Today.
McKenzie is reportedly somewhat difficult to ride in a race, you cant actually touch him with the whip, just show it to him. He also hates being among others in a group as he was earlier in the race and he got pinched back pretty good in the far turn. He did come on after that but didn’t hold on to win. Mike Smith was not onboard and that jockey switch didn’t change much, I guess.
Paulick Report on Twitter:
Re: Mongolian Groom, who was pulled up and vanned off about a furlong out from the finish of the #BC19 Classic–Horse has been radiographed and has fractures in the lower portion of his cannon bone and upper portion of his pastern…
Connections are receiving consults from experts and will discuss their options, per last update from
@AAEPHorseDocs
On Call vet and
@roodandriddle
surgeon Dr. Al Ruggles…
Ruggles: “It’s obviously a challenging injury. You have to have an honest discussion of what the options are and what the risks are. Hopefully it’s something that can be managed.”
Mongolian Groom is a gelding so I don’t think there are many options, unfortunately.
I thought cannon bone when I saw him break down in the background. No horse was by him at that point. I didn’t see any contact.

I doubt Mike would have tried to go up inside War of Will at that point in the race. I thought Joel moved a bit early; maybe he did not want to be next to War of Will.
I really hope they can do something to save him, but only if it’s the kindest thing to do for the horse. I thought that Barbaro went through too much for too long, only to make humans feel better. MHO only.
I watched video and also did not see contact. There is a still shot where WoW’s jock is looking to the right and down at MG as MG’s jock pulls him up, left hind not where it should be. If there are fractures of cannon and pastern, likely only one humane decision.
Sounds ominous.
MG was running in a group and fading just before the jockey clearly was pulling him up, they did show that part of the stretch drive a couple of times. He had been running second then dropped back quickly…
It was a very strange looking injury and I just read it was the left hind ankle (pastern). That automatically is better than a severe front end breakdown but it still doesn’t mean he can be saved–or should be.
I don’t want to see it, I’ve seen catastrophic injuries before. I’ve seen them in races on TV and in pastures in person.
It’s too sad, at a time when I need cheer.
I guess making the track heavy going wasn’t the answer.
At this point it’s only been an hour, they may be seeking some consults and certainly conferring with the ownership group about options and choices. Will wait for more details before forming an opinion about what happened.
Makes me feel sick to my stomach…the races had all been going well and right before the classic I thought “just one more race to get through safely”. 😢
Yep you and me both.
I turned off the TV before the race had even finished, put on my headphones and gardened in the twilight.
What a damn shame.
And the fact that you thought of it that way Countrygirl18, is the actual shame. I’ve never missed a televised race for the past 50 years or more, but I really think I hit my wall tonight. I’m getting no pleasure from it anymore. I could watch racing if I didn’t really love horses and just wanted to bet, but that’s not me. It’s just too sad and upsetting.
Many jingles for Mongolian Groom and his connections. Many jingles for all of us. These things… they aren’t fair…
While you are entitled to your humble opinion, as someone who was part of Barbaro’s treatment team and can give you every detail of every decision made, at no point was that horse being kept alive “only to make humans feel better.” That horse had an incredible will to live and I feel confident that most anyone else would have done the same if they had the means.
I normally bite my tongue and let these things roll of my back. I apologize that you are getting a raw reaction.
It happens at about 1:53 on the replay. MG isn’t near any other horse & does NOT get stepped on.
you can very clearly see him take the bad step/breakdown the second it happens.
I have watched it again and I agree, it does not look like any contact.
There are now several posts on Twitter that MG was euthanized, including a post from Jay Privman, Daily Racing Form. But I don’t see it on Paulick Report.
