Cesar Milan - opinions of the Dog Whisperer
Did anyone see CM on CBS Sunday morning. Leslie Stahl interviewed him. He did go on a little bit about reading energy, etc. But I think the core of his message is that he tries to train the owners, and that a lot of dog problems are because of the owners and that a lot of dog problems can be related to lack of exercise. Anyway, it was basically a lot of the stuff that we talk about here on the board…
I agree he has lots of good ideas (treats dogs like dogs, not kids. Plenty of exercise. Train the owner) But so much of his ‘training’ is incorrect, outdated, dangerous (to dogs and people), and, doesn’t really teach the dog anything, just causes them to suppress behaviors and/or shut down.

He relies on a lot of old-fashioned outmoded theories that were popular when I first started training dogs forty years ago.

Since then, most of us have learned better ways to do things.

Alpha roll? Seriously? Can I get that with some wasabi and ginger?

He’s an eejit, OP. But eejits apparently make good TV. How else can one explain Jersey Shore?:lol:

CM has some good points and what he does seems to work for HIM, but it really doesn’t transfer to others. That is where I have a problem with him being so widely watched.
No, it doesn’t transfer to EVERYONE. Not everyone naturally has an assertive personality. Those who don’t and try to pretend that they do, i.e. emulate CM, fail miserably.

But I do and its translated great for me. It made perfect sense. Matter fact, after so many years, that aspect was the missing piece for me. And now I have the dog that I want. One that I have molded myself and unrecognizable from the dog I picked up at the pound 3 years ago, who was insecure, territorial and under socialized.

But I suppose I’m wasting my breath and we should just agree to disagree.

you may not think of this as a compliment, but you probably did not really need CM. You probably already had pretty good training skills.

But I suppose I’m wasting my breath and we should just agree to disagree.

now don’t go getting all reasonable on me.

Is it the fake, rubber riding boots? ;)
The S & M bondage outfit and that she is TERRIBLE at training dogs and teaching people. Lols. I have several friends who just love her show and try to use her methods on their dogs. Did I mention their “children” are TERRIBLY behaved. The one time she faced an ACTUALLY aggressive dog on her show that BIT people she suggested that the dog would never be safe and that the family should basicly get rid of it. She picks and choses easy dogs, she would not know what to do with a TRULY aggressive/dominate dog. Not to mention she spends the extire show squacking like a friggin banshee.
