Cat with deep gaping wound after dog attack- UPDATE w pictures

I haven’t posted about this, because I don’t want it to be about the dog, and the endless breed debate. But I am worrying and could use some jingles/advice.

Friend had two dogs. Bitch, not spayed, has shown some human aggression off and on, fights with male dog occasionally (not neutered). Bitch totally sweet to her family, and friends. Has a history of having previously killed a kitten. A little orange kitty showed up, and they started feeding him. Eventually let him in. Dogs seemed to get along with him for the most part.

Bitch snuck out a couple times in the last few months and killed a chicken and 4 ducks. Also bit my dad, who was wearing gloves (no harm).

I was on her porch about 2 months ago and heard “fight barking”. I ran in, and bitch has cat cornered under bed. Male dog had a hold of her, and was holding her back from the cat. I broke it up. I told owner then, bitch intended to kill that cat, and if they remained in the same house, she WILL kill him. They thought they could work it out.

Two weeks ago this Saturday I was over and we were leaving. Friend ran back in for her phone charger- found cat under table in dog’s jaws. Blood smeared on the walls, pee, poo all over. She broke it up and screamed for me.

Kitty was in shock, and covered in blood. I assessed him, warmed him up, and we rushed him to er vet. He had broken a canine tooth, and had two punctures to his lower abdomen. One penetrated the abdominal wall. ER vet stabilized him and we took him home with pain meds and antibiotics. They wanted to do exploratory surgery, but we couldn’t afford that. I paid the er bill on my care credit. 414.00. I couldn’t let him die.

I took him home to my house, and nursed him around the clock.Fever hit 106.7. I didn’t sleep for two days, but he made it to the regular vet Monday am. Hospitalized there for two days on fluids, pain meds, antibiotics.

Came home, deeper wound has begun to heal. At recheck, less deep wound shows significant necrosis- vet cut away skin and fat that were dead. Abdominal wall healthy so far. Has lost weight.

Yesterday I found an abscess on the hip that had been missed, and drained it. It looks good. We go back for another recheck tomorrow am.

Kitty has a 2"x3" hole in his belly that is probably 1" deep and disgusting. No smell. No fever. Eating, drinking, using litter box. Walking around.

He is on amoxi, we are force feeding him watered down a/d, and he is eating hard food on his own. We were flushing the wound with saline every 3 hours or so, and taking his temp. Ran out of saline so I bought vetrycin and am now using that to flush. Vet says hopeful, but no guarantees still.

Today we put the dog to sleep. It was hard and awful and so very very sad. But it was right. She would leap into my arms to be cuddled- but she would bite at the male dog while I was petting him, with no care for my hands. Friend has little kids.

I lost my kitty a month ago, I feel like the universe owes me one. Is there anything we can do to encourage that hole to close faster? Anything I haven’t tried? I’m going to ask the vet about letting me do sub-q fluids at home ( I know how).

No advise, but thank you for helping and sorry it got to this point. :frowning:

Jingles on the way.

Poor kitty, stupid, stupid owner, and thank you for stepping in and saving the poor cat!

No advice, just lots of jingles for a quick recovery!

Good luck.

You can buy sterile saline in convenient bottles that’s meant for contact lens wearers (make sure it’s just saline, not cleaning solution) at pretty much any grocery store or pharmacy. Or, get some distilled water and some salt and a syringe and mix it yourself.

Sending healing vibes for the little kitty.

Your story brings back unpleasant memories of a dog I had in childhood–she was devoted to me and was a great family pet. However, she was excessively protective of the family and our property–she went after people who came to the door and tried to bite their ankles. Once she broke the skin on someone. My parents warned me that we could be sued, but I begged them over and over to give her another chance.

Things got worse when my sister was given some ducklings to raise. My dog dug under the fence and killed them. We reinforced the pen and tried again, keeping the dog tied or enclosed in the house. Of course she eventually got out and killed the second set of ducks. That was it–we had the dog PTS. I am sure she would have killed a pet cat had she had the opportunity. It was hard, hard thing.

The wound will close in its own time, it just seems to take forever. His system is slow because he’s still really stressed, especially if he isn’t eating. Can you give him something like Nutrical to make sure she’s getting the nutrition she needs? Healing is hard work.

Also, you can get saline through various online sources if that’s better/cheaper:

Poor kitty, I hope he makes it. Hard to see an otherwise healthy dog PTS, but it was indeed the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, the wound will just have to heal with time.

Why do you want the SQ fluids? Do you think kitty is dehydrated? If so, then bring home those SQ fluids. Have you tried Convenia? We use it quite often with cats as a antibiotic for abcess’s. It’s $87ish per shot, but it works really well. Also, it sounds silly but a little neosporin on those wounds will help. It sounds like the best you can do is keep flushing and helping the wounds along, but you want to remember that wounds need to scab over and heal, so be careful about flushing too much. Is it deep enough that your vet will maybe put a few staples in?

What a terrible story, but it is great that you have saved this kitty. Best of luck to you and the kitty.

Poor wee cat - you did a really good thing by weighing in.

About fluids…might it just be simpler to feed the cat wet/canned food, than trying to get liquid into it while feeding it dry food? There’s a lot of liquid in canned food, and it is nutritionally balanced and easily digested, and you can sometimes even get away with watering it down a bit more. My cat prefers Purina Fancy Feast - pretty much any flavour.

Jingles for the kitty.

One of my barn cats had a similar hole. Scary looking thing. It took time but it closed on its own.

As others have said, don’t flush it too much. It will take time but will heal. I would spray it down with Vetricyn once a day and monitor it closely for infection. I’m sure the cat will be licking it as well.

You are a wonderful person for taking on the responsibility for this cat and doing the right thing regarding the dog.

I am sad for the cat and the dog. The dog ended up dead because it was managed horribly by a clueless human - that being said I don’t ever give human aggression a free pass, but hard to say if the dog would have been human aggressive in a knowledgeable home and spayed. I hope your friend can be clued in and either rehome the male or atleast neuter him. Sounds like someone who should never own a dog.

Jingling for the poor kitty, thanks for giving it a chance at life. The wound should close over time. I wouldn’t over clean it unless it looks abscessed again.

What has vet suggested for this wound? is there sufficient skin to put in a drain & close?

As others mention, don’t over clean, if vet wants it left to heal as is, then it’s about keeping dirt out & not too much attention from kitty … maybe try a loose cotton “wrap” … you’ll likely need to compromise re kitty tolerance levels.

Kitty is so lucky you were there

Update:
We have been feeding canned food as well as dry, but had been struggling to keep kitty hydrated, as the wound is seeping quite a bit. Today at recheck however, he was hydrated well enough to not need more fluids! Yay!

Doc pulled out a bit more dead tissue, but overall is please with the wound. He had asked us to flush it, because there are still bits of dying and dead tissue that need to come out.

I took photos today when I picked them up. It is pretty gross:

His human is one of my best friends. She tries really hard, she just didn’t know any better. The female was from a BYB, and her mother and full sibling were both PTS for aggression issues as well. We are working on getting the male fixed, and she is enrolling him in obedience classes at the dog club I belong to. I have worked with him, and he is goofy and hyper but very smart and not at all aggressive. He is kind to kittens, chickens, etc. I actually think if he had not intervened the cat would be dead. His face was torn up, but is healing nicely.

The female was one that might have been managed in a pro home, but never would have been successful as a typical pet I think. They had her from 5 months old and loved her very much-she was quite trained, and knew sit, lay down, heel etc. She spit the cat out when told to. The bite to my dad actually worried me more. I saw it, she walked up to him, cold, focused and SILENT and grabbed his hand. Not the typical upset dog at all. Because she was good for her family, I know how easy it is to find reasons to hold on, and I am proud of them for being strong enough to do what had to be done yesterday.

Oh kitty. This is all so sad. Jingles for kitty and hugs to you!

Awww. What a sweet looking kitty. The wound is ugly, but the margins look healthy! It’ll take awhile, but I bet it will heal up great. I’d not use anything but saline on it…were you able to get more at the vet?

Thank you for taking care of this fellow!

This is him from day 2 hanging out on my bed.

Wound the first night- it’s interesting how little of the damage can be seen.

Taz (kitty) is so very good. He let the vet debride that wound with no sedation- just laid on his back and watched us. He is an extremely lucky kitty- if she didn’t forget the charger, he’d have been dead when we got home. If the tooth had nicked bowel, if I hadn’t been there to deal with shock, if if if.

Lucky little kitty. Thanks to you for being there for him.

Are you keeping him? Sorry if I missed that info.

No, he is staying with her and she will pay me back. Also I’m sorry I haven’t got back with you about other necklace. I am still experimenting with it, but life has been a bit bumpy lately.
