Buying from Bowie “kill pen”?

Good tip! I’ll check them out if I don’t find a “something” at Bowie :joy:

See if the community took turns helping one horse to get into a good home, makes a difference to that one and we all know it made it to a good home. Community rescue using different resources? Some helpers, homes and funders? Just a thought :joy:

MNick, look at Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue - they have satellite operations in Texas. $350 for a single, $600 for a pair.

All sorts of donkeys, ages, colors, backgrounds etc.

Have you looked at Bluebonnet rescue? They might have donkeys.

You made me look. So glad I do not need another horse! He’ll sell fast and has the potential to be a stunner.

I need about two less horses than I already have :joy: but oof, he will have a presence when he grows up!

Why a horse like this gets dumped is beyond me. Anyone with a trained eye would pay a decent price for him.

While the chestnut is adorbs, and he seems very sweet, that bay DHH has the moves and I like his topline a little more than the red one. Seriously. Anyone looking for a sport horse type? That bay DHH has just enough white trim and some good suspension at the trot. Me likey.

Yes, and their feet actually look good, too. Makes you wonder how two nice youngsters ended up there. Thank goodness I don’t have the family ranch any more!

Oh, mares and foals in the background. :sleepy:

Deal. You take the bay, I’ll take the chestnut  With the chestnut’s lackadaisical video I don’t think we really got a fair chance to compare which has better gaits. Bay is definitely at a more developed, balanced stage today but that’s 2yo’s for you! He was kind of a bulldozer in hand for a very experienced handler, which is a small red flag for me.

I have 4 redheads…some would say I’m partial to the color.

As to how they ended up there, my guess would be that they are of Amish breeding origins and probably came from another sale, herd dispersal, etc.

I think the fellow said the sorrel was a cryptorchid?I may have misunderstood him.
If the other one is hard to get, that may be a bit of a serious operation and the one selling him didn’t want to go there?

Yeah, he definitely said and provided video evidence of the chestnut having one descended testicle.

He’s still very cute and I do really appreciate a very food motivated horse (of course, my guy about pitched a fit yesterday when he realized his field was getting fed and I was riding him away from the food. Nevermind that I’d given him food before I tacked him up…)

Yep. That risk doesn’t concern me too much, personally - in my experience it’s not a terribly expensive surgery ($12-1500 in 2022). But “expensive” is relative, if you aren’t normally using a vet to geld your colts anyway it probably sounds like a fortune!

   I just spent all day yesterday competing in ranch classes. Somehow I don’t think a DHH horse of any age or demeanor is in my future.

But I’m happy to enable others to embrace their curated selection of Bowie horses!

Alas, so am I. I only share the ones I like because I hope to talk some good COTH’er into buying them, because I already have too many and want to live vicariously. :joy:

I’m actually really surprised the bay is still available this morning. He’s big, he’s already gelded (yes, title says COLT but if you look at the info below and listen to the sound it/he says GELDING), and he’s cheap for what they usually sell DHH for at Bowie. Usually that kind of horse gets snapped up quick.

So I just watched the bay one’s video 4940 Big Pretty Dutch Harness Colt - Bowie Livestock
And, UMMMM, he is a very nice mover! Suspension, lovely swing, and not too much knee action to offend any hunter sensibilities. I LIKE.

Do it. You know you want to.

No more babies for me!

You guys are bad influences. I went looking on the Bowie site. This poor filly looks so sweet but I don’t know if those legs are fixable :frowning:

You are kind to consider her, but personally, I would not buy her if I wanted a riding horse. That’s how her bones are formed, which is unfortunate.
