Cat Bitten by Rattlesnake

https://www.carecredit.com/ Care Credit is like a credit card for health issues- human or pet. Typically there is a no interest 6 month pay off option or longer ones with interest.

It has been very helpful to me with my pets. HOWEVER, not all vets take it. I’m sure CSU would take it but not all local vets do.

dani0303 ?

should we ‘talk’ ?

Rattler venom can damage nerves.
Grandpa was bitten on his hand almost 100 years ago, no antivenin then.
He reached absentminded for a burlap sack someone tossed by the chicken house door and there was a rattler under there.
He always said he knew better, should have moved it with a stick first.
He made it to town, where someone drove him to the hospital.
They treated him best they could those days.
He lost the use of that arm for two years, until most nerves regenerated enough to give him back some use of it.

I wonder if that is part of why your cat is wobbly, the nerve damage in some places from the venom itself and if so, it will take time, but he should regain good function.

The news reported this week that a two year old girl was bitten in her yard in town, was flown to the regional hospital, where they gave her 10 vials of antivenin and she is coming around well now.

Snakes are very thick and active this year, everyone is complaining about it and warning to be careful.

Sounds like your cat is doing ok now, that is great news.

The specialists at CSU that my vet talked to said that cats do tend to have neurological reactions to venom. They just don’t see it often because most cats don’t survive the first 12 hours.

They’re encouraged that it’s temporary and should regain full function within 7-10 days. He’s improving pretty drastically every day.

Jingles for Rocket and dani0303 - take care.

Yes, generalized neurological reactions.

I was mentioning localized ones, where the venom may have affected tissues directly.

Our horse that was bitten about a month ago did ok, according to our vet, because we were on top of it right after it happened, the antivenin helped avoid tissue destruction to the extent we may have had without it.

Lucky that we have that to treat with today, makes the outcome so much better.

Glad that Rocket is doing so well, almost back to normal now.

He got bit right on the top of his head. He doesn’t seem have any facial paralysis or localized neuro symptoms but he does have some necrotic tissue around the fang mark. Of course he can’t tell us about less obvious nerve damage.

  • dani0303 ~ received the info from the messenger ~ thanks, we’re on it :D[/B]

The morning update is nothing but good news here!

He jumped up on the bed do sleep with us last night. Jumping was something that he hadn’t been able to do at all so it’s a huge step. He’s also showing some interest in playing with the other cats today as well! He’s still in some mild pain and sleeping more than usual but I’d say he’s about 75% of normal now! :D:D
