Can you track TB ownership--how? Updated--Got him!

I am looking at a race record and just messaged the person who has listed this horse. She has limited information. He is for sale to a non-racing home. I guess I thought I would see change of ownership on his papers but nothing is listed. I wanted to find out why he had a gap in racing but his current owner didn’t own him then. Is there a way to look up a former owner?

Maybe also ask this in the Racing forum…

Thanks. Why didn’t I think of that? Tired I guess.

You can look up his race record on Equibase by his name, and on the results tab you can view the chart for each race. It will show who owned and trained him at the time of that particular race.

Owners should be recorded on his papers. When the horse races, the papers must be on file at the racing secretary’s office along with the Coggins. The racing secretary will check the papers to make sure the ownership is correct and will record the change in ownership if the horse gets claimed.

I can’t figure out what you mean by “results tab.” I purchased a report from Equineline which is, I think the same thing you get from Equibase. I did look at a sample PP from Equibase but I don’t see a “results tab” there either. Please clarify. Thanks.

See the “Results” button? Click that.

From there you can open the PDF chart of each race, and see who owned and trained the horse at that time.

This is available for all horses, just lookup yours.

Oh, thank you!

Sooo, now that I know who the owner and trainer are at the time of the gap his race record, how do I find contact info on them?

Is the trainer currently running anywhere? (Lookup the trainer in equibase to find out.) If they are, call the stable gate at the track and leave a message requesting a call back. Be prepared that they may not really remember the horse at all.

If not running, then it’s to Google to find contact info. Facebook can also be a resource, particularly if the trainer is younger.

How big was the gap? How many races did he run after the gap and how did he run? I would not read as much into the gap as I would read into what happened after the gap. My race horses always get breaks and it’s not always due to an injury. Any horse that gets 60-90 days off is going to need another 4-6ish weeks to get racing fit again. I’ve also retired a bunch of horses and it’s not always because they are not sound - we usually pull the trigger while they are still plenty sound for a second career. But a big THANK YOU for considering an ex-race horse!!

12/20/15 was his 14th race, raced again on 7/4/16, then not again until 1/22/17, then had 17 races after that, later changing trainers twice and owners once. Last race was 7/2/18. Owner was also the trainer for several early races but had the same owner and trainer through the time he had the gaps in racing. Looks clean legged in photos and trots soundly on pavement. Have not seen him in person. Trying to figure out if it is worth the several hour drive.

Not sure if I should call the owner or trainer during the time of the gap(s) See post #12.

If you want to get any information about the horse, call the trainer.

The schedule you describe would raise zero red flags for me. It sounds like you’re looking for reasons to not buy or look at the horse.

So a 7 month break after several races followed by a 6 month break after one race is not concerning?

I do really like the horse but since I have a barn full of old and broken horses, I don’t want another one. I am trying to be careful. I don’t mind reschooling another one as long as it is sound! I plan to at least have a quick PPE. He is priced at 2k.

I don’t find it concerning at all. Most breaks are due to something other than the horse–like the meet ending, or personal issues with the trainer/owner. The horse raced a whopping 17 times after that time off.

I’d PPE the horse. I’d not worry about the breaks at all.

The only thing that would change my mind is if the horse didn’t finish and was vanned off or walked off on either race before those two gaps. That might be worth further investigation, but still wouldn’t be a deal killer.

If he ran 17 times since January 2017, no concerns at all. BUT you should vet him. Where did he run the past 2 years? Is he a MD/PA/WV horse? Do you want to tell us his name, or if not, that’s fine.

Tampa, Gulfstream Park and Thistledown.

Anyone know how to get a hold of a Dr. Wales at Thistledown for a PPE? The person who listed this horse has not gotten back to me with his contact info.

If it gets sketch feeling, there are plenty more ottbs to go look at. I’m sure you are familiar with Canter Mid Atlantic, and the Thoroughbred Alliance Ahhh something (they have verified rescues listed) and RRP. Good luck!
