Can I throw a pity party?

So in the past couple weeks:

  1. My very sweet horse I brought home last winter after losing my old mare has been handed a possible cancer diagnosis. This horse came with a surprise pregnancy, then was NQR after foaling. After exhausting nearly everything, the vet feels pretty confident she has some sort of internal neoplasia and we’ll just keep treating the symptoms until she gets worse or better. She is on a battery of meds, plus Sucralfate, so it’s been a circus timing everything so they all work as they should.

  2. My donkey foundered on the still green winter grass. She sometimes gets a little footsore in the summer, but never this bad. We (me, vet, farrier) are still playing with options conservatively treating her, but I’m starting to worry we might be losing this time.

  3. Cancer mare from #1 came in with an eye ulcer last week. Nothing major, but annoying to treat, especially in this weather. The eye meds are freezing as soon as they leave the tube!

  4. This morning, I was giving my weanling one of her vaccine boosters. She has been so good for them up til now, but for whatever reason reared up today when the needle went in. Maybe the cold? Nothing terrible happened but now she has a nice hematoma to stress me out.

  5. My 17 year old homebred is currently colicking. I thought we got through the cold unscathed, but no. She is only mildly painful and the vet couldn’t find anything remarkable on exam, so we are in a holding pattern to see if she gets worse after the meds wear off. I’m so hoping we don’t need to go to the university, but it’s been such a weird colic.

The weather sucks, everything is 2x as hard in this cold, my kid is sick, all our Christmas plans were ruined between sick kid and sick horses. I had family pass away and now I need to fit in a funeral. A hose on my car burst today and who knows what that repair means.

Sorry to be so negative but I just need to vent. My usually supportive SO and family are so over the horse drama.

Massive jingles!

That’s a lot going on. I feel ya since I’m kinda in the same boat though mine aren’t animal related for the most part.

Star (dog ) spent most of November with uti’s and can’t figure out a cause.

Place I rent sold so I have to move. Paperwork drama relating to that.

And since I have to move maybe I should just move back to alberta where life is cheaper.

Moving at the end of the week then I can chill.

Again lots of jingles!

Many, many jingles. I’m sorry to hear about the mare. I’d been lurking through the surprise pregnancy saga, and all its ups/downs, joys/sorrows. Did you end up keeping the Bogo foal?

Uhhhhh that is a LOT going on at once! I think you have every right to a pity party. I’m so sorry to hear about the new mare and your family member, and I hope the donk and homebred pull through okay. Update when you can? Will be jingling for you! The good news is that by later this week the highs will be in the 50s.

Thanks guys. When my mare started colicking today, I thought it was going to put me over the brink. Thankfully, with meds of board she has remained comfortable tonight (touch wood).

@Polydor I am so sorry about your dog and impending move. Jingles for your pup and fingers crossed moving goes as smoothly as it can. It is never fun.

@B_and_B Yes, Bogo is still here. She has had a good, uneventful spell, although this month she has been full of piss and vinegar. She usually is such an easy going, agreeable foal. I don’t know if it’s the weather or what but she has been a handful lately. Hopefully it’s just a phase.

Wow, that’s a LOT.

Especially with the weather making even routine care difficult.

Jingling for you, your equids, your kid, your SO and your car.

Groan. Yes, you can throw a pity party. Sounds like not a very merry Christmas. And yes, it often seems to happen this way, multiple blows to the head all at once. Good luck coming your way.

Thanks again everyone. I usually have a good support network but I feel like they are over it. The past couple years have been crisis on crisis and I’m already not firing on all cylinders, then everything has seemed to go wrong at once this month.

Good news is the colic seems to be behind my mare, whatever that was about remains a mystery. The filly has a hard knot on her neck, but it’s cold and not painful. My wonderful DH repaired the hose on the car, just hoping it holds. The other mare and donkey seem no worse today. My kid is still sick as a dog, we went to the doctor yesterday and it’s just your standard cold and none of the worse stuff circulating. At least the temps have finally hit above freezing!!!

I’m off work this week so maybe I’ll get a chance to relax. My family has been mum on when the funeral arrangements may be; hoping they are not this week at this point.

we had one mare who at times of Ovulation would display the same signs as colic. it took us a few years to see the correlation which was confirmed by our vets

I hope that all this gets behind you quickly

Ugh, just wanted to share a   for you! I was just telling a friend yesterday that horses can definitely read calendars and clocks bc they are MASTERS of the worst possible timing!
