Very happy for you and for him!
I wanna see the pictures too and almost posted the other night that I have a horse that does the tilt as a stress reliever. He’s probably the smartest horse we’ve ever had, knows enough to be stressed for his own welfare lol If ever a horse was allowed to be stressed I would think that TB was in the right place for it where he was! Yay!
Oh, SQUEAL!!! So excited to see him progress! Thank you & congratulations to both of you.
Although the “loads to Mexico” break my heart every time, I love the success stories! Can’t wait to see photos of that sweet boy! So far I’m SO happy with my girls that came from Bowie!
Yeah! Congratulations! Looking forward to being able to virtually watch his progress.
Congrats! He looks like such a neat horse, I am thrilled you got him!
He has such a bright future ahead of him now, please share it with us when you can.

I have no new information about him - they just know he’s a 4yo Thoroughbred gelding - and I haven’t named him from afar.
Bowie is across the state from me. He’s in quarantine for nine or 10 more days, then a young horse trainer friend who lives not too far from Bowie will pick him up and put 30 days on him, to see what we have. If he’s suitable for me, then great. If he is not, the young trainer friend is confident he can pass him on to any number of cowboys who just need a using horse. We’ll break even.
He’s cute, right?
AFAIK, if he’s 4 if he’s registered, he should have a microchip so you might be able to track down more information.
The Bowie guy said no tattoo and no microchip. Wah!
That sucks, but it might not hurt to double check when you can.
He is very cute and looks to be a sweet guy. I admit to feeling deflated when I read you might “pass him on to any number of cowboys”.
Absolutely!
Geez, why? I want him as a riding horse - I’ve been looking for a long time - and every finger and toe is crossed that it will work. If it doesn’t work out for me, there’s a Plan B. Working cowboys need using horses and, like most of the rest of us, can’t afford a $15,000 horse. They are often on the lookout for a decent $2000 - 5000 horse. Why would being a using horse for a working cowboy be a source of deflation?
Because the working cowboys I know are very hard on their horses and when they can’t work anymore they’re back at the auction. But I don’t know every cowboy in the world so I’ll keep my fingers crossed that he eventually finds a forever home.
Well, as mentioned, the fervent hope is that his forever home is with me.
Fingers crossed all works out. He has such a gentle eye despite running through auction, seems to be a horse that’ll have a lot of try. Can’t wait to see him plumped up.
I hope so too, I’m a sucker for happy endings.
If we’re being honest, my reaction was similar . Maybe it was just the way it was worded? No cowboy I’ve ever known has valued Thoroughbreds, in fact more often than not they call them crazy and worthless dog food (that’s a direct quote, BTW - not something I just made up). So “passing him along to the cowboys” sounds a lot like unloading him onto someone who is just going to use him up and throw him away again.
I know you’ve got a trainer lined up and I wouldn’t step on toes, but if he doesn’t work out and you need some help making connections to more sporthorse-knowledgeable homes I’d be happy to help out if needed.
Oh, y’all, I’m sorry. I dashed off that post because I was in a hot hurry at the moment. I don’t think I’ve communicated well. In retrospect, I see how it could come across as blithe or bluff, like I’d just sell him cheap to whomever came along.
That’s not the case.
I’m on cloud nine about this horse. Can’t wait to meet him.
Heinz, I appreciate your offer to help with sport horse connections and in the unhappy circumstances that re-homing comes to pass, I’ll certainly remember this.
The trainer is a young guy whom I’ve known all his life. He’s super talented and a real deal cowboy - worked at the Pitchfork, apprenticed for Buster Welch and spent a couple years working with other well known cutters. He’s out on his own now. He grew up ranching and he continues to daywork as it’s great for colts he’s training.
My point: he knows a bunch of folks who use horses for a living. If the horse needs to be moved on, he’s got an audience for that and can get the horse into a role that’s suitable and into the hands of someone who needs a budget-friendly animal. That’s all I meant. We’re not talking weekend yahoos or use-em-up types. I promise.
