Boarding in/near Chapel Hill, NC

Hi,
I’m looking for a place to board my young appendix mare, who I’d eventually like to event with. I live in Chapel Hill, and convenience is very important for me as I am a student with limited time, and I like being out at the barn on a daily basis. Self- board is unfortunately out of the question for me at the moment, and I’d like to find a place that is $450 or less a month. I’d love a place with jumps and a lighted place to ride, but the most important thing for me is finding a safe, low- drama place to enjoy my horse! I know that my criteria will probably rule out most places, but any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I’m assuming you are going to UNC? Congrats, it’s a great school.
I’ve personally never been to this barn but I remember Sharon oaks stables being in your budget when I was looking for a place a few years ago.
Also apex and fuquay aren’t too far and there are several barns if you google.

My barn is probably way too far for you but we have a cross country course.

Thanks for the reply. I looked it up and it is unfortunately a good 45 minutes from me… it looks like a great place though.

Hi Laney!!! I think you can assume who this is…

Haha… hey!

Any other ideas would be great!

You could look at Jordan Lake Equestrian Center, Terrell’s Creek Farm, Twin Creeks Farm (would be more in your budget). There is also Chapel Hill Equestrian, Soggy Acres, to name a few.

I’m moving my mare this weekend to Lazy Tree Farm, which is very close to UNC. I have been in this area for years and had not heard of it before until I came across an ad, and I have a friend who rides there and who is really enjoying it. The barn isn’t fancy, but the horses look well cared for. There is a dressage arena with lights and a grass ring with jumps. There are some older cross country jumps in the big mare field, and you can ride in the field (it’s quite large!). The BO teaches lessons and trailers students to shows. We’re moving there since it’s much closer to home for us. Board is $400. Message me if you want more info on other barns in the area - I would not personally recommend a couple that have been listed here, but everyone has different preferences.

Action42: Do you have more info on Twin Creeks or Soggy Acres (or where to find it)?

I was just thinking Lazy Tree sounded right up your alley, but Grey beat me to it.

Soggy I think goes by umm, Forest View now - it's on Mt Sinai between Murphy School and Friends School roads. Last I heard it had more of a dressage clientele and was a bit above your price range, but it has a lot going for it too. It does have the indoor, a lit outdoor, and direct access to trails. PM me if you want me to look up contact info - though honestly, swinging by at feeding time and chatting might be best. Pretty sure the day to day manger is named Matt.

Chapel Hill Equestrian has a pretty active group of tennagers and young adults eventing. I think board is around $550 there, but again, lights, covered, and way convenient.

Ahh, and Terrells Creek could be a good option too. Not positive about the lights, but long strong eventing roots, and some good folk based there.

i boarded at Terrell’s Creek during college and loved it. Gloria (the BO) is great, at the time there were a few prelim and above riders, and most of the kids were pony clubbers. its not a far drive from UNC, and at the time i went there were a few UNCers there, so it was pretty convenient to carpool.

Thanks again for the info! Does anyone know how much board is a Terrell’s Creek? I wasn’t able to find much information on it…

(Terrell’s Creek) Gloria’s email is rippertong@bellsouth.net. She’s great and a driving buddy of mine.

I know of a place and durn it, can’t remember the name or owner! It is a very nice place and will try hard to think of it, it is west of Chapel Hill maybe 15 or so minutes, I don’t think they advertise, but its very lovely. My brain just won’t function this AM, I have contacted a friend who used to work there tho as to the name and contact info.

I’m at Terrell’s Creek Currently (hi string!) and it is, indeed, great. Board is currently $525. Awesome trails, two rings, dressage ring is lit, but lights aren’t powerful enough to light the jump ring with when dark. Great barn that stays cool in summer, warm in winter. And AWESOME people. no drama. It is a great atmosphere. PM me if you want with any other questions, or email or call Gloria, who owns the place, as others suggest

I am also moving to Chapel Hill later this summer and have been making the rounds at the barns. I haven’t been able to find any contact info for Soggy Acres, but would love to check them out as well.

Terrell’s Creek has gotten many good recommendations, and Gloria seems lovely. I have to be honest, though, my biggest concern when I visited there was the fact that the barn seems like one big fire hazard. I know it’s probably me just being paranoid, but all the barn fires in the last couple of years have really awakened this risk to me. But I’m not ruling it out entirely - since I’m not moving til later this summer, I’ll probably make a decision based on who has a stall available at the time!

I believe Soggy Acres is now Forest View Farm - I got their email address to pop up through a Google search earlier when I was looking for barns in the area.

Perhaps Rivendale? Lovely place, and should be within your price range. Dressage ring, large jump arena, a few XC jumps, great turnout.
