Bring back full chaps!

Mine came out last year. They’re 20 years old and I’m definitely not the same size as I was back then… but I stuffed myself in those puppies and was super happy.

If anyone wants to fume a bit, my mother got her suede full chaps when she was 16. She wore them until she took a riding break (“to have two children,” she says) and then let me use them as a teenager because they were just sitting around in the house. Then, when she retired and came back to riding, she wore them again.

Her chaps from age 16.

They still fit.

(Either last year or the year before the original zippers broke and she couldn’t find a cobbler who was interested in that project so I got her half chaps. But if the zipper worked, they’d still fit today.)

I’ll bet you could send them to Journeyman in Middleburg if you want them resurrected with new zippers.

I should have thought of that. Wonder what she wants for Hanukkah this year?

Thanks!

You’re welcome!

I bet we could have elastic panels put in them like my half chaps and boots have, because this many years later I need some flex!

I would imagine Journeyman could do that, too.

They’ve repaired my favorite halter three times. So far. Knock wood. Lol.

I think I still have a picture of that pair… somehow labeled Jive Chaps.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

They were so awesome, they sounded blingy but in reality it was just flashes of bling amidst earth tones

I’ve since then put my color coordination skills towards driven dressage outfits and fancy hats. Similar themes apply.

Still wearing my Journeyman chaps every day. Over 25 years old. New zippers once and patches inside the calves and I get compliments on them all the time. Comfortable, protective and I think I look better in them than boots and breeches.

My daughter shows Western and for the Horsemanship classes her black chaps have an elastic panel. They’re the suede (not microsuede) ones by Hobby Horse. And you can buy extender panels that zip into their chaps if you need even a bit more room.

She has a Ranch horse and uses the black chaps for IHSA shows. In AQHA ranch, it’s ch*nks, hers are beautiful, custom made, and very adjustable.

I was just at Congress and I saw both chinks (w rommel reins for vaquero style, and shotgun chaps.

Well, shit. I drive and ride dressage, I have not one earthly reason* to drag those chaps out of the closet and spend money on them.

'* Until now.

This has me thinking too…I was just eyeing up my full chaps wondering if the extender panel would work…I freaking love those things…

I’m also still rocking a 20-25 year old pair of Journeymans.

I have a pair of Journeyman full chaps that I adore. I think I got the grown up pair in 2008ish? when I had the money and I stopped growing. Black with grey snakeskin trip and purple piping. Have my initals in diamond on the rear strap. Freaking memories. I had a pair of matching half chaps made too. Thought I was hot stuff then.

I use them in the winter and got so many comments on them over the years, with older riders it has always been something like oh I miss mine or a blast from the past. They are wind proof, they are warm, and they stickkk when my young horses get a blow of cold wind up their butts on a frosty morning.

You forgot the Hampa boots and the mushroom helmet. I am OLD what happened?!!

I miss my full chaps, Tenney’s is close by, but I live in Florida now so it’s hard to justify a pair when I probably would not wear them often in the weather here.

I have been told by saddle fitters that Chaps actually can damage Calfskin, not sure if anyone can confirm if they’ve used them long term.

It seems everything damages calfskin
