So can they race in a hack?

So good to see Edzo in action and looking well.

However ā€¦ I read somewhere recently that the name of a famous racehorse canā€™t be used again for another racehorse. Just a name can, but not the name of a well-known horse. So how come there is a Whistlejacket running today?

And speaking of famous racehorses, itā€™s cool that there is a race named for Flying Childers.

It is going to be a late night for us east coasters

Ryan Moore is certainly not one to hog the limelight, is he!

Equibase has five Whistlejackets and one Whistle Jacket listed. The most recent is a 4yo gelding, but he only started twice with a maiden win and a fifth in an optional claiming.

Different registries have different rules - the name could not have been used for a '22 US bred horse, but Coolmoreā€™s Whistlejacket is Irish-bred.

I know Australia had a fifth-tier runner back in (I think) the 90s named Citation, which annoyed a lot of people.

More scratches this morning.

Oh Soul of an Angel you good girl! That was exciting!

Why so many scratches I wonder?

As to the races, for some reason i just donā€™t care this year. Well, Iā€™ve never gotten all excited about the BC, as itā€™s a fairly new biggie, I didnā€™t grow up with it, and Iā€™d much rather have had the worldā€™s classics shown on US TV all these years than a new kid on the block show up and declare itself the world series of flat racing (althoā€™ i grant you it is at least a real world series).
Anyway i do want to see Fierceness run, as he was my pick for the Derby.
Other than that I just canā€™t get excited. Even though the Advil has finally kicked in for my painful back.

So glad she beat the Baffert entrant, Pleasant. Petty of me, I know.

Iā€™m watching on CMH and my German is rusty.

Anyone know what happened in the starting gates before race five? Looked like a horse flipped over and the jockey bailed. Cameras cut away and I couldnā€™t hear fast enoughā€¦

Race 5
Believing flipped in the gate, late scratch. Ryan Moore seemed ok, but was holding his arm/hand.

Starlust got up late to win.

well, it has been around since 1984 so it isnā€™t that new anymore. I have trouble with things like that. Forty years is a pretty long time. I used to follow all the racing when there was very little coverage. Some time after Zenyatta, I have sort of lost interest. They break down too often, never stay racing. It just isnā€™t fun for me anymore. Bur I am watching. I havenā€™t heard of any of the horses except Thorpedo Anna, Fierceness, and City of Troy. But I can cheer on the winners. I do not gamble so that is of no interest to me.

Thorpedo Anna was never even challenged.
Really hope to see her back next year.

Of course the naysayers & armchair trainers will say she beat nothing much in the race, so proved nothing

Thorpedo Anna is really remarkable. I was skeptical after her last start when she won by a neck, but she carried the field here.

Iā€™m watching on Peacock- in a clip right before she got in the gate, she looked like a coiled spring. A picture of perfect condition.

I donā€™t know that itā€™s petty. Baffert shouldnā€™t even be racing. The horses deserve better.

But then I donā€™t understand about Oliver Townend or Chad Brown either.

40 years is nothing in horse racing. The Kentucky Derbyā€™s been around since 1875. The Belmont is even older. And look at the Derby, the Grand National, and the Melbourne Cup.

Jayarebe collapsed after the finish of race 7, as he was being pulled up.
Ambulance is on the track attending to him.

He was unconscious when they loaded him into the ambulance. Itā€™s assumed to have been a cardiac event at this point.
