Anybody use Charmeur last year? If so…do you have a foal on the way? Wondering about the quality of the semen.
We used 3 doses and did not get a pregnancy. I have heard of one pregnancy.
The main reason I didn’t attend the last KWPN-NA Annual Meeting was that it took place in Holland and in conjunction with the stallion approvals. There was no way I was going to “support” the very stallion owners that continue to send crappy semen to the US and then point the finger at our vets.
I have purchased Vivaldi, Bretton Woods and Charmeur frozen semen and it was all useless stuff. Add to that Krack C and Gribaldi semen that many unsuspecting mare owners in the US purchased, and that was just as crappy, and you get the impression that a lot of the Dutch stallion owners couldn’t care less about the market in the US.
This was a subject that was raised during this past annual meeting and the stallion representatives agreed that they would have to improve their way of doing business with the US mare owners. However, there was one notable exception and that was Mr. Joop van Uytert, owner of Krack C, Gribaldi (before he went to Schockemoehle for collection), and Vivaldi. Mr. van Uytert told the meeting attendees that “he was not interested in doing business with the US!!”"
I’ve said this before and will say it again - the only Dutch stallions stations I will do business with anymore areVDL Stud and Team Nijhof. Those folks are business people and value their US clients. They also know what they’re doing when it comes to freezing semen.
Just my opinion…
Siegi, do you know if the fact that Gribaldi is being collected at PS’s means that JY will have access to him?
Seigi,
I hear ya! Haven’t been in the business long enough to have vast amounts of experience (both good or bad) with semen, semen brokers, and stallion owners. But last years dealings with BW semen was not fun! Note to self…don’t plan embryo transfers with unproven (at least here in the US) semen. To be fair to the ex-owners of Bretton Woods, they did offer replacement semen of Charmeur or Wynton. BUT thoses two stallion’s semen cost much less than BW…so not exactly a equal trade. Also, How do I know Charmeur or Wynton were freezed properly if BW wasn’t. That’s what led me to wonder if there are any pregnancies by Charmeur. JY tells me 3 out of 5 mares bred got pregnant. Haven’t heard back from CA yet.
I know there are many facors that contribute to conception, but my gut was right on the BW semen. I was using a mare with a perfect score of 10/10 on getting pregnant on the first try with frozen AND the Repro specialist at Iowa State University.
I have only used frozen from 2 stallions. In 2010 I used the last dose of Kennedy to be found here in the US…in some dark corner of the tank from Cornell. Worked on the first try and gave as a First Premium, Site Champion and almost Top Five colt last year. Then the BW saga that ended with a last minute call to ISF and some UB40 semen. Mare was pregnant on first try and we are excited for our first UB40 baby! (Tried 3 times before but wierd stuff happened!) Just wished ISF had more stallions that matched my girls…they are so great to work with!
So, I am going to take my replacement Charmeur semen and put it in the talnk for next year, try BW one last time now that Paul Schockemoehle does his semen, and then follow your advise on only using VDL and Team Nijhof for frozen. How do you feel about Paul Schockemoehle for semen?
Mr. Van Uytert sounds like a real tool! I’ll make sure never to give him my business!
FWIW the Wynton semen we used appeared to be good and we got a foal.
I am also interested in breeding to Charmeur this year but I am a little reluctant to buy his semen without hearing some first hand reports. We also used Krack C and Vivaldi in the past without success and really don’t want to purchase any more frozen semen of unknown fertility.
We are also considering breeding to the KWPN stallion Voice (De Niro x Rohdiamont) but have very limited information regarding breeding success with his semen. Any experiences with Charmeur or Voice semen that fellow breeders are willing to share would be appreciated.

!!! THIS !!!
I bolded it. It’s the ONLY Dutch semen I will use either, or promote when other breeders talk to me about breeding to Dutch horses.
If a Dutch horse is standing at Celle or Schockemohle, then the chances are much improved for better quality semen because they will not send junk!
Check out the KWPN/NA Stallion Auction which ends March 7th. Team-Nijhof has donated a Johnson Breeding. Uphill, which is collected and frozen by VDL, is also there for us. Marijane Malouin has donated a breeding to Ferro, who is know to be Very fertile. Even Negro is there. He is the sire of Velegro, the super star for the British team. Superior Equine Sires JUST donated Don Tango a new young Contango out of the famous “endy” Jazz line!. I believe that you should be pleased with all of the Stallion Auction Stallions.
Mare in foal to Charmeur
I purchased two doses of Charmeur last year. I do have a mare in foal. The mare was bred within an hour of ovulation and is due to foal in 2-3 weeks. I was not happy with the quality of the semen on the first dose and because the timing could not have been more perfect I thawed the second dose and bred her with that was well. None the less, it goes to show it only takes one!
Very excited for you capitolequine … I would LOVE him over my Alabaster mare, but she is a maiden and with the stats about his semen quality so far, it is not a risk I’m willing to take
ETA: as he was mentioned above, is Negro’s frozen any good? I can’t say I’ve heard of any frozen foals by him, but that may just be because before Valegro he wasn’t very fashionable (here in Aus anyway)?
The Charmeur semen here in Australia is very good, there are many pregnancies to him this year
And any semen from PSI is always great, they really know how to freeze semen there

There will be no Charmeur baby next year, breeding/insemination was text book, so it makes you wonder.
Can’t wait to see pics of those foals that were produced with frozen.
I am not a semen agent, jjust a private breeder and last year i imported frozen semen directly from germany for my own use only
i did this with a goup of other breeders. i must say if i had to pay what you guys pay for semen, then i would not have done this, but we get so ripped off for frozen semen here in Australia
I am going to import Dutch semen next year but i was told by some of the semen agents that the quality is not good
HOwever, here in Australia there are many pregnancies and foals by Wynton and Charmeur and other dutch stallions too so i am sure some of it from Van uytert is ok
I would happily buy Charmeur or Wynton and many other dutch stallions as well

May 1st, report from Judy, 8 out of 8 pregnant, too bad I can’t be one of them:mad:
We bred to Charmeur last week. The semen was excellent…60-70% motile. We are breeding for an embryo transfer so I will find out later this week if we recover an embryo.
Good Luck, hope to hear good news:winkgrin:
We flushed a viable Charmeur embryo and the pregnancy is doing well in the recipient mare.
My rider has a mares due to foal this year from Charmeur and Bretton Woods. I don’t know the source of the semen, but she got it from a Dutch person who is both a rider and a trainer, so I’m thinking that the source for both is NL. The same person also had semen from Vivaldi and United a couple of years ago with no pregnancies from either. I was told by a semen broker not to buy Krack C here since no mares PG from him either. I do believe that PS knows how to freeze. Van Uytert owns half of Bordeaux, but PS does the freezing so I’m breeding to him this year
Any updated info on his semen success?
