Canadian Olympic Team - who do you pick?

Eventing connect just posted this on FB:

TEAM CANADA CHANGE: First, thank you to all of our readers who trust us with information. We have received three reliable tips south of the border that Team Canada will change again due to a horse lameness. Should we publish what we know ahead of official confirmation that may take a day or so as they have to follow process? Readers weigh in.

What would it take to have a coach picked by the people who will actually be riding with him/her?

I was reviewing some of our provincial HT meeting minutes and ominously the president was reporting a lack of transparency and difficulty figuring things out in the new EC organization (not a surprise). [/QUOTE]

EC’s organizational structure doesn’t require it to be transparent.

This might be something to take up with an organization like AthletesCAN (a friend is current president; he is a lawyer like yourself, maybe he could help you).

Eventing could split off from EC, in the mode of British Eventing. This might be the best longterm solution, especially as the problems with EC are so profound and demonstrated by the hijinks and conflicts of interest involving Rio selection.

Sooooo curious!

It sounds like it’s Selena ??

No matter the outcome, it is going to be a very tough day for someone.

They are predicting Selena out and Kathryn in. How sad :frowning:

I do not actually fully understand the UK structure - but it seems BE is an affiliate of British Equestrian Federation… which isn’t THAT different than Canadian Eventing being part of EC. Kind of goes back to “how it was” when Canadian Eventing was a separate legal entity.

Oh no! I don’t any of the team personally but Selena’s so hard working and rides so well. The team will be weaker without her.

There should have been a reality show for this entire process! (but that may be too transparent for EC)… Think of the ratings it would get, no script needed!

Joking aside, I can’t imagine the emotional roller-coaster all these poor riders, families, (horses) and owners have gone through.

I feel awful for Selena - she was the only one I was 100% certain would be chosen for the team a month ago.
So JP would now have been named to the team even with out her successful appeal, as first reserve.
Is Waylon now the travelling (or non travelling?) reserve?

Absolutely a roller coaster ride - so heartbreaking for Selena and the Rumbles! And for Kathryn how exciting for her and her family. Eventing is such a tough sport, especially if one doesn’t have multiple horses to ride. :frowning:

There’s a story on EN now too and this comment below it (!!!)

“Louise Fish · Ontario, California
This is a travesty and hurts Canada’s chances for a medal. Foxwood High is completely sound. He has passed every medical test with flying colours. Selena O’Hanlon has significantly more points that Kathryn Robinson. Clayton Fredericks has already been found biased in his attempt to remove Jessica Phoenix and replace her with Kathryn.”

Word on the street is her horse IS fit and sound and there is some EC drama behind the scenes… :frowning:

so those of you in the know or with “word on the street” / “inside” information … is it being suggested that Clayton wants KR on the team and since JP won her appeal, he has found some way to bump Selena instead?
If true, this is stupid crazy.

Clayton is just one of 5 selectors, is he not? He shouldn’t be able to run roughshod over the other 4 (assuming they are unbiased(?))
Or is the entire EC and selection committee determined to do what they want, rules be damned?

If Selena’s horse is fit for competition, what kind of hold does KR have on EC that they would blatantly thumb their noses at the court ruling by an underhanded last minute swap. Is it possible that they were stupid enough to promise her a slot if she didn’t kick up too much of a fuss after the paperwork snafu last time? That would be incredibly dumb on their part.

I hope we get the real story behind all this. It’s just all so very suspicious.

I feel awful for Selena and her team.

Or did one person in particular promise the spot and is pulling a “Put her on the team or find another coach for Rio” play? (ENTIRELY baseless speculation, of course)

I mean, according to the minutes of the arbitration committee, it wouldn’t be out of character…

If I recall correctly, it was KR’s paper work error was it not? failing to submit whatever was needed to declare herself for WEG
(or I could be completely mistaken)

“or find another coach for Rio” … i’d consider that a promise, not a threat. I imagine much of the team might be happy to have someone else jump in last minute.

Everyone but those that picked him over Leslie Law or Todd … and isn’t that really who can pull the strings in the background?
