Brush Bomb Fail

Tried using brush bombs for the first time today. They were about the size of a filbert, or maybe a little bigger but not much. I used three in a bucket of water, tossed in the brushes and let them do their magic. Well the cosmic forces were not with me because they utterly failed. They were in the water for a couple of hours and, while less groddy, they were still pretty dirty. Should they soak overnight?

The brushes are in the dishwasher.

What’s a brush bomb?

It’s a little ball of soap type ingredients that is supposed to clean brushes just by soaking them, no agitation needed. Some people swear by them, however, I’m not one of them.

Would OxyClean work? Or perhaps hydrogen peroxide & baking soda with a squirt of Dawn? The latter takes skunk smell off animals & people. Seems like it should be able to degunk brushes.

I came to this thread hoping it was about bombs for brush aka unwanted shrubberies. I see I was very, very wrong.

There seem to be recipes, that you wouldn’t expect to clean a brush;
Equine Brush Bombs - Simply drop one in a bucket of hot water with dirty brushes, let soak, scrub and rinse well. Made with Tea Tree and Eucalyptus Essential Oils, which are known to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and disinfecting properties.
Eight bombs per package.Paraben Free. Phthalates Free. Sulfate Free.

Then these which are sold out;

Is the dishwasher and washing machine ok for natural bristle brushes?

They don’t seem to have suffered to much damage from the dishwasher but then, they’re not banging around the washing machine.

Me 3!

OP:
I wash brushes with horse laundry*.
Then air(sun)dry.
They come out really clean.

*after a load of blankets or saddle pads, I do a load of barn towels. Picks up any hair left behind.

I can’t imagine washing my brushes in the dishwasher - do you presoak? How much goo is all over your dishwasher when done?

It hasn’t damaged mine.

No residual goo. They were presoaked in the bucket with the brush bomb.

I shall tentatively try this. I hope I don’t regret it. lol

Having killed a nice knife and a cutting board (both with wood parts) by washing them in the dishwasher, I would never feel comfortable washing a wood backed brush in the dishwasher.

The ones I use are huge. At least the size of a bath bomb. I also use hot water. It works ok but not sure I’ll buy more when I’m out. I leave them soak for a couple hours.

I will say it doesn’t take much effort , but def not as good as the dishwasher or washing machine.

same - I get by fine by tossing them in a bucket of warm water with dawn dish soap for a few minutes - careful to not oversoak.

Probably if I had some really nice Haas brushes I wouldn’t use the dishwasher, mine are mostly the Oster brand which came out pretty clean.

@BatCoach, that is how I have cleaned mine too. Dawn dish soap or Oxy Clean soak in a bucket and then rinsed well.
