Burghley

I’m surprised they are re-playing the falls. Buck’s was scary, the horse rolled over him and his foot was stuck briefly.

I didn’t really make the connection with the course designer, but yeah, it’s like he’s said “cool, we have these pins that will break, now we can make the fences even harder.”

And finally someone makes the time! (Piggy stays on 26.9)

Did you watch Piggy? That is why US riders are sent to Europe.

And another pin goes, this time for Dan Jocelyn.

Those pins have saved many, many from falling today.

So happy for Piggy!!! If anyone deserves to win this, it’s her.

That was an amazing ride by Piggy French. To finish on her dressage score.

Piggy French is my hero.

wsmoak, I’ll never forget his Red Hills fence with the mice heads sticking out of the cheese. That whole course was awful. Thankfully we have the frangible fences or we’d probably have multiple horse or rider deaths.

And down goes Zara Tindall.

I was thinking about the replaying too. In the US, anytime there’s a fall, typically the camera pans away quickly and there is no replay. Here, they’ve been rewatching the falls to slow it down and see how they happen. I don’t watch many European live streams, but is it the same with others?

Some of the most notable rider falls - doesn’t include names I don’t recognize …

Gemma Tattersall
Doug Payne
Buck Davidson
Zara Tindall

… and many more.

And we have not finished the day yet.

If that is not testimony that there is something wrong here, I don’t know how much else anyone needs.

It’s not fair to lump Zara’s fall in - the horse should have jumped and she maybe just trusted him too much.

In other news, that Piggy interview was the greatest thing ever. I would go back to full time to groom for someone like that!

???

What, because falls are standard? She’s a champion rider and she fell.

Wow, Jonelle can really sit a horse!

I thought she’d continue. It was only 11 penalties and the whole leaderboard is so messed up already.

Seems like everyone is realizing that retiring is safer than continuing if they have any issues. Smart decisions in my opinion given all the carnage seen so far.

Another retired. There is always going to be the occasional rider or horse mistake that causes a fall or refusal. That’s just the sport. But when you see more not finishing than completing, that’s a bit of a tell.

And champion riders fall all the time. The course didn’t take any part in that fall. She fell due to a run out where her horse was cheeky and she didn’t expect it.

The course is indeed awful (two combinations mainly) but Zara’s fall is not due to the course.
