For some reason, it’s illegal for a cop to park in or immediately adjacent to a bar parking lot. It’s considered entrapment, which makes no sense to me. And I’m one who, although I completely DO NOT condone drunk driving, I do understand how it happens. I’m just adding that to underscore that I think cops should be able to park in or next to bar parking lots. Oh yeah, I used to own a restaurant, too. It wasn’t a belly-up-to-the-bar place, but we did have a bar. I would have been fine with a cop right outside. I shut off some folks - they almost always told me they’d ruin me. Hmm. They never did.

COTH just posted a new article with updates. It is sad that it took a tragic accident to draw attention to drinking and driving again (the article confirms a blood alcohol level above the legal limit), but it is good to see that it has led people to take action so that hopefully other accidents can be avoided.

I’m glad that the accident has served as a wake up call. It is a terrible shame that it took something this horrific to make people pay attention. 0.126 percent blood alcohol level is very drunk, not just slightly above the legal limit.
It would have been so much better if they’d all stayed put. No need for a taxi or Uber. When you are at someone’s house, a guest room, sofa, or even the floor is a better option.
I believe there could be a long wait for a cab or Uber in that area at that hour. Someone with possibly impaired judgment might decide not to wait.
If this provides an option that keeps more people safe, then props to those involved.
Thank you for posting this.
I was one of the people who was like, “OK, but if the ueber richest among the ueber rich aren’t taking taxis/limos, it’s not because of lack of a free service.”
If the free service is more immediately available time wise at that hour, perhaps that will help.
That said from personal experience I once went to The Breakers for a drinks-heavy lunch with a friend, we knew we planned to be drinking, so we got a ride there and then asked the front desk to call us a taxi home to West Palm*.
I mean, not the cheapest lunch I’ve ever had, but affordable even without a 9 figure family fortune.
*(granted this was midday, being lunch, not 1am so I take your point, MHM)

They can in most states (at least in CA and OR) so long as they are parked on a public road or highway.
Was her BAC ever reported?

Why should it? she was not driving…
So Palm Beach Post wrote that to have his blood alcohol level for 160 pounds he was at his death he had to drink 6 beers or drinks in one hour! At that level you cannot hold the car on the road. That is crazy! So sad he had no regard for his life or others. I will not judge him because he paid the ultimate price for his mistake. But I hope other people learn from this. The whole thing is so sad!!!

From the sounds of it, he did when he was sober. But all that went out the window once he became that drunk. Like you said, just very sad. As it is any time I read about something like this happening. (My high school friend’s dad was killed by a drunk driver while he was commuting to work on a bicycle…)
I couldn’t help but think of this thread when I saw this commercial last night:

I wish more people would #giveadamn. Less people would die.
This article provides more details about the new car service. As I said the other day, for many people, it’s more a matter of convenience than cost. They may not be willing to sit around and wait for a cab or Uber.
It would be better if everyone on the planet would make good choices right from the start of the evening, but until that happens, this service could be a godsend. Major kudos to those who are trying to help solve this longstanding problem.

In my opinion, making the decision to use this service rather than drive while under the influence is a good choice no matter what time of day or night that choice is made.

Absolutely. Far better than the alternative.
PhelpsSports did an interview with Hardin Towell and Andres and Sophie were brought up. He was saying how responsible Andres and Sophie were and how he never thought he’d do what he did. Obviously he wasn’t being so responsible the night he killed Sophie and himself. If he was responsible he would not have driven Sophie home, he would’ve called a cab or Brian to pick her up.
I am still not sure why the focus is all on BAC. Like it or not, depending on his “normal” drinking patterns, we’ll assume her he drank more than once a week…again, an assumption…0.126 alone, while an accident waiting to happen on a highway at speed, perhaps should not result in such a tradegy on a “city” street (single vehicle accident).
I feel “hotrodding” “aggressive driving” has to be have in play. As I posted before, those cars will respond to aggressive driving with torque and power. It sound, from the press, that he may have been an aggressive driver, and that alone could be a problem. I am a more aggressive driver with 0 BAC than I am with a drink, but the drink slows reactions and impairs judgement of course.
A “drunk” driver going the speed limit, slowing for the curve and the stop sign, may have still gong up over the curb and hit the post, BUT I feel there would have a been a better chance that we’d be following their recovery. Sure, things happen, and if they weren’t in seat belts, the passenger could still have had fatal injuries, Andre could have hit his head at 20mph and died, etc…but, at some point, plain, unbreakable rules of physics do come into play.
Still sad for them and families that moments of misjudgment carried such a price.

“Obviously,” which is likely why Hardin was surprised by what occurred-- his previous dealings with the man had shown him only to be a responsible individual. I’m not sure whom you think would quibble on this point-- likely not Hardin Towell.
Who’s Hardin Towell ?

It looks like they bought Andreas lovely horse Ariantha. Must be very sentimental for Hardin.
