Bring back full chaps!

I find it sort of remarkable that the saddles have gotten so much more expensive and also so much more fragile in the same time. :woman_shrugging:

kinda makes me feel better about being poor and riding in old stubbens and passiers

Three of my saddles are calf. I ride in jeans sometimes and use my chaps in the winter. I think my newest saddle is a 2020, which is my Antares dressage saddle and knock wood, no serious issues with the calf. My oldest is my 09 Childeric monoflap jump. No issues with the seat or splitting. I care for them pretty well, but idk no issues with the chaps on my calfskin yet.

That’s a really good point. I wonder what it would cost to get custom, English, full chaps these days. The silicone full seat breeches tend to give me rubs if I ride too many in a row in them. The pants stick to the saddle, but the stretch in the pants makes the fabric move against my leg. Chaps have that structural integrity that keeps you attached to the saddle. I ride a few groggy horses and it’s getting chilly out.

I was riding with a barn mate last night and she had lovely full chaps on! I think I may need to look into buying some in the near future! Where do you think the best place to look is these days?

I was reading on the Eventing Forum and someone posted a link for something else but I perused and found this:

I would love a pair but I also remember why I prefer breeches with some comments on this thread

Since this thread has been revived, heads up. There’s two pairs of “rescued” Journeymen chaps on eBay in the sub $30 range.

They look rather sad and the seller’s only given the inseam length but lord, they look like they need a soft landing. (I’m already sporting a rescued pair that fit a little loose here and there but I think are lucky, lol … plus I have GOT to dial back the idiot spending so, it’s somebody else’s turn to post bail).

Several pairs, cheap, on shopgoodwill too

I just had a pair made with no fringe but my name embroidered on the back of them and I paid $490 for them. I figured they will last me longer than a pair or two of tall boots (hopefully).

Love these! This is almost exactly what I’m looking to get made! I have to make an appointment to get fitted next week!

Speaking of full chaps with the name on the back. This picture cracked me up.

Who made yours?

I love my full chaps. Had a pair made maybe 2 winters ago by Larocque Chaps for around $700 with fringe and initials which I thought was reasonable. Lovely quality and easy to work with remotely!

These are gorgeous. Would also love to know who made them - my 20 year old journeymans are still in pristine condition but there’s no way possible I could even get the zipper over my calf these days :sob:

I had Graham Nicholson based in Ontario Canada make them. He does virtual fittings so you don’t need to be local. He is on Facebook

I’m asking Santa for a pair of custom chaps. I’ll post them if he comes through.
