Burghley

Yay, they’ve added it!

Use the drop Down menu at the top- order of SJ.

Yes Chris posted on IG that the horse is sore in his stifle, so he chose to withdraw. Very sad for them, they’re one of my favorite pairs.

the times are slightly skewed. It sez sj to start at 4:40 am eastern daylight time, I think that is right, but according to my clocks here in the midwest, one hour later, it actually started around 5:30 ish. I ended up turning on Radio Burghley so I wouldn’t miss it. However, I had it so low, I couldn’t really hear. They were interviewing Harry Meade, and I heard him say something about Fair Hill becoming a 5*. SJ started around 5:30 here, so that was off by about an hour. Now a break till 2:30 pm. Who knows when that will actually start. I was hoping to watch before I trundle off to church.

You can’t trust the British eventers to be remotely intelligent or informed about safety. 80% of them are still riding dressage in ridiculous looking top hats instead of helmets, even thought their own gold medal winning pure dressage champion wears a Helmet. They must think Charlotte is a wimp. Although Ollie at least is wearing a helmet these days.

I do take their point about the continental events with course designers that surprise the horses with jumps around hidden corners and bad distances that tax them mentally but also agree with you that those open rail white overs and corners and gates were unfair as well, in a different way. It doesn’t have to be either or. Those overs could have been ascending and not white and the corners could have been more narrow or not in combination like they were. Relying on the frangible is a dangerous proposition.

What’s happened to the SJ live stream? It started at 6:40 EST and now it’s off air.

I think 7 horses went. Anyway, the rest will go at 2:30 British time. Not sure what time that is here.

Mine never even showed up! Was supposed to start at 11:40 GST, but it’s that time now and it’s not even on the air…

ETA… ahhh dang, forgot about BST.

Quaint British streaming. 2:30 is 9:30 EST here.

Yay! You can re-watch the AM showjumping at http://livestream.com/burghley/events/8799667/videos/196001103 . :encouragement:

Well, I woke up at 3 due to a raging thunderstorm. Couldn’t go back to sleep and I thought, ‘hmm, it’s about time for the jog.’ so I fired up the 'puter, and -no jog. I refreshed and refreshed, but no dice. So I crawled back to bed. Couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got out again at about 3:25, and it was going strong. I started the replay, as I only saw about 10 horses go, and it started AFTER Will Coleman went. One thing I did notice. Now ther snaps are just a second in time, but the only ones I saw on a relatively long lead were Ollie who trotted up his horse ON THER BUCKLE, and Dan Joyslyn. Piggy seemed to have a really tight hold on VK’s head. And James Sommerville, who did not pass the second jog had a tight grip on his horses head. The commenters noticed that and said when he was called back a second time, he should have let his horse trot freely.

This to the nth power.

It’s not just dangerous. It’s against the basics tenets of the sport.

Horses should not be going into jumps thinking ‘size XL showjump, rails come down’. XC fences should be seen as solid fences and the clips/pins should be there for emergency only.

Crashing through the fence should not be seen as a viable option, as it was yesterday.

That horse knocked the crap out of its hind leg on the second maltings oxer and indeed held its leg up for a stride or two. I’m not at all surprised to hear he scratched.

Interestingly when Chris shared a video on his feed that another person had edited together of his round, that fence, and the horse’s reaction to it, had been edited out.

Usually the jumping is in two sessions at Burghley. AM and PM. This year AM was only 8 riders. PM is the top 24. Hence they did not need to start earlier and there was plenty of time left for the donkey parade!

That horse seems to hang stifles a lot. Remember that scary drop into the water in Kentucky?

I saw that on the live feed too and was surprised that he continued on immediately, without perhaps even trotting for 10 seconds to see if the horse was “just” stung or really hurt. the horse looked sore to my inexperienced eye, all the way to the next corner and thought, that horse was all heart to continue jumping.

Yup. I seem to recall a lot of chatter, including by those on this Burghley post criticizing the course, that the Kentucky course this year was not tough enough.

Decided to watch Woodge’s fall, to understand what happened. Incredibly lucky and made me tear up watching them both walk back to the barn. Amazing. She had someone looking after her on that one…

I was also really impressed with her riding out there. Her first trip about Kentucky I was there and remember her being really scrappy (Scrappy Cappy!) and made me nervous to watch. She has clearly matured and improved. Her stint in Germany has proved successful, and am sad it is ending with such a scary tumble at Burghley.

Glad to hear the French riders are wearing black armbands to honor the memory of the French eventer killed yesterday. I know it’s just a symbolic gesture, but it’s nice that it doesn’t go completely forgotten when all eyes are on this event.
