Burghley

IIRC, 81 horses passed the jog so half should have gone today. I saw part of it. IDK if I will get up at 3 am, to watch Liz ride. I am sure it will be good. Was it Pippa who had an error of course? Without that, she would easily be in first. Are there any Germans running? Or did they all compete at Luhmellen? I think Michi and Ingrid aren’t here, so we will have to count on Ollie to give us a GREAT score. That leaves a bit of breathing room for everyone else. My opinion only. Yours may differ.

Thanks!!

You are correct. It is a small Burghley field this year as the European championships ran last weekend. Many of the big guns ran there instead.

67 horses started and passed the jog for this year.

Pippa (and Ludwig, and Imogen Murray) did have an error of course. A shame as you are right that she would be leading without.

No Germans. They don’t actually have a very deep squad, and as the host country for the European championships last weekend they were allowed to run 12 combinations there. That doesn’t leave anything left for Burghley, unfortunately.

Will the top hats ever die? What ever happened to not showcasing riders with top hats on in the media…boo. If we want sponsors and to be seen as athletes, maybe not wearing a friggin century old hat style that’s totally unsafe would be a good start.

Not sure she would have been in 1st? I do not believe you would subtract 2 from her score (so 29.9 wouldn’t become 27.9)
I believe 2 marks got subtracted from each judge (so 184 from judge at E would have been 186 before the error).

So if you add the 3 judges scores up - Eliza had 556.5, Tim/Sarah had 549.
I believe Pippa would have had 546.5 + 6 (2 x 3 judges) = 552.5 (29.2 vs. 29.9)
So I think would have been 2nd without the errors.

You can watch everything here; https://livestream.com/accounts/28640632/events/8766581

All videos to date and live. Even the gun dog display. You probably won’t suffer from the overuse of the LRBHT website either.

Impressed with how well conditioned the U.S. horses are looking this year. Tight Lines in particular, but they’re all looking extremely fit.

Major improvement over prior years from what I can remember.

Safety concerns aside, the more I get used to seeing riders in helmets, the more ridiculous I think top hats look. They belong in a period drama, not a modern day athletic competition.

And how are other sports supposed to take equestrian sports seriously when we compete dressed up like freaking Mr Peanut?

I read that one rider (the leader maybe?) is wearing her top hat in honor of her grandmother. I am well aware that safety is more important, but at least she has a reason.

Michi has said it is Tradition. I agree I like the look of the helmets now. But as long as there is a choice… Besides, there is also a movement to do away with the gorgeous coats too. As far as other sports 'respecting us, when the gymnasts are constantly pulling their leotards(?) down to cover their butts, I wouldn’t worry about what the other disciplines think. Someone exceedingly tall like WFP or T Price, yeah, would look better in a helmet. I think the Brits and possibly the Germans would squawk if we pushed that rule.

Loved the commentary this morning. They are educational yet entertaining. Towards the end one of the guys was distraught because he thought the horse was black yet it was actually bay…he had me cracking up.

Ill definitely be watching tomorrow morning as well and I will even get up at god awful hour o clock to watch all of XC. The course looked super fun…like, not fun for me, but you know - fun for them ;).

Love seeing the live scores on the screen, too. At one point I saw there was over 6.5k people watching! Kentucky needs to step it’s game up, it can’t be that challenging.

I enjoyed the commentary as well! It was pretty nice to have the scores come up as the movements were performed.

Also the Bundeschampionat is this weekend, which is the big young horse championship in Germany. Off the top of my head, at least 1 squad member is there (Sandra Auffarth).

I was watching this morning at noticed they had cut the center line and X into the grass in the dressage ring. To me that is an absolute cheat as coming into the ring and making sure you are coming down the center line is tough.

it isn’t really a cheat, as it applies the same to all. What it DOES show, is how exact the rider is. The other thing is, it shows exactly where you halt.

Really? I wish they would do that at my starter trials!:lol:
