurr and squiggle around to Citation and G’town Rd and come out almost across from Rood and Riddle.
There are a couple of farms in G’town proper off Ironworks Rd @ Frankfort Pike. You’ll never find them using google maps because the street name is wrong.
One is Brannon Stables I think and there are a couple there, not really high end facilities, mostly cater to ss and youth but might suit. Heritage is at the corner of Newtown Pike and Paris Pike, EZ drive from Midway, 64 to 62 to the G’town Bypass to 460.
I was always after a good trainer AND good lesson horses AND an indoor and that narrows the search considerably.
Thanks for all the info. She lives right off of New Circle/Leestown and her current barn is straight out Leestown past Masterson Station. Haven’t had any traffic problems but she tends to not be on the road at normal rush hours.
She is setting up appointments to visit a few places. Does anyone know - are jumps available at Bryan Station? What about Punchestown? Anyone know of that facility/ trainer?
I was on the equestrian team at UK and we rode out of the Murphy’s barn. I graduated in 2011 so I honestly don’t know what the status is
Also at Murphy’s, in the 10AM Monday class. I was their token bad rider. Not joking either.
Punchestown is another on the other side of town and they do have a website. http://punchestownstable.com/
River Mountain is the home stable of Callie Schott http://www.rivermountainfarm.com/ it’s fairly close to Bally High near Versailles.
One thing to do is go to Wise Choice tack shop and ask there. That’s how I found a place that met my criteria for lessons. It helps to network and if you don’t know people you won’t find out about all the little places around town.
I called Murphy’s, several times, in June before moving the horse up. Even went by when trying to gauge travel time and left number with an instructor. Never received a call back. Not very professional.

Barn owners dont make much/if anything off board, so I dont see why charging more for a non training client is an issue.
OP I sent you a PM.

Weird, I just got an email from COTH. I cleaned it out I think
ReSomething – you and I are on the same page. I too am too old to spend lots of time driving in heavy traffic.
ellevt – I came from Aiken, SC & plan to go back. Small town so employment is tough to find but more sport horse friendly than Lex.
I called Murphy & Callie Schott also. Murphy passed me off to his daughter Melissa who has the barn on Ironworks & had room. Callie also had room; downside there is VERY big (50ish h/j horses & 35 polo ponies) plus lots of lessons/kids.
I guess my opinion on the training issue is that good ones will have an adequate following & the not so good ones are who stick a gun in your back for more $$. I am lucky enough to free lance work for a couple of h/j BNTs in the area who are available to lesson from & don’t need the local scene for training.
