Can a foal be rejected after three months..?

JB, I didn’t even know that he had received the treatment until my wife received an SMS on the 29th November…does that date mean we should be safe by now…? To be honest, I wasn’t expecting any treatment to be given to him before they had consulted with us…I know the vet is well respected and has been trained internationally…but I don’t even know if he was there…will certainly make sure that nothing is given to woape without me knowing in future…

Happy New Year to one and all!

Just to update, woape has recently moved in with the herd full time - previously, he was spending the nights with a pony in a smaller area. Seems a couple of the horses are keeping an eye on him, so hopefully all will be fine. We were there last night, along with the owner of the site who served up an interesting hay mix for the horses which really helped them focus on something other than the loud bangs and flashing colours in the distance. Started to snow around midnight - it is quite cold here now (-2c/27f) but woape has a lovely thick winter coat which I’m sure will keep him warm

Best to you all…and your horses…for 2016

Carl

Happy New Year, Carl! Glad to hear all is well. My baby is a bundle of fuzz right now, too! It will be fun to see what’s underneath when he sheds out in the Spring! Best wishes as you continue your wonderful adventure!

Time for an update…and as usual, a question or two…

woape has settled into life at the new place quite well - it has been 3 months now since the move. One of the other Palominos at the new place is keeping an eye on him which is great to see. The vet saw him for the first time a few weeks back, he said wow…what a beautiful young guy…and was amazed at how well behaved he is. Thankfully, the check up went well and he seems fine…but, the site where he is now run regular screens for worms…and he was one of the three (from 22 horses on site) that has something…two different types in his system…the girl who runs the place said her 2 year old arrived in similar condition and she fought it for around twelve months with a combination of dewormers and herbal mixes provided by a lady who runs an animal health foods store near us (she also owns the pony who woape “roomed with” when he first arrived)

Last week, he started the herbal mixture - after a few days adjusting to the taste  so we are hoping that given time, he will clear up nicely. We were told he likely got these bugs through his mother’s milk. The herbal course (mix of garlic, herbs etc) lasts for 5 weeks and is repeated after six months or so.

The other foal at the site, a month or so younger but bigger than woape, is due to be castrated in the near future…and we’ll be having the conversation very soon too…:frowning: which is where my question comes in…

I have read a little about when is the best time etc (found that spring / late autumn is best…less flies and chance of infection…) but was wondering if his current health issue should play a part in making the decision…? Any thoughts or comments appreciated as usual…you guys have been very helpful to us as newbies in the horsey kingdom

Thanks,

Carl

Regarding the worms : I would do a screen with my own vet and treat as needed. The herbal course… Treat the worms properly, with poop management/disposale and be done with it. Re-screen.

Regarding the castration : better a little too soon than too late! But your vet is the best person to suggest the right time for your horse considering its health. I personaly prefer if it can wait for late automn because of the colder temps.

Thanks for the reply alibi,

He did receive chemical treatment…and has had this fairly regularly since birth…the herbal mix is designed to create an environment the worms don’t thrive in…and gradually get shut of the little -----!

The woman who runs the site doesn’t do the screening herself, samples are tested by the vet.

Thanks,

Carl

To my knowledge there are no studies, at all, showing any herbals or anything like that to be effective in handling equine parasites. Will some of the remedies get some worms? Most likely.

Were the worms he has, strongyles and ascarids? That would be the most likely.

What chemicals, or brands, do you have over there?

Thanks JB. He did receive chemical treatment…and will always receive that when required and suggested by the vet…the herbal mix is, as I have been told, a beneficial supplement that only includes natural ingredients.

The vet is internationally trained and has a good reputation over here. Regarding the chemicals, woape has had the following:

1st - IVERMECTIN
2nd - FENBENDAZOLUM (dbl dose, as suggested)
3rd - MOXIDECDIN (nearly seven months old and careful measurement of dose)
4th - FENBENDAZOLUM (recent treatment)

Yes, the bugs are indeed Ascarids and Strongyles.

Thanks,

Carl

Ok, that’s good. Make sure your fenbendazolum is always double-dosed - that’s what’s effective against ascarids. The ivermectin and moxidectin might still be, but there’s a growing resistance so you want your bases covered.

Thanks JB!

Don’t let a few worms get in the way of a lower lobotomy!!!

Unless he is terribly compromised physically from parasite overload, the castration should not be an issue

Thanks Silly Mommy…

The vet said something similar earlier this week, also said he personally would wait a little as woape is still young and small. The other foal at the site, although younger than woape, is much bigger and has already shown signs of wanting to do the bad thing on the good hoof…so he is being scheduled soon I believe.

Just posted a new thread - little bit worried about him at the moment…

Thought I would share this so you can see him…

One lady who has a few horses at the site made and posted this today, woape is the colt playing with the black pony:

He’s adorable! What a fun personality! The pasture looks beautiful, too. It looks like you have him in a good situation!

Thanks Didi!

Love the video. He looks adorable. Just caught up on this thread and Im glad I did. A great read!

Good luck with him and I hope hes feeling better soon.

Many thanks for your kind words!

Today, woape went back onto the pasture with the herd - two and a half weeks after his gelding procedure. Fortunately, everything seems to have gone as well as it could have. I stayed over on the first night - he was watching me from the stall as I lay below him…then around 4am he was snoring away loudly  and flat out, which I was really glad to see. He had painkillers and only minimal swelling for two days, so probably as good as could be hoped for. First week, he was in the stall with nonstop company - an older male pony, who moved outside with woape for the next ten days or so to a smaller enclosure. Great to see him back on the pasture though…

And his colour…wow…his winter coat has all but gone now, leaving a beautiful caramel/biscuit shade palomino like when he was a baby…he looks stunning

Wonderful! So glad you were a responsible owner and had him gelded. Then, again, I had no doubt about your diligence toward Woape. You’ll have to let us see pictures soon!
