Can Openers--where can I get one that actually works?

I do not use electric can openers. My ancient can opener died of old age. The four different ones I have gotten from WalMart were all junk. They barely can cut open any cans & all broke in a month.

I am tired of struggling to open my cats’ can of food every morning. My cats are tired of it taking so long to open the can every morning.

Do good can openers even exist anymore? Or are they all pieces of sh**?

My cats & I thank you for any good info anyone can give.

PAMPERED CHEF! They have the most amazing can opener. Hubby and I used to fight over it, so we now have 2 - one for the dog food & one for the utensil drawer

Wow - I really have to ask what brand of cat food you’re feeding that requires a can opener. Even the cheapest of the cheap brands have pop-tops these days.

That said, I’ve had the same 2 manual can openers for over 30 years & they’re still going strong (probably because so many things are pop-top these days). I don’t think many appliance manufacturers are putting a lot of technology & thought into can openers since so many canned goods companies are going the pop-top route, but look into OXO products - they seem to do quality well.

I looked at the Pampered Chef site & they have a Smooth Edged Can Opener for $20. Is that the one? Pricey! Does it last? If it lasts forever, the price is worth it.

I have an OXO one and it’s been going strong for 3 years. I don’t use it every day though…

The Swingaway can openers are good - mine is going strong still 10 years old

Pampered Chef stuff comes with a lifetime guarantee - if it breaks they replace it

Get thee to a yard sale/flea market/estate sale/Goodwill at some point, and look for an OLD Swing-A-Way opener. The older ones are heavier than they look, and most will have red or white (here and there I’ve seen green) rubber coating on the handles.

An estate sale at an “older house” can yield WONDERFUL kitchen items. Most of our ahem elder folks knew to buy quality stuff that lasted, back when it WAS made to last!!

I had a Pampered Chef one, and I didn’t like it…If I remember correctly, it opens the can differently so there is no sharp edge, BUT you can’t use the cut top to drain the water in the tuna out, the cut top wouldn’t fit in right??? Because it cut a different way…Sorry I can’t describe it better, but I gave mine away-This was one I bought about 10 years ago.

Wow, I’m hanging onto my super reliable, old-as-dirt can opener for sure now. Had no idea the new ones were so crappy.

Oxo tends to make nice stuff, though. If I had to replace, I’d probably go with theirs. Might cost a little more, but should last a while.

Hmm, I got a semi cheap one from wally world…

But then again, mine tend to walk off before they break.
but resident Tunashark agrees, letting the cat wait for breakfast is unacceptable!

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a Kitchen Aid one! They suck! I have a great one, I have no idea what brand, though…I spotted it in a shopping cart in the Stop&Shop parking lot. Somebody had forgotten it, and I grabbed it right up!Lol

Everyone should have at least one manual can opener that works. It’s not just because you don’t want to use an electric, or don’t like them either. If you have a power outage it might be the only decent way to open cans after a storm that takes down the lines, and they don’t get fixed right away, after a hurricane (or the aftermath such as my place a few years ago), or other electical problem.

I thought I was the only one who had issues with can openers…The cheap ones are junk. I would go thru one a month…no seriously the cheap ones are not worth even looking at. Finally found an OXO and it has held up. The money I wasted on cheap ones…ughhhhhh

Wellness and Wysong, at least, do not have pop-tops.

My manual can opener just says “Swing-away” on it  It’s old, at least 15 years.

I would agree on the Oxo - everything else of theirs I’ve tried has been really good. Their garlic smasher is the only one that has held up.

And I agree, it’s not just cat/dog food that have soem pop tops - I don’t have any cans of beans/peas/string beans/spinach/etc that have pop tops

I also want to be able to open some of those cans if there’s no power and I am using a propane grill to eat

I have a wall mounted Swingaway down in the basement, works perfectly and is at least 45 years old. I have another hand held Swingaway in the barn, and it is on year 5…the hand held in the house disappeared. probably under the stove SIGH. They are good, and really the only ones that grip the rim of the tin properly, regardless of type. I did find a decent opener in the dollar store, of all places, but it isn’t much good on small tins. I really want a left handed can opener.

The older the better - our ‘camper’ opener is still the best.

Yup - removed the wall mounted Swingaway from the cottage kitchen when we sold it ;), and have a hand held “harvest gold” Swingaway that I bought over 30 years ago that is my “go to” can opener.

This past year moved back home for good after 4 years of junkets with the ex sig other - final furniture removing trip was 2 weeks ago and I saw his new electric can opener - and it already doesn’t work. Nyaah, nyah, nyah, nyaah nah.

I’ll never buy an electric one - used to handle insurance claims/lawsuits for some small appliance companies, and some of the cases I had to handle made that decision easy. :frowning:

Honestly, is there nothing that is not operated electrically - have we got to the stage that we cannot do anything manually?

Not that I plan to go back to handwashing dishes - love my D/W.

Uh - does NO ONE read previous posts??? Once again - look for OXo products. Their manual can openers (& other products) are wonderful - long-lasting quality, easy to use & clean, comfortable to use.

Does it have to be said for a 3rd or 4th time?

Swingaway. Bet you could pick up a couple at yard sales or Goodwill for nothing. My current one I’ve had since I graduated from college, 25 years ago.

Right now there are 15 used ones on Ebay. Grab them.

Wow, I had no idea Swingaway was so… popular! LOL I figured I had some obscure brand that just happened to have lasted me a while. I don’t EVEN have a clue where I got mine.
