Bring back full chaps!

Many years ago when I was several breeches sizes smaller, I had a pair of english full chaps with fringe. Sadly I outgrew them, and I think by then they were already out of fashion.

Yesterday I swung by QH Congress and did some shopping (meh) and watched the new and wildly popular ranch classes. THE CHAPS. I WANT THEM. Personalized and matchy, I NEEDS THEM.

Thus, I am starting a campaign to bring back ENGLISH FULL CHAPS!!!

English full chaps are considered fashionable here in Ontario. I have a custom pair that I wear once it starts getting cooler out.
Last week I was showing at CEP and there were lots of pros and amateurs hacking in the mornings with full chaps. One BNT had her full chaps with lots of fringe on all day.

Yep full chaps have been SUPER in fashion the last couple years. You’ve been missing out, they’re all over the warmup rings when it’s not 100+ degrees out. The better companies have been backordered on custom work due to demand.

I’m in the SE US, and obviously social media, FWIW.

WHAT!!!

I am mostly an eventer so I’m clearly out of the loop.

What companies? I like the Pinnells but those are way way out of my budget.

Micro trends in H/J are like that - it’ll hit the eventers right about the time they start fading out of fashion over here

That said, good quality gear that serves a purpose never goes out of style

As a teen, I coveted the full chaps of the oh-so-cool instructors at my barn and swore I’d buy myself a pair when I grew up.

As a teen, I discounted the metabolism required to fit into those fixed-dimension chaps on long-term basis.

As an adult, I think my teen self seriously underestimated the value of spandex.

I had a pair oh Journeymen chaps…now I can’t remember what happened to them.:grinning:

Tenneys is still making them…

Too bad my double extra long fringe (underlayer was metallic) no longer fit me, they were my absolute faves. I was still wearing full chaps looooong after they were out of fashion, in fact not too long ago someone told me that last pair showed up on google not too log ago when they googled full chaps!

I love mine on cold days - they’re warm and give you extra grip when horses are being silly!

Try eBay. They had some journeymen sites listed.

My knees object! I’ll stick with tall boots, thanks. I had two lovely pairs of custom chaps back in the 90s, fringe and all. I loved them back in the day, especially in winter. Until the zipper broke or got stuck in the fringe. But my knees just hurt too badly to return to them now. The pressure of the chap made my patellas sad…

To complete the old school retro look, don a pair rust breeches and outfit your pony in a saddle pad made of a navajo print rug.

I feel seen

(Except I was so retro that there’s NO WAY there was breeches under those chaps. Jeans tyvm)

I love it! I so wish I could fit into my old full chaps…I guess there’s my weight loss goal!

Is that your Lido Palace baby?!

Yeah, even showing western with longer stirrups, my knees strenuously objected to the constriction of leather chaps across them. They’re not even happy about non-stretchy denim. They’ve been cranky from an early age…

Yup, although he ended up taking the very early retirement route. And if you want to feel old, he’s 16 now

(Also, those chaps are not fitting me anymore either!)

Oh my gosh, I can’t believe he’s 16! I’m so sorry to hear about the early retirement route. :frowning: He was always so lovely.

Team full chaps here! Mine are Pinnell, circa 2005 but I’ve gotten leather added to the legs to accommodate my not teenage legs lol.

I wear them Jan-March pretty religiously! They’re so warm!

Wore them all the time as a kid, got a new pair of Journeymans about 7 years back. They are gorgeous, but unfortunately, I find them very uncomfortable. Stiff, hard to move. Can’t beat a nice pair of breeches an old pair of Parlantis for comfort!

Don’t be sorry, he’s living his best life and after switching to combined driving, so am I!
