Can a foal be rejected after three months..?

Agree would love to see pictures as well!!

One BO put a leather halter on a foal. But the halter had been on another foal right before she switched it. The mare nearly killed her foal when she smelled the other foal’s scent on the halter.

WOAPE I love that you keep this thread updated

I want to see a new picture of him too!!

Thanks for the replies guys. Today, we got a call that he could barely stand…poor guy is exhausted after one day back with the herd…few of the big boys had some new scrapes so mabe it was a crazy night…anyway, woape and his pony buddy are spending the night in the box…allowing him some much needed rest…I guess it is normal after all the stress etc…we were just there and he is tired but eating well.

Would love to show some photos but don’t know how to add them…?

Carl

I’ve just put some photos on his facebook page:

Love the pictures, he is stunning. All horses should be so lucky as to have such a good and caring owner

Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate that.

I have so much to learn about caring for horses - this forum and its members has been fantastic in helping me out with that…but while I am learning every day, what I can provide woape with is plenty of love and attention…he will never be short of that.

Did you ever post his bloodlines? I can’t remember if you did

Just curious

No, his dam is a Palomino paint horse (Smiling Little Klara) and the sire is a chestnut QH (April Doc Bony)

Oh he is just the most adorable little palomino gelding!! I LOVE the picture of you laying down with him! <3

Thank you, and yes…that photo is special…it was one of the most amazing moments ever for me…he lay like that for about an hour…snoring away loud as you like and slobbered all over my neck…priceless!

Adorable!! What a wonderful friendship the two of you share!

Thanks Didi. Truly, I treasure the bond we have developed.

woape has been very wobbly the past few days…almost struggling to stand…yesterday, we did a short video…today, vet watched it…said it shows signs of pssm…he will be on site later…I will order tests…have to find out what this is…

PSSM, or EPM? Very different, and the symptoms would be much more like EPM than PSSM.

PSSM is also not likely to affect a horse that young and to that degree, even if he’s homozygous for it.

Assuming you mean EPM, visit www.epmhorse.org. It’s got really great information on what it is, and be sure to read through the testing and treatment sections, as there are tests that aren’t worth doing anymore, and tests that are much more reliable in indicating active infection vs just exposure.

This afternoon, we called about ten vets…all were busy…our regular vet (regarded as one of the best in the country) is due to come out in a few hours, so waiting to hear his opinion after checking him over.

About six weeks ago, around the same time as the choking incidents (twice, consecutive days), we were out walking with woape and he stumbled slightly a few times, so we returned to the pasture immediately. Since then, I did a few fly twitch tests, leg crossover tests etc after reading about neurological issues…every time, and I even did this 2 days ago, he seemed fine with good responses.

His appetite is good…he was even still trying to eat when he was lying flat…just hope this is nothing too serious…

Jingles to you and Woape! Please keep us posted!

The vet has just seen woape. After his examination, he does not think it is pssm…but does not know what it is…named three possibilities (post-op ataxia, Lymes and a possible nerve issue in the back). Bloods were taken and will go to the lab tomorrow morning. woape is now in the box with his pony buddy, eating and the vet has given him some meds…told me he is stablilised. It is late here now (past midnight) so will update when I have more news…he better be OK…he just better…

I still don’t understand why he would have thought PSSM in the first place  Are you SURE he didn’t mean EPM, and has that been taken into account?

What meds did you get?

Mad jingles!!!

I think the pssm thing came from his lineage (QH and paint)…and it is also known that in this part of the world, there is a selinium deficiency in the soil, so horses can be affected by that. The owner of the food store has many clients with horses who have pssm - she has a special diet plan that I believe helps them out (fat supplement etc if I remember correctly).

I asked the farm/area owner who was on site when the vet visited earlier, to mention the EPM thing too. Would he not have shown poor response to recent fly twitch tests etc…? I know it is something really basic but read it was a good indicator for neurological issues…

The meds were unknown to me at this stage as I was not there at the time of administration.
