Can we start a "safe" dogfood list?

My one goal today is to make sure I have my dogs a new food that, hopefully, isn’t going to make them ill. Who knew this would be such a tall order?

With this in mind, can people please post dog foods they feed that have not been recalled or killed large numbers of dogs in recent history.

Personally, I’m mostly looking for alternative protein sources, no lamb, beef, or chicken and I’m looking at Fromm at the moment, but what about Natural Balance or Before Grain? (Editing because I typed Natural Balance (DiaMOND!!), but meant Earthborn, I just couldn’t think of the name of it at the time…lol. Getting old sucks!)

I, like others I’m sure, will have to order any new food online, so posting websites with the best prices work too. What about Smartpaks?

What I’ve learned is that the only safe dog food is one you make at home. Barring that we’re working with less than complete information from the manufacturers. I was burned with Innova and guess what, Natural Balance is made at the Diamond facility so good luck with that. It’s a crapshoot.

Orijen or Acana.

My local pet food store is cheaper than any online place so I can’t help you with online ordering.

NO to Natural Balance - it is on the current recall list (made by Diamond).

Fromm is good and so is Before Grain.

We currently feed Earthborn Holistic kibble, Blue Buffalo canned, Holistic Select (Eagle Pack) kibble, and Fromm kibble. (5 dogs who are fed according to what agrees best with them as individuals, as well as their personal preferences ) All are rated high and have had no problems. Of course things change, companies are sold to the big corporations and all he!! breaks loose (as we’ve seen time and time again unfortunately.) But for now there are some excellent foods out there - we just have to research and find them!

Looking forward to other’s input on good (and safe) foods.

Acana was on one of the recall lists I saw I thought. Hhmm…

Where? Link?

This site is very useful: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/newpetfoodrecalls/

You can search for recalls back to 2007. Champion Pet, Acana and Orijen are not listed.

I’m pretty sure it was not. Acana is made by Champion Pet Foods who also makes Orijen (out of Canada).

You’re right about there being a problem with Acana, but I don’t know if it was recalled. There was a report from the FDA about an import refusal on Acana due to Salmonella being found in it:

http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/importrefusals/ir_detail.cfm?EntryId=144-4376281-3&DocId=1&LineId=5&SfxId=

This was from awhile ago - but still…

Champion Pet / Acana IS listed on the FDA Import refusal site due to salmonella.

Thank you. Yes, I think what I read was referring to that. I just knew that I had seen something when I was googling dog food names yesterday about Acana and made a mental note about it. I was trying to find it with my work computer, since my laptop is at home (with it’s browser history from yesterday), but have been busy with work (boo!) and hadn’t found it yet.

I searched for Champion and Acana and got nothing–how did you turn that up? I’m obviously missing something on the site!

I can’t take any credit for that - I saw it on another site that I was reading. It’s sometimes not easy to dig around on the FDA site (there are tons of pages to weed through). I did a lot of digging when my 2 (almost 3) dogs died from Nutro a few years ago.

From Champion’s FAQ on their website:

"Champion Petfoods is confident that all of our foods, including our ACANA Grasslands Dog, are 100% safe. We test all our products for Salmonella prior to shipping.

The FDA regularly examines and samples all food products entering into the USA. On January 31, 2011 the FDA concluded that a sample of ACANA Grasslands Dog “appears to contain Salmonella”. The FDA refused the product for import and issued an Import Alert. This has resulted in border crossing delays and subsequent shortages of ACANA Grasslands Dog.

Although previous lab results showed negative Salmonella results, the FDA required additional sampling. Champion complied with all FDA requirements, sending additional samples of ACANA Grasslands Dog to a third party FDA certified lab. Without exception the test results from each sample tested negative for Salmonella.

While these samples tested negative for Salmonella, the FDA maintains an Import Alert until they finalize their documentation process. We expect normal shipments to resume upon the lifting of the FDA Import Alert.

When it comes to food safety, we follow the same protocols as any food processor making human foods. Our Quality Assurance protocols require all products must have a negative Salmonella lab result from a Government of Canada accredited laboratory before shipping-there is no exception to this policy.

The health of your cherished pets and your peace of mind mean the world to us, we go the extra mile when ensuring the safety of ACANA and ORIJEN. We appreciate your patience during this process, and if you require further information on ACANA feeding options please contact us."

That’s good to know. I have always thought of Orijen and Acana as premium foods and was as surprised as anyone to read of the import refusal due to salmonella. Hopefully the issue will be resolved for Acana.

I’ve just never tried either of these foods, although I’ve thought about it (price was the factor, not the foods themselves).

To my knowledge, Dynamite has never had a recall on any of their products.

Can you please refer to me where you saw Natural Balance on a current recall list? I’m not aware of it being recalled, but would definitely like to know if you are right! I just re-checked lists online and have not found it… please let me know!

Wellness was on the Diamond recall list; however, they never had any bags test bad, they just recalled for a precaution. I received this email from them today:

Thank you for taking the time to write about Wellness products.

Here you go (this is just one of the lists that have been released):

Well, I ordered some Fromm, just a small bag to try for now. I looked at the Acana and Orijen, but the combinations were odd and many had lamb in them. Lamb is a no go for the JRT.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks! Don’t know how I missed that one. Luckily not my specific type of Natural Balance (yet), I have to use the Limited Ingriedient line… SO frustrating!!
