Anyone care to share links for online purchases? Please and thank you.
I just got this one… very heavy, but works well. https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=431A0BC6-7B8F-4EE7-ADF6-309425103DFD
I used to use the Lasko fans with the enclosed motor and they worked really well (I only use them one season then pitch them). However, this year I’ve had several fail within a month after purchase. I would stay away from anything made by Lasko as the quality has gone way, way down. I now use fans similar to the one SarahandSam recommended. I got mine at Home Depot, but they tend to sell out fast.
Lasko makes an enclosed-motor fan? Link?
Wouldn’t the seller stand by a warrantee? I have no qualms about bringing itmems back to sellers that fail prematurely.
What do you mean by “enclosed motor”? I feel like every box fan I’ve ever used has an enclosed motor (i.e., inside the piece in the middle that is attached to the fan blades).
I recently went on Amazon to buy a new box fan and was a bit surprised to see that almost all the box fans under $40 get mediocre reviews. I think that you need to expect them to only last one season. (Though, hopefully not less than a month like the previous poster said!)
This is what I used for several years until the quality bottomed out this year:
Yeah, I could take them back, but what a hassle! And the ones I got to replace the first ones also failed. I won’t use them anymore because on 3 of them the motor started to smell hot and the fan was making loud noises. Fortunately I work from home and caught them right away or I could have had a fire.
I never save box fans from year to year like so many do. They’re really not made for barn use. I vacuum mine weekly (never hose off) and then pitch at the end of the season.
See, Gainer, that’s not an enclosed motor type fan. I have a very similar model in my barn and only use them for 2 years. I disassemble them each year and wipe the blades and outside casing down, blow out the motor, then re-assemble and store. I’m with you on the fire hazard. So scary.
We had a barn fire next town over last week. Pretty sure the investigation is ongoing but I’ll bet dollars to donuts a fan was to blame. Thank Goddess no-one was hurt and all horses were evacuated in time.
I think what is confusing to me is, that everyone who posts a fan that is actually closed motor the fan is not a box fan.
Are there actually any box fans that are closed motor?
I’ve never seen a box fan that had an enclosed motor, and was therefore safe to use in a barn.
We use these: https://www.rammfence.com/barn/horse-barn-ceiling-fans/18-inch-basket-fan
I think the term is sealed motor.
Amazon has some 18" sealed motor fans that have good reviews. They’re in the $80 range, which seems to be a stellar price for these things.

Just got them, very powerful, doubt I’ll use high or I"ll have real “horse flys!” LOL
This is a 14" fan… The 18" ones there are a little pricier.
This is the one I’ve been eyeballing

I wonder why they do not make a box fan like this.
They are so much easier to use in many cases.
Price?
Here’s a sealed motor UL listed agricultural box fan
Cha-ching.
Guessing that getting that UL listing on your fan is $$, and there’s not enough demand for that in box fans. Horse people who want a UL listed fan buy the basket ones, the people who want a box fan buy the non UL listed box fans. Market segment of people willing to spend a hundred plus bucks on UL listed box fan must be quite small, or someone would step in and fill that niche…
Wonder, too, if there’s something about the size of a sealed motor that makes it difficult to fit into a typical box fan set up?
Timely thread - thanks for starting it, Sansena. Couple of questions about the enclosed motor fans people are using. Are they super loud? And can you mount them on a stall front with bars like you mount a box fan? Looks like the bracket for the Valley Vet one could go straight up, so the fan could be strapped to the top of the stall door?
I buy 18 or 24" Durafans from FarmTek or QC Supply.
Not specifically a “box fan”.
Use on lowest speed. Hangs from a heavy chain on stall front outside bars.
Valley Vet has this one on sale (J&D Mfg. 18"). Super reviews.
$$$$ :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:!!!
I do have one box fan with a sealed motor. I had to look high and low to find it. It wasn’t cheap but not too awful, I think around $100. After I decided I liked it, I ordered two more but they were backordered for a while and then the order was finally cancelled because the model was discontinued. I looked again after that and couldn’t find any. It’s odd because I agree that box fans can be easier/better in certain applications so you’d think there would be a market for them.
This does not look like it has a sealed motor. The 14" is what I have and it’s plenty for my 10x12 stalls.
