Burghley

AAJ married the Princess Royal. Big difference.
Princess Anne decided to not have her children titled. That may have something to do with it as well.

Yup. It’s funny how that always works out. I can think of a number of young Americans who have shown up when they probably shouldn’t have, completed, and even occasionally done really well.

Ariel Grald
that girl has ice water in her veins.

But with all that said, I still don’t understand it and probably never will!

Has Julie Tew been discussed yet? Nice ride, great horse, amazing story. Both looked quite tired coming home, but happy tired with enough fuel in the tank to still cheerfully take on the last few obstacles. Really really nice horse.

Can anyone explain why some of the skinnies seem to catch riders/horses on a half stride? I was watching off and on so maybe I just caught a few weird ones by chance.

Yes, she’s totally on my radar now for one to watch. I was so moved by her interview, too. She really seemed to have worked so hard to develop her horse and sacrificed so much for her career.

I know. Just being snarky about CMP.ðƾ˜‰

Watching the replay since I couldn’t catch it live.

I must say, Buck has the how-to-get-your-hung-up-foot-out-of-the-stirrup-with-your-other-foot technique, down pat. Very impressive.
I’d be concerned, after seeing the x-ray of his clavicle the last time he broke it, that it can’t take much more damage. His clavicle though, so obviously his choice. I’m glad to hear he’s OK.

With respect to the sentiment expressed upthread regarding pulling riders off course if they seem overfaced or dangerous
it seems a bit of a slippery slope to do that as a routine matter. A rider must qualify to compete at the level, and if too many riders are getting to the level not sufficiently prepared, then the qualifications need to be tweaked. Burghley may be the biggest and baddest of the 5*s, but the FEI qualifications are the same for all of them.

Oh, I dunno, count me with those who think it looked like a bit of carnage. Four minutes into this video and Skelt’s fall looked like a very hard one for the horse, followed immediately by a much less drastic parting of company and scrabbling fall from Ginny Howe and her mount. https://livestream.com/burghley/events/8799670/videos/195974050

Then, just looking at the leaderboard, the percentage of eliminations and retired looks a bit dramatic, even for Burghley.
Burghley’s generally my fave four (now five) star to watch but I can see where both sides are getting their general impressions from.

Out of curiosity, contemplate:
At this year’s Grand National, 17.5% failed to complete the course because of rider or horse falls.
At this year’s Burghley, 20.3% failed to complete the course because of rider or horse falls.*

Eventing Nation quoted Phillips’ response to the lack of completion says** there was nothing wrong with the course, :
"In many ways, we had a weakened field today, and to be honest, that showed. "

The Prices came with 4 horses
only one horse completed. Gemma Tattersall and Izzy Taylor got eliminated on horses. Does Phillips feel these are weak riders?

At one point during the commentary Ian said there was a fence that he never would have placed at its location and that the course designer might unconsciously be making more difficult combinations thinking that that frangible pins will compensate.

*assuming I totaled the numbers correctly from the live stream.
** seems more like rubbing some salt in the wounds of anyone who didn’t finish, none of whom have publicly criticized him yet and some of whom had horses who might be injured from falling. Classless and smug.

After watching the XC I’m torn. Some of the rider falls shouldn’t have happened - they were jumped out of the tack, or just didn’t think their horses were going to react that way. Some combinations didn’t look ready but how do you prepare for the likes of Burghley? It is a big, bold, tough course.

If XC is reduced in size, haters are going to call it a glorified dressage competition. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Would increasing the time to get around make it ‘safer’?

Scotty was as diplomatic as possible while saying exactly that those jumps should not have been there. I agree that Phillips was relying on the pins rather than designing fairly. Phillips admitted that the gates rode worse than he thought because the pins didn’t activate. Well, they shouldn’t have needed to so frequently.

You’re also spot on regarding the field. Dan Jocelyn called the course with all the huge oxers relentless. Phillips knew it was a European Championship year, it’s not a secret.

The horses don’t deserve this. Even when the pins broke a lot of horses had hard hits and confidence-shattering jumps or half-jumps. The cumulative effect of the course was a punishment to many horses today.

I noticed a difference this year in the riding.

It seemed to me that too many riders continued on when they were riding badly and/or when their horse was obviously overwhelmed, when a better rider would have known to retire (as several did).

Glad I watched the replay and not the live stream. Well done to those who made it around.

The time seemed tough and the fences came up so quickly.

Chris Talley didn’t present. James Sommerville failed the vet. Santiago Bay and Carry On Bobby Boy passed on second attempt.

Watch while you are waiting. Very obvious admiration for Mark Phillips shown here.

I really can’t recommend watching that little interview sesh I posted on page 18 of this thread with Pippa Ollie and CMP.

I cant tell if it was the riding or the course that caused the bad riding so to speak.

I agree they were relying on pins which should not be the purpose of the pins, otherwise we are just Showjumping and teaching our horses the jumps fall down when, they don’t always.
