BOs - Things you never thought you had to tell your boarders NOT to do......
Uh… I’ve never had to take tampons with me when I leave. Does the bathroom not have a trash can?!
That one had me scratching my head too. I totally understand not flushing them especially if barn is on a cistern. Wrapping them up so the person cleaning the bathroom doesn’t have to see them in the garbage and putting them in the trash can seems like the common sense thing to do? Am I crazy?

Please please please DO NOT tie your horse to the water faucet. Yes it was done and the parents of the little darling could not understand why I was upset because ‘she’s just a kid’. Ummm that’s why you need to supervise your child at the barn! And yes it was in the winter.

Not all barns have bathrooms. Ours has a portajohn but this was before it was setup. The boarder who repeatedly did this would not wrap her fem trash. She just threw it in the barn trash for all to see. And after having to clean up the trash on more than one occasion because some critter got in it, it is now the rule that it goes with you. I’m not about to clean up anyone’s monthly stuff again. That is just gross. I keep plastic store bags in our portajohn for that purpose.
Besides tampons really aren’t meant to be flushed despite what the box says. ; )

Its rude not to wrap in TP… But I would never think I’d have to take my bathroom trash home with me. You really expect boarders to come equipped with a roll of doggie waste bags or to carry around their tampons as they ride etc.?! That would be a dealbreaker for me. Trash cans… Trash is what they’re for?! Liners and lids also available?!
Please don’t tell me my husband is hot and you’d do him in a heartbeat when you come to check out my place to board.
Well, I dunno. I see this post and my reaction is, “Field trip to Chachie’s!!” (Not that I personally would notice anything but the stalls, the hay, the turnout, the footing, etc. if I were looking at a barn for boarding, but, this comment just struck me as very funny, and begging for some irreverent response in equally poor taste on par with the boarding candidate’s, uh, misplaced directness)

Sorry, Chachie! (Really, I genuinely am.)

Well VXF11, this IS a thread about things you never thought you’d have to tell boarders and well, I never thought I would ever have to tell someone that. But then, most of the posts are things no one ever thought we would have to say to our boarders, some are common sense, like feeding the horses. But then there’s the head scratchers, like running over someone’s chickens. Or wrapping up your personal trash when there’s paper towels, kleenex etc every where. I file this under the “your momma doesn’t work here” rule lol
And SharonA, lol yeah it was in poor taste when she said that but by that time, I knew I wasn’t going to have her board here. I just gave her The Look. Mr. Chachie looks like Eric Church and I’m not at all insecure but really, why on earth would you say that to someone you just met and are trying to do business with?!
People just amaze me.

I agree not wrapping it up is rude. Expecting boarders to carry around used tampons is weirder though?! When you’re out in public… Do you take your bathroom trash home with you?! If you go to someone’s house?! I suppose you can run your barn however you like but don’t be shocked when you have to TELL people that the trash can is off limits for TRASH because that is far off regular social norms and no one will expect that. Wrap it up and throw it our neatly… Sure. Take it with you-- not a typical norm!

Please don’t show up at midnight on Christmas Eve because you wanted to see if the animals really did talk (they don’t!) and have me have to get dressed and haul my butt out to the barn to see what is going on.
Thought of this as I showed up quietly on Christmas Day to leave something for the BO and give my guy his new halter and get in a few Christmas hugs. Then hopefully left unobtrusively.

And noticed that the horses still inside the barn weren’t talking - but kind of had smirks on their faces.

The boarders don’t need to go to the barn at midnight to hear their horses talk - they just need to ask me.
RT would say ‘food, food, fooooood’
Simon would say ‘lights out, I want to sleep’
Bob would say ‘can I help?’
Austin would say ‘I want to go out’
DD and DP would say ‘time to eat!’
Tanq would say ‘OMG, it’s the end of the world!’
Bento would say ‘get this damn strap off so I can wind suck’
Forte would say ‘I want out if Austin’s going out!’
Quin would say ‘time to work?’
Fabian would say ‘cool, your here!, HI MOM!’
Dillon and Chance would say ‘play time’
Epic would say ‘go away’
Perri and Paladin would say ‘hate being INNNNN!’
Slick would say ‘great, ANOTHER meal!’
Sam would say ‘feed me first’
Alex would say ‘do I HAVE to wear boots?’
Toby would say ‘give me hay!’
Margalo would say ‘hate you, hate them, feed me’
Valor would say ‘see me tossing this feed tub? stupid human!’

See, I am a horse psychic in addition to being a BO.

My boarders are awesome. I think I have a low 'crazy people" tolerance and it shows. Otherwise known as being a bossy B. But, it works. No nut jobs in my barn.

Imagine . . . If you were in an accident on the way home and injured, and someone else had to go through your belongings and found a used feminine hygiene product. The horror. I have never heard of taking something like that home to dispose of, other than when a friend went on a wilderness camping trip and had to take everything (used toilet paper, etc.) with her until they had access to a trash can. I heard that and knew that while I could do that if I had to, it isn’t something I’d sign up for voluntarily.

Maybe what they mean about not leaving feminine products behind, is in the main trash, instead of the bathroom trash can.

Worst thing I ever did was in cahoots with the BM/BO.

Drove my carriage past a bunch of dressage horses. No one was riding but rider freakouts ensued.
Better yet: drive a Mini! Those horse-eating mutants will getcha every time!!

Nope, she said she expected boarders to TAKE THEIR USED TAMPONS/PADS WITH THEM?!
Ok gotta chime in…

To my boarders:

Please don’t throw your used pads and/tampons in the barn trash. Take them with you.
Emphasis mine.

Emphasis mine.

I cannot imagine the conversation with a prospective boarder… here’s our arena, this would be your stall, board is $500/month due on the 1st, here are the bags for you to put your used tampons when you carry them around in your pocket in because we don’t allow you to throw them in the trash…

That would be a deal killer for me. Though I am not sure I’d otherwise want to board at a place that (1) had no bathroom for a while (so how was the boarder taking out her tampons, were boarders peeing in the stalls or what?!); and (2) had critters running loose through the barn, pulling apart the trash. You’d think instead of the war on tampons, the BO/BM would seal the barn up from critters, get some trash can liners, and a sturdy trash can with a good locking lid. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I mean, tampons or no tampons you don’t want critters running through the barn ripping into the things. If we’re talking wild critters (possums, racoons, etc.) I’d be worried about them getting into the feed and/or rabies/EPM. Instead of the war on tampons, I’d want my BO/BM to prevent barn access and/or trap and remove the critters. If it’s dogs ripping into the trash. I’d want my BO/BM to either get the dogs under control and/or ban them if they can’t behave. Again, war on tampons doesn’t seem to be the answer.

I totally get that it’s gross to have to clean up used feminine products that are not wrapped up. I worked retail at a store with a public restroom. Trust me, I get it. Expecting boarders not to flush feminine products and to leave the bathroom neat is TOTALLY REASONABLE. But expecting people NOT to use the trash FOR TRASH and instead to carry around used feminine products is the craziest thing I’ve heard in a long, long time. What’s next? Can’t throw away used tissues? Have to carry and bring home the TP if you go #2? What is the point of a trash can if you can’t throw trash in it?!

A healthy well fed cat actually does a better job hunting than a hungry deprived cat.

I want to make sure I understand this correctly. You are talking about a time frame when you had no toilet facilities (which does not bother me, been at barns like this) and someone tossed their used feminine products into the general trash unwrapped so you made a rule that everything has to go with them? Now that you have a porta-john you still require people to take that stuff with them.
Add me to the crowd that thinks it is weird to expect people to carry them with them. I am all for a reminder that they need to be wrapped in the trash and that most things people think are flushable are not. I just do not get the part about taking it home. Heck, even the carry in carry out parks have a trash can in the little no water toilet rooms and no notes about not putting feminine stuff in that trash can.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to put out a box of dog waste bags or something similar and just ask the women to please put used feminine hygiene products in said bags and then knot them before putting them in the garbage?

“War on tampons.”

Hahaha!

It does seem a bit odd to me to say, “Your mother doesn’t work here” in reference to this issue. I would think that most people do not require, for example, visitors to their home to take used feminine hygiene products back with them. I do think that if dogs getting into the trash is an issue or concern in the least, a trash can with a secure lid is a necessity. They are dangerous to dogs.
As far as barn cats, I’m also one that thinks that feeding them doesn’t make them less likely to hunt, and they need taurine.

Do people really need to be changing their ‘feminine products’ in the 2 hrs it takes to groom, ride and put up their horse?
If it were that bad, I’d be skipping riding that day.
Thank God for menopause!

Uh…yes, on some days. And the pressure of riding can make things a little less secure than desired, so it’s something I like to check on post ride…

However, since someone here turned me on to the disposable cups, it’s been far less of an issue!!
