[B]Rough Sailing euthanized after falling in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf
By The Associated Press (CP) – 25 minutes ago
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rough Sailing sustained a fatal injury in the US$1-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on Saturday at Churchill Downs.
The two-year-old fractured the right humerus, a major support bone in the upper leg, when he slipped and fell going into the first turn. He was taken off the track in a van and examined on the back straight.
“It’s not a fracture that’s repairable,” on-call veterinarian Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith said.
Jockey Rosie Napravnik, unseated in the spill, walked off and was not hurt.
Atta Boy Roy was more fortunate. He was pulled up following the $2-million Sprint as jockey Calvin Borel jumped off and a splint was applied to the horse’s right leg.
He sustained only a mild ligament injury, McIlwraith said.

I loved the response to Jeanine Edwards about what makes Uncle Mo special:
“He runs really fast for really long. It’s just that simple.”
Ruby, you beat me to it! But it was a laugh out loud quote.
distance limitations bah!
They are STILL saying Uncle Mo will not go 1 and 1/4. Well, who knows if he will but he DISTANCED the FIELD.
That comment by Pletcher definitely got a (very loud) laugh out of me. Right up there with Uncle Mo’s owner announcing that he’s going to get really drunk tonight. Priceless.

Indian Charlie isn’t exactly known for throwing route horses, but Uncle Mo wouldn’t be the first horse to outrun his pedigree on the first saturday in may. Damsire Arch (one of my favs of recent years, but I just love those Claiborne boys) is another story, I believe.
And with that victory I believe that his wife Maria will get to buy more then a couple pair of new boots: from Portfolio Magazine
One convert is his wife, Maria, who, according to Repole, treats herself to a shopping spree each time he buys a horse. He even named a $120,000 two-year-old No Shopping Maria, in his wife’s honor. When the filly won her second race by five lengths, Repole called Maria with the news. She was at a Prada boutique and was thrilled. “Great,” she responded. “Now I can buy a second pair of boots.”
Go Goldikova!

Along that vein, Mr. RF and I were just discussing what we would buy if we ever had a BC winner; Mr. RF, who is not terribly horsey, said the first thing he’d buy is a bigger house… so the horse could live in the house.
Onward: Let’s go Goldi!
I am going to be @ a showjumping event judging all day (it’s 7.30am here). Does anyone know what most people will be using as a twitter hashtag for the race - I’d like to know what happens in between calling faults.

Goldikova!

Wow! What an amazing champion! She started to move, and there was never any doubt!

Yes, she is amazing!
I believe this makes 8 times she’s beaten the boys in her career…what an amazing mare!
With Goldy I won the exacta (props to Gio, too) and the Pick 3 Thanks gal, I knew ya could do it!
World traveler, takes on the boys, hasn’t lost a step in form year over year and simply never says boo instead her reply is: “what’s up next”
For the time being she’s the first horse ever to win 3 Breeders’ Cup races.
Enjoy history folks as you just saw one of the best horses ever to run in a BC race.
a sad thought
I am hoping Queen Z will win, but I cannot for the life of me understand why the connections haven’t challenged her this year. Maybe last year, but when she won, who is gonna beat her? It seems to me they don’t trust her. Like you say, Goldi has beaten the colts 8 times! Does anyone think Z couldn’t? I think the dirt won’t matter, all the boys have beaten each other, and as was noted on another thread, this stretch is longer than the California tracks which will I think HELP her. I know they have been looking at the record books but they seemed so upset last year when Rachel beat her for HOY, and I just think the company she has kept this year to be the equivelant of the Bronx Bombers beating the Little League World Series.
