Kyle said exactly what I was thinking, WFP made the GB team with his not so stellar year, but he is a veteran and won’t buckle under pressure.
IMO I see Jess as the same sort of season and caliber of rider.

Aussie (not sure if that’s the spelling of his name, as there is no information on this) is a Selector as well as Fleur and Clayton. Not entirely sure who else.
Aussie has absolutely no horse knowledge who is also the High Performance Advisor.
ETA: Jen Holling is also a selector[/QUOTE]
The other interesting bit of hearsay in the (Buck and Kyle) video is that supposedly Jessica Phoenix and Clayton Fredericks disagreed seriously about something at Bromont 2016. You know who I think should be a selector? Kyle. He seems so reasonable.

I think it has turned into semi- common knowledge. Clayton did not like that she withdrew Rotti and Bentley’s Best before xc - even though they had run 3 weeks previously. He reemed her out just before she went out on xc.
I agree, Kyle’s comments were articulate, well-organized and very direct. Sadly, I think that could make it more unlikely that he be part of the decision-making.
Last year,he posted a video when he was left off the PanAm team. His directness is not his friend in the political forum.
I will not be sad to see CF go.

He can’t even spell positive…
The appeal by JP was to be “Wednesday” … as in today or next Wednesday or ???
I would love to be a fly on the wall there.

JP and WFP are in no way the same caliber, and no this is not a hate on on JP. They just aren’t. We are talking countless wins at the Olympic and 4* levels vs someone with international experience. The international experience can be a great asset but the other team members all have that too. I think it’s smart to leave someone off because of having so many Es RFs and Rs in the last two years. If their reasoning is anything else (like petty highschool drama) then I don’t agree with that at all.
My take was that Kyle was implying that Jessica Phoenix and WFP are of the same mental caliber – able to stay on their game or even improve when the pressure is on.

while one can expect the number of falls to be proportional to the number of 3* and 4* rides, I too am concerned about the number of rider falls and horse falls she has had recently. I would love to see Jess take 6 months of down time and come back as our strong leader again.
Keep in mind, her results became more sparse when Clayton came into the picture. I think that says a lot. He’s ruined her.
Yes as in they have the same mindset on the big world stage. She knows to go and get shit done, nerves are not a factor, and you can’t deny that one Jealoushe. She performs when she is needed to.
The fact that Clayton caused a shit storm at Bromont RIGHT before her ride on Abbey is concerning. He likes to mess with minds, look what Sharon also witnessed, him causing a stir about Selena’s bit moments before going in the ring.
I’ll be interested to see the official list. Also really interested about this Appeal.
What happens, would you still want to ride on the team? Who gets kicked off? Such a shitty matter all around for everyone.
On the topic of Clayton, it’s worth noting that a similar concern was raised with his coaching of Kathryn at Pan Ams last year, and her ultimate result. Not the type of progression I’d like to see a coach cultivating, to say the least.

I, too, disagree with this statement. While it is very valid to say that she’s incredibly mentally tough (I don’t think a thing on this Earth scares her), to compare her to WFP is more than a stretch. WFP is an Olympic medalist, four star winner, and former world number 1. More importantly, we cannot forget that the rider is only half the package - WFP is named to the team on a long-time partner and recent Badminton winner. Jessie does not have anything close to that in her barn right now, let alone available for selection.
It is also worth noting that the “not so stellar year” WFP has been having is as a result of an extended recovery from an injury last year. He has proven himself to be sufficiently recovered from that, on the basis of multiple FEI wins since the accident, and at the three star level the horse has produced a sub-40 dressage score, an xc run with minimal time, and has not taken a show jump rail since WFP’s accident.
The “not so stellar year” Jessie has been having is as a result of infrequent completions at FEI competitions, whether from a preference to withdraw or from falls of horse or rider on course. In the last year alone, her FEI record is 44% (18/41) letters, 56% numbers (23/41). This is a concerning trend for a potential team rider, no matter the mental fortitude.

And Kyle drew the same parallel between WFP and Jess, and it is appropriate to make that comparison, ,relative to their respective teams.
The fact that it seems that CF and Jess, and an owner, had a disagreement (he reamed her out??? right before XC??
What kind of coach does that kind of BS? ) and CF as a selector just looks bad.
And it was a conflict of interest IMO
And what can the other riders say? All of them want to be on the team, so even if they disagree strongly with what was done, they won’t be able to speak out.
The whole thing, the politics, the lack of transparency, stinks.
what a complete and total s#$tshow. I can’t believe JP isn’t on the team and although I wish she would be more communicative with her fan base (for eg. around the frequent WDs), I absolutely love her. And she has more experience getting a variety of horses around at the upper levels than most of the others. I wonder if her wild competition schedule (withdrawing horses almost regularly before XC, seemingly pushing others fast) is due to the fact that there is so much uncertainty around team selection. Either way, CF has got to go. He’s just a complete jerk. You don’t ream someone out right before xc.
bringille, you made me think of something.
Maybe people don’t realize but Jess is usually showing twice the amount of horses as other top riders (of Canadian riders). This obviously increases her chances of fall/mistake percentage. Since she rides more than our other top riders, we are more aware of her mishaps because of it.
This makes her under the microscope a lot more than our other riders, with the others mostly having just one UL horse… and bringing others up still. When Jess clearly has multiple UL horses and also bringing up multiple LL horses. Keep in mind, most of these horses have owners, Jess doesn’t make all the calls on these horses, the owners do too. But you don’t see that from a spectators stand point.
Maybe her WD’s are because of the owners? Who knows.

This isn’t necessarily true though if you look at FEI results for all riders. Especially in the Uk, many are riding multiple horses and not having that many Es and RFs. I agree with whoever said she should take some time off and maybe develop some horses. I too wish she was a bit more transparent - like what happened to Exponential? He was eventing 4* then disappeared. I mean it is none of our business but the fans do care. For the record I do think JP is a great rider and role model, but I don’t think she is the one to help our team finish at Rio. She just has way too many incompletes the last few years. I don’t think she has a horse on her team that is there yet.
And this whole thing about the coach and rider fighting is ridiculous. Does the coach not put the riders on a training plan? Do they not agree to a schedule months in advance? There is so much disconnect. I don’t even know why these top riders bother wanting to ride for the country at this rate.
The problem is, many don’t realize JP is not the only one not liking CF as team coach, the others are just scared to stand up, for obvious reasons.
I agree, it would be nice to know more about day to day things with JP. She’s a very ‘professional’ mind set, where she wants the public to not know so much as it can become a little too personal at times. I’ve talked to her a few times about it, but of course its her world and her decision to make what she wants public about herself.
Tucker, he’s off retired, I was just saying to a friend I wish he received a nice retirement like many other UL eventers have, but he did not. He’s residing at her moms place, all fat and happy. Although I’m sure he’d like to be in work still, but he’s 18 or 19 now and owes her nothing, or us nothing.
Will be interesting to see the Official list. I would love to be a fly on the wall for the Appeal yesterday, and very curious with what went down.
Blue and Benny are off to Great Meadows, so this should be interesting to follow as well.
Down time, I do agree, its healthy for down time. Luckily its an off year next year, so I’m hoping she takes some me/family time.
The riders are placed in such a terrible spot not having a voice, aren’t there team rider reps anymore?

I believe there were a few, but when the whole thing went down in October, with Clayton becoming a selector, a lot of the riders stepped down. I believe Waylon raised a big stink about it when it happened as well. Hawley I think was a rider rep, Jess was too. Its sad, they all are muted.
